    Abstract:

    Objectives: Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) is a major health concern in terms of its high prevalence, as well as restricted, and costly health care resources in India. The physicians of the Unani system of Medicine have been treating Hepatitis since centuries. The purpose of our study was to assess the effect of Unani Formulation in the treatment naive, CHB cases and to collect data to warrant further clinical trials. Methods: We conducted a case series with five patient of CHB, subsequently treated with the Unani formulation. Cases were confirmed with standard Hepatitis Antigen and viral measurements. The patients were treated for 6 months with measurement of the Hepatitis B surface Antigen (HbsAg). Results: Loss of surface Antigen occurred in the patients and became HbsAg negative within an average 13 weeks of treatment. Discussion: We reviewed the literature related to the Unani formulation used for the treatment in this study. Its constituents have exhibited antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties, suggesting possible mechanisms of action in the CHB. Conclusion: The preliminary findings indicate the potential therapeutic role of the Unani formulation in the treatment of CHB. Clinical trials based on this Unani pharmacopeal formulation should be conducted to explore the therapeutic potential of this formulation in CHB.     Abstract:

    Article history Unani system of Medicine is documented with several forms of Hepatitis along with their treatment through traditional drugs. The purpose of our study was to assess the effect of a formulation of Unani Medicine in the treatment of chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) cases and to collect data to warrant further clinical trials. We conducted a case series with five patient of CHB, subsequently treated with a Unani formulation as the main medicine. Cases were confirmed with standard Hepatitis Antigen and viral measurements. Patient were treated for 6 months with measurement of HBV DNA quantitative value. CVR (complete virological response) was observed within an average 14 weeks of treatment marked by undetectable HBV DNA in the blood. We reviewed the literature related to the Unani formalation used for the treatment in this cases. Its constituents have exhibited antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities, could be the possible mechanisms of action in this cases. The preliminary findings indicate the potential therapeutic role of this Unani formulation. Further studies should be conducted to explore the mechanism and action of this Unani formulation.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Resonant microcantilever arrays are developed for the purpose of label-free and real-time analyte monitoring and biomolecule detection. MEMS cantilevers made of electroplated nickel are functionalized with Hepatitis antibodies. Hepatitis A and C Antigens at different concentrations are introduced in undiluted bovine serum. All preparation and measurement steps are carried out in the liquid within a specifically designed flowcell without ever drying the cantilevers throughout the experiment. Both actuation and sensing are done remotely and therefore the MEMS cantilevers have no electrical connections, allowing for easily disposable sensor chips. Actuation is achieved using an electromagnet and the interferometric optical sensing is achieved using laser illumination and embedded diffraction gratings at the tip of each cantilever. Resonant frequency of the cantilevers in dynamic motion is monitored using a self-sustaining closed-loop control circuit and a frequency counter. Specificity is demonstrated by detecting both Hepatitis A and Hepatitis C Antigens and their negative controls. This is the first report of Hepatitis Antigen detection by resonant cantilevers exposed to undiluted serum. A dynamic range in excess of 1000 and with a minimum detectable concentration limit of 0.1 ng/ml (1.66 pM) is achieved for both Hepatitis A and C. This result is comparable to labeled detection methods such as ELISA.

  • The effects of lamivudine and recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine on chronic carriers of Hepatitis B

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of lamivudine and recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine on chronic Hepatitis B carriers. Studies has been shown that in animal models chronic Hepatitis B Vaccination can enhance immune response. Furthermore, treatment with lamivudine has resulting contributes to the maintenance of cellular immune responses than Hepatitis Antigen B. In this study, a group of eligible patients were divided into three groups. Lamivudine therapy and Vaccination were done in groups 1. In groups 2 lamivudine were used alone. In addition, The third group were used as control. The Fisher exact test was used for data analysis and differences among treatment in this study. The results showed that the only significant difference in the HBs Ag sreoconversion rates were observed between groups 1and control groups at the end of the fifteenth month. The present investigation suggested that the adjuvant therapy with Hepatitis B vaccine together with lamivudine in chronic carriers of Hepatitis B may lead to the eradication of viral infection in these patients
