Reproductive Dynamics of the Neotropical Treefrog Hypsiboas albopunctatus (Anura, Hylidae)

HaddadAbstract:Abstract To understand the seasonal reproductive dynamics of Hypsiboas albopunctatus, a Neotropical treefrog, we studied the following components: 1) the influence of abiotic factors on seasonality, 2) how this seasonality relates to population dynamics, and 3) male breeding recruitment. We conducted fieldwork every month from August 2007 to July 2008 within an ecotone connecting semideciduous Atlantic Forest and Cerrado (Brazilian Savanna) in Sao Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. Over the course of the prolonged breeding season, we recorded the maximum number of calling males and measured their snout–vent lengths; we then compared our data from the beginning and the end of the breeding season. We found that the breeding pattern of H. albopunctatus is correlated with climatic, physical, and biological factors. Male competition and aggression varied according to the population density, most likely as a function of resource availability. A New Species of Hypsiboas from The Atlantic Forest of Southeastern Brazil (Amphibia: Anura: Hylidae)

HaddadAbstract:We describe a new species of Hypsiboas of the Hypsiboas pulchellus species group from highland streams of the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. Vocalizations, egg-mass, and tadpole are also described. We compared the new species with other species of the Hypsiboas pulchellus species group. The new species is most similar to Hypsiboas semiguttatus, its sister species, and Hypsiboas curupi, from which it differs in advertisement call and larval morphology. We provide information on natural history, phylogenetic relationships, embryos, geographic distribution, and conservation.

Vocalizations and comments on the relationships of Hypsiboas ericae (Amphibia, Hylidae)

HaddadAbstract:The vocalizations of Hypsiboas ericae (Caramaschi & Cruz, 2000) are described and new information on the external morphology and osteology of the species are presented. H. ericae presents a bony spine in the prepolex and the individuals can present green or brown dorsal color, as other species of the Hypsiboas pulchellus (Dumeril & Bibron, 1841) species group. The vocalizations of H. ericae are similar to the vocalizations of Hypsiboas bischoffi (Boulenger, 1887), Hypsiboas guentheri (Boulenger, 1886), and other species in the H. polytaenius (Cope, 1870 "1869") clade of the H. pulchellus species group, but some osteological aspects are different to those found in the majority of the species of this group.

A new species of Hypsiboas (Anura: Hylidae) from the atlantic forest of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, with comments on its conservation status

HaddadAbstract:Abstract A new species of Hypsiboas is described from the Atlantic Forest in Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil. The new species is morphologically similar to Hypsiboas marginatus, from which it differs by its smaller size, flanks with white blotches, a white stripe on the upper lip exceeding posteriorly to the tympanum, a white dorsolateral stripe reaching the inguinal region, tadpole with body black, tail whitish-yellow translucent, and labial tooth row formula 2(2)/5(1). The new species inhabits Atlantic Forest environments within mountain ranges from eastern Santa Catarina State, denominate Serras do Leste Catarinense, while H. marginatus occurs in the Serra Geral mountain range, in southern Santa Catarina and northeast Rio Grande do Sul State, and thus have allopatric distributions. Redescription of Hypsiboas Semiguttatus, with the Description of a New Species of the Hypsiboas pulchellus Group

We also describe a new species, previously confused with H. semiguttatus from Misiones, Argentina, and potentially from Brazil. This new species differs from H. semiguttatus in being more robust, having a tadpole with complete marginal papillation (no anterior gap), and a labial tooth row formula of 3/5. We discuss the status of populations previously assigned to H. semiguttatus and discuss the relationships of the new species within the Hypsiboas pulchellus group.

The nomenclatural status of Rana gaimardii Bory de Saint-Vincent, 1828, and Hyla quoyi Bory de Saint-Vincent, 1828 (Anura, Hylidae)

Rana gaimardii and its combination Hyla gaimardi, a nomen oblitum under Article 23.9.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, may be removed from the synonymy of Hypsiboas boans (Linnaeus, 1758) and included in the synonymy of Hypsiboas faber (Wied-Neuwied, 1821) to improve the geographic distribution of both species. Hyla quoyi Bory de Saint-Vincent, 1828, considered by Frost (2010) as incertae sedis in the Hylinae and as a nomen oblitum under the Article 23.9.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, if available would replace the well established name Hypsiboas prasinus (Burmeister, 1856); therefore, to improve the nomenclatural status of both species, Hyla quoyi must be included in the synonymy of H. prasinus as a nomen oblitum. Hypsiboas prasinus is a nomen protectum relative to Hyla quoyi, a nomen oblitum.

