The mayfly genus Paegniodes Eaton, 1881 is reported for the first time from Thailand. The larva of the new species can be distinguished from other known Paegniodes species by i) lamellae of gill I ca 1/4 of fibrilliform portion and ii) mandibles and basal segment of maxillary palp without dense setae on margin. The subimago characters useful to distinguish this new species from previously known species are i) the median stripes on abdominal terga and ii) shape of the female subgenital and subanal plates. The genetic distance between the new species and P. cupulatus (Eaton, 1871) was approximately 11%. The morphological characters of the new species are discussed and compared to other known species.

First checklist of mayflies (Insecta, Ephemeroptera) from Kosovo.

This investigation was conducted from March to November in 2017 and 2018; 32 sites were sampled covering the different freshwater ecosystems of the country. The first checklist of mayflies of Kosovo is provided. During this survey, we found 48 species belonging to 20 genera and nine families. The highest number of species belongs to the following two families, Heptageniidae (24) and Baetidae (9). This investigation is a contribution to the knowledge about taxonomy, biogeography, and ecology of mayflies of the Balkan Peninsula by giving new data on species composition and distribution range in Kosovo.

Among these techniques, micro-computed X-ray tomography (μ-CT) is gaining much attention. This method may allow access to hardly visible and internal structures of valuable specimens (e.g. type specimens) through virtual dissections. We studied two type specimens of Ephemeroptera belonging to the family Heptageniidae using μ-CT; the male lectotype of Epeorella borneonia Ulmer, 1939 (pinned specimen) and the male holotype of Rhithrogeniella ornata Ulmer, 1939 (specimen in ethanol). These specimens are the only male adults known in their respective genera; hence a detailed description of their genitalia could reveal important taxonomic and phylogenetic information. We present here the first-ever μ-CT study of mayfly type specimens, and confirm that male genitalia of R. ornata lack titillators, whereas those of E. borneonia possess a pair of titillators which were concealed within the penis lobes.

Molecular phylogeny and timing of diversification in Alpine Rhithrogena (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae).

Monaghan, Sereina Rutschmann, Michel SartoriAbstract:Larvae of the Holarctic mayfly genus Rhithrogena Eaton, 1881 (Ephemeroptera, Heptageniidae) are a diverse and abundant member of stream and river communities and are routinely used as bio-indicators of water quality. Rhithrogena is well diversified in the European Alps, with a number of locally endemic species, and several cryptic species have been recently detected. While several informal species groups are morphologically well defined, a lack of reliable characters for species identification considerably hampers their study. Their relationships, origin, timing of speciation and mechanisms promoting their diversification in the Alps are unknown. Here we present a species-level phylogeny of Rhithrogena in Europe using two mitochondrial and three nuclear gene regions. To improve sampling in a genus with many cryptic species, individuals were selected for analysis according to a recent DNA-based taxonomy rather than traditional nomenclature. A coalescent-based species tree and a reconstruction based on a supermatrix approach supported five of the species groups as monophyletic. A molecular clock, mapped on the most resolved phylogeny and calibrated using published mitochondrial evolution rates for insects, suggested an origin of Alpine Rhithrogena in the Oligocene/Miocene boundary. A diversification analysis that included simulation of missing species indicated a constant speciation rate over time, rather than any pronounced periods of rapid speciation. Ancestral state reconstructions provided evidence for downstream diversification in at least two species groups. Our species-level analyses of five gene regions provide clearer definitions of species groups within European Rhithrogena. A constant speciation rate over time suggests that the paleoclimatic fluctuations, including the Pleistocene glaciations, did not significantly influence the tempo of diversification of Alpine species. A downstream diversification trend in the hybrida and alpestris species groups supports a previously proposed headwater origin hypothesis for aquatic insects.

Here based on newly collected nymphal and associated imaginal materials of this species from eastern China, we find both nymphs and adults have several extraordinary characters. In adults, forewings have less crossveins in costal and subcostal sections, others crossveins arranged into five regular rows; tibiae and tarsi of midlegs and hindlegs subequal in length; male compound eyes widely separated and penes simple and fused. The nymphs have greatly extended lateral pronotum, round supracoxal spurs and extended dorsal lamellae of gills, especially those of the gills VII; maxillae have two independent distal dentisetae. These combined characters represent a new generic taxon. Therefore, Regulaneuria Zhou, gen. nov. is established here to include the species Regulaneuria cingulata (Navas, 1933) comb. nov. The forewing venation of the species R. cingulata is unique in the family Heptageniidae but similar to some counterparts of Leptophlebiidae and Baetidae.

