    Abstract:

    Representing the demons in La Tentation de saint Antoine, Flaubert transforms a Christian conception into a psychological one.  More precisely, he uses the concept of “Hypnagogic Hallucination” of Alfred Maury. But it is only when comparing the different versions of the text that one can observe this process of substitution.  In the 1849 version, the apparitions are always called “demons”.  This earlier, Christian concept seems to have its provenance in the Christliche Mystik by Joseph von Görres which Flaubert read in the French translation of Charles Sainte-Foi (La mystique divine, naturelle et diabolique, Paris, 1862). Görres makes the difference between a “true” Christian mysticism and a “false” demonical mysticism. What is called ecstasy on the one hand, is demonic possession on the other.  Demonology is explained by a heretic conception of evil which is based on a false substantialisation and illustrated most prominently by Manicheism.  As is well-known, Antoine is very attracted by the Gnosis, this – literally translated – religion of cognition.  With the adherers of Gnosis he shares the dualism of a material, terrestrial world and a divine, otherworldly prime principle.  Hence, the basic question is whether he finally overcomes this dualism by acquiring “gnosis” or whether the dualisms persist in the text.  The reading of the Tentation leads to a double result : From a macrostructural point of view, the allegoric resistance of the text indicates a non-overcoming of the dualism.  However, there is one moment of overcoming at the end of the text, a single moment of inversion of monism (être-dans-le-monde) and dualism (acosmisme)

    En représentant les démons dans la Tentation de saint Antoine, Flaubert transforme un concept chrétien par un concept psychologique élaboré par Alfred Maury, à savoir celui de l’Hallucination hypnagogique. Mais ce n’est qu’à travers les différentes variantes du texte qu’on peut observer ce processus de substitution. Dans la première version de 1849, les apparitions sont toujours appelées des « démons ». Quand on lit Die christliche Mystik de Joseph von Görres que Flaubert a connu par la traduction de Charles Sainte-Foi (La mystique divine, naturelle et diabolique, Paris, 1862) on peut faire une découverte intéressante : Görres opère une distinction entre une « vraie » mystique chrétienne et une « fausse » mystique démoniaque. Ce qui là s’appelle l’extase est ici la possession par les démons. Toute la démonologie est expliquée par une conception hérétique du Mal, laquelle repose sur une fausse substantialisation, et dont il voit la manifestation la plus pure dans la religion gnostique du manichéisme. Or, comme l’on sait, Antoine est fortement attiré par la Gnose qui est, au sens grec du terme, une religion de la connaissance. Avec les adhérents de la Gnose il partage le dualisme entre un monde matériel, terrestre et un principe premier d’essence divine dans l’au-delà. Ainsi faut-il se poser la question s’il réussit finalement à surmonter le dualisme en recevant la connaissance ou bien si les dualismes continuent à persister dans le texte. La lecture de la Tentation mène à un double résultat : D’un point de vue macro-structurel, l’élément gnostique reste le non-surmontement du dualisme, lequel s’exprime sur le plan rhétorique par la résistance de l’allégorique dans le texte. A 72-year-old man had noted the sudden onset of visual Hallucinations one year before, specifying the time and body position in a 4-week, 24-h diary. Thereafter, he underwent video-polysomnography (VPSG), brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), angiography (MRA), proton spectroscopy ( 1 H MRS), and single photon emission tomography (SPECT). Patient’s diaries and VPSG showed a strong clustering of hallucinatory experiences during the evening/night time while lying in supine position, similar to Hypnagogic Hallucination and sleep paralysis in supine position. Repeated episodes of REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) occurred during the night. MRI and MRA showed an elongated and dilated left internal carotid artery displacing the left subthalamus upwards, and 1 H MRS relatively decreased N -acetyl-aspartate in the left subthalamus. Brain SPECT during PH revealed hypoperfusion in the right temporal region and hyperperfusion in the left occipital and right opercular regions (the latter possibly related to the patient’s awareness of unreality). PH resolved with serotonergic (citalopram) therapy.

    Background Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a chronic neurologic disorder defined by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, Hallucinations and disrupted nocturnal sleep, typically with onset during childhood/ adolescence. Pediatric NT1 is associated with limitations on children's activities and achievements, especially poor performance at school, difficulty with peers due to disease symptoms and comorbidities including depression, obesity, and precocious puberty. Sodium oxybate (SO) is a sodium salt of γ-hydroxybutyric (GHB) acid and is greatly effective in treating cataplexy and excessive daytime sleepiness in NT1 and it can be helpful also for sleep disruption, Hypnagogic Hallucination and sleep paralysis in these patients. Method We conducted a research of literature into bibliographic databases regarding NT1 features in childhood and the possible option treatment with SO in this kind of patient population. Results We reported sixteen papers focusing on symptom presentation and on clinical and metabolic features of children affected with NT1. Furthermore, we reported 24 manuscripts focusing on SO biological actions and pharmacological properties and on the few but important available studies (8) conducted in NT1 children under SO therapy. Conclusion Although in the majority of patients develop NT1 during childhood, there are no approved treatments for pediatric NT1. However, SO has been widely used off-label to treat narcolepsy symptoms in children and adolescents with NT1 in non-controlled studies, showing a similar safety profile and therapeutic response to adult patients. Ongoing pediatric therapy is based only on observational data shared among sleep disorders clinicians.