The new species is characterized by its medium size (CRA 25.9–31.8 mm in males; 33.6 mm in female), head width about 27% of SVL, snout rounded in dorsal and lateral views, supra-cloacal crest and calcar absent, fingers with developed discs, similar to toe discs, webbing poorly developed between fingers, moderately developed between toes, and dorsal color pattern composed of four longitudinal pale brown stripes, separated by three narrow dark brown stripes, each pale brown stripe having dark brown longitudinal lines.

Hylin a1 (Hy-a1, IFGAILPLALGALKNLIK-NH2) is a peptide extracted from the skin secretion of the frog Hypsiboas albopunctatus , which displays antimicrobial and hemolytic activities. We report here structural studies of Hy-a1 using different techniques such as fluorescence, CD and NMR. Our data showed that Hy-a1 acquires a well defined amphipathic α-helix when interacting with a membrane-like environment. Furthermore, Hy-a1 presented different affinity when compared to membranes of zwitterionic or anionic lipid composition. Finally, we proposed a molecular interaction model of this peptide with micelles.

This novel peptide, named hylin a1 (Hy-a1), consists of 18 amino acid residues (IFGAILPLALGALKNLIK-NH 2 ). The α-helical structure of the synthetic hylin a1 peptide was confirmed by CD spectroscopy in the presence of 60% (v/v) TFE. The synthetic peptide displayed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria including Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , Enterococcus faecalis , Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and also against fungi ( Candida albicans , C. krusei , C. parapsilosis and Cryptococcus neoformans ) . Hylin a1 was also able to disrupt human erytrocytes (HC 50 = 18 μM). Similarity analysis using PSI-BLAST revealed 50–44% of identity to maximins Hv, H16, H15 and H10 from Bombina maxima and also to hylins b1 and b2 (Hy-b1 and Hy-b2) from Hypsiboas lundii (synonym: Hyla biobeba ).

Extended Vocal Repertoire in Hypsiboas punctatus (Anura: Hylidae)
Journal of Herpetology, 2015Co-Authors: Andrés Eduardo Brunetti, Carlos Alberto Taboada, Julián FaivovichAbstract:Abstract Male Hypsiboas punctatus emit seven different types of calls: three consist of repeated trains of notes, and four are single-note calls with frequency modulation. Behavioral observations allowed assigning the calls to specific functions: (1) and (2) advertisement calls (short and long duration), (3) territorial signaling, (4) courtship interactions, (5)–(7) aggressive interactions (aggressive, fighting, and release calls). All calls consist of a single note and possess harmonic structure. The harmonic structure from the advertisement call suggests a missing fundamental frequency. Advertisement calls exhibit inter- and intraindividual variation in the dominant frequency. Our results indicate that previous comparisons among vocalizations of H. punctatus were based on different types of calls.

A New Andean Species of the Hypsiboas pulchellus Group: Adults, Calls, and Phylogenetic Relationships

Calls of both H. melanopleura and the new species are described. The new species is more similar to H. melanopleura and H. palaestes but differs in morphological characters and in coloration pattern. The new species and H. melanopleura are included in a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the H. pulchellus Group that shows them to be sister species and forming a second, independent, Andean clade within the group. New collecting sites for H. melanopleura are provided with the first record in the Region of Junin and the distribution of H. melanopleura, H. palaestes, and the new species is illustrated in a map.

Zootaxa, 2008Co-Authors: Francisco Kolenc, Claudio Borteiro, Leandro Alcalde, Diego Baldo, Dario Cardozo, Julián FaivovichAbstract:We studied the external and oral cavity morphology of the tadpoles of eight species of Hypsiboas in the H. albopunctatus, H. faber, H. punctatus and H. pulchellus species groups. After a review of the available information about larval external and oral cavity morphology, no character state seems to be synapomorphic for Hypsiboas. The presence of a fleshy projection in the inner margin of the nostrils and rounded vacuities of the anteromedial surface of the choanae (pending the confirmation of the latter in Hyloscirtus and Myersiohyla) seems to be synapomorphic for the tribe Cophomantini, as previously noticed by other authors. Some putative synapomorphies are suggested for some species groups of Hypsiboas, but a denser sampling is needed to study the taxonomic distribution of these character states, in order to determine which clades they may support. The presence of lateral flaps with labial teeth in the oral disc is a variable feature of many species in the H. faber and H. pulchellus groups. A spiracular tube free from the body wall is present in some species, mostly in the H. albopunctatus group, but also in the H. rufitelus, H. faber and H. pulchellus groups. Unique ventrolateral cumules of neuromasts are present in H. faber, and also in some species of other groups of Hypsiboas and of the sister genus Aplastodiscus. Our results highlight the importance of studying the taxonomic distribution of many character states that were sometimes overlooked in tadpole descriptions but seem relevant to test phylogenetic hypothesis.