Some of them are quite similar to each other in both imaginal and nymphal stages. However, these species have not been systematically compared and reviewed so far. In this study, six species are recognized. All nymphs of them share the following characters: gills V–VI with additional arrow-like accessory lobes, branched dentisetae, two rows of bristles and setae on hindtibiae and spotted abdominal terga. The males have divergent penes and clearly expressed titillators. The nymphs of the new species A. drepanophyllus sp. nov. have sickle-like gills I, spotted and striped body color, and males have unique genitalia. The nymphal stages of A. furcatus and A. hunanensis, which are associated and described for the first time, have similar body color to A. drepanophyllus sp. nov., but their pale dots on the head capsules and the shape of the hypopharynx are different. Keys to males and nymphs of the six species are provided.

first complete mitogenomes of three mayflies in the genus afronurus ephemeroptera Heptageniidae and their implications for phylogenetic reconstruction

In this study, the complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of Afronurus rubromaculata, A. yixingensis and A. obliquistrita were firstly sequenced and analyzed. Three mitogenomes share similar gene arrangement with an extra trnM gene compared with the ancestral order for insects. Comprehensive analysis of tRNA secondary structures showed that the extra trnM had a high level of nucleotide variation. The conservative intergenic spacer (IGS) region in the mitogenomes was found between the trnA and trnR genes with a size of 39 nucleotides and all formed a loop-stem structure. Furthermore, tandem repeats were identified in the control region of all three mitogenomes. The phylogenetic analyses using both Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) methods based on three datasets all supported that Heptageniidae was a monophyletic family. Our results supported the relationships ((A. rubromaculata + A. obliquistrita) + A. yixingensis) within Afronurus. The analysis will improve our understanding of the mitogenome features of heptageniid mayflies and lay the foundation for further phylogenetic study of Ephemeroptera.

In this study, the mitogenomes of Epeorus carinatus (15,338 bp) and E. dayongensis (15,609 bp) were sequenced, annotated and compared to genome data from congeners. Both mitogenomes had 23 tRNA genes including standard 22 and one extra tRNAMet. The duplicated tRNAMet gene had been found in other heptageniid species except Paegniodes cupulatus, suggesting it could be used as a molecular synapomorphy for partial Heptageniidae. The phylogenetic analyses based on Bayesian Inference (BI) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) showed that Heptageniidae was monophyletic and the relationships among known Epeorus species were ((E. carinatus + E. herklotsi) + (E. dayongensis + E. sp. 1)), which implied the focal species E. carinatus and E. dayongensis should be grouped into different subgenera.

Here two new species collected from China, which are named as Notacanthurus maculatus sp. n. and N. lamellosus sp. n. respectively, are described and pictured in detail. The nymph of N. maculatus sp. n. has following combined characters: posterior margin of sternum IX straight, claws with two subapical denticles, and gills V-VI with arrow-like accessory lobes. The male imago has unspecialized anterior margin of head and Electrogena-like penis lobes. The second species N. lamellosus sp. n. is more distinguishable. Its nymph has pale dots on head, median dorsal ridges on abdominal terga I-IX, claws with five subapical denticles, and dorsal lamellae of gills II-IV divided into two portions. Anterior margin of male imago is not protruding either, forewings have less pigmented crossveins between Sc and R1, and penis lobes have apical and ventral sclerites. A key to all known nymphs of the genus is provided.

Larvae are easily differentiated from those of the other known North American species by the presence of two rows of denticles on the tarsal claws. Males are differentiated from congeners by the presence of median spines on the apical sclerites of the penes and reddish-brown abdominal terga. The larva of N. rusticalis is described for the first time; it is differentiated from known North American Nixe by having more than 15 comb setae on the maxilla. A preliminary key for the larvae of the known North American Nixe is provided.

The species is based on larvae taken from western North Carolina. It is morphologically most similar to some M. mediopunctatum (McDunnough) larvae, but does not possess any of the distinguishing markings associated with the latter and also differs from it in habitat.

Larvae are differentiated from those of all other genera of Heptageniidae by the combination of the absence of lamellae on gills 1, sickle shaped lamellae on gills 2–6, a median ridge terminated with a sharp spine on abdominal terga 2–9, a slightly thickened anterior margin of the head capsule, two rows of long, fine setae on the mid and hindtibiae, and scattered simple setae on the ventral surface of galealaciniae. Darthus is included in the tribe Afronurini Webb & McCafferty n. trib. with Afronurus Lestage and Parafronurus Zhou & Braasch. Atopopini Wang & McCafferty is restricted to the genera Atopopus Eaton, Thalerosphyrus Eaton, and Asionurus Braasch & Soldan.

Larvae are differentiated from other North American Heptagenia Walsh by a pair of large, rectangular pale markings on abdominal tergum 4, and the combination of having the posterior margin of the abdominal terga with bluntly pointed spines less than half the length of the fine setae, small blunt spines on the posterior margin of the caudal filaments, and numerous rows of setae laterally on the ventral surface of the labrum. A 630 bp partial sequence of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase 1 (COI) from three specimens of H. whitingi n.sp. was compared with those of 12 specimens representing eight other North American species of Heptagenia. Intraspecific sequence divergences based on Kimura-2-parameter (K2P) distance ranged from 0–1.1%. Interspecific sequence divergence based on K2P distance ranged from 8.9–20.0%. Heptagenia whitingi n.sp. differed from its sister taxon H. flavescens (Walsh) by 11.7%. Heptagenia diabasia Burks and H. elegantula (Eaton) differed from each other by only 1.1%; these two alleged species show a clinal pattern in larval abdominal coloration and there are no structural differences between the semaphorants. On this basis, H. diabasia is placed as a junior subjective synonym of H. elegantula, n.syn.
