    Abstract:

    The Information Search Process (ISP) is a six-stage model of the users� holistic experience in the Process of Information seeking. The ISP model, based on two decades of empirical reSearch, identifies three realms of experience: the affective (feelings), the cognitive (thoughts), and the physical (actions) common to each stage. These studies were among the first to investigate the affective aspects or the feelings of a person in the Process of Information seeking along with the cognitive and physical aspects. Central to the ISP is the notion that uncertainty, both affective and cognitive, increases and decreases in the Process of Information seeking. A principle of uncertainty for Information seeking is proposed that states that Information commonly increases uncertainty in the early stages of the Search Process. Increased uncertainty indicates a zone of intervention for intermediaries and system designers

  • Student Learning through Ohio School Libraries, Part 1: How Effective School Libraries Help Students

    Abstract:

    This article provides an overview of the Student Learning Through Ohio School Libraries reSearch study undertaken from October 2002 through December 2003. The study involved 39 effective school libraries across Ohio; the participants included 13,123 students in grades 3 to 12 and 879 faculty. The focus question of the study was: How do school libraries help students with their learning in and away from school? The findings, both quantitative and qualitative, showed that effective school libraries help students with their learning in many ways across the various grade levels. Effective school libraries play an active rather than passive role in students' learning. The concept of help was understood in two ways: helps-as-inputs, or help that engages students in the Process of effective learning through the school library; and helps-as-outcomes/impacts, or demonstrated outcomes of meaningful learning-academic achievement and personal agency. The study shows that an effective school library is not just Informational, but transformational and formational, leading to knowledge creation, knowledge production, knowledge dissemination, and knowledge use, as well as the development of Information values. Introduction Historically, library services worldwide have been based on the assumption that they contribute to the social good, facilitating personal decision-making, societal well-being, the growth of democracy, and the development of a knowledgeable society (Kranich, 2001). Yet understanding how libraries actually help people remains a vexing question. Increasingly, service providers, funding authorities, and publics are calling for clear evidence that expended resources actually produce benefits for people (Durrance & Fisher-Pettigrew, 2002). School libraries are not immune to such calls. In an environment of reduced budgets and staffing, and a prevailing public perception that school libraries are marginal rather than integral to student learning outcomes, there is an urgent need for school librarians to demonstrate and substantiate the vital effect of their school library program on student learning and to take an evidence-based approach to practice (Todd, 2002a, 2002b). How Do School Libraries Help? The central concept of this reSearch is help, and it is embedded in the focus question: How do school libraries help students with their learning in and away from school? Help refers to both the institutional involvement through advice and assistance in the Information experiences of people (helps-as-inputs) and the effect of this involvement on the people it serves (helps-as-outcomes/impacts). This study has been informed by four streams of literature: the Information Search Process, Information intents, outcomes measurement, and Information literacy standards. Each is briefly elaborated here to establish the theoretical underpinnings and reSearch base of this study. The Information Search Process Kuhlthau's reSearch (1991, 1994, 1999, 2004) provides an understanding of the cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of the Information Search Process and presents an understanding of the Information-to-knowledge experience of people. This work emphasizes how people may be enabled and supported in their quest to seek meaning and develop understanding through Information-seeking and use. Mediation and intervention as key help mechanisms are central to this Process. Kuhlthau (2004) defines mediation as the "human intervention to assist Information seeking and learning from Information access and use.... a person who assists, guides, enables, and otherwise intervenes in another person's Information Search Process" (p. 107). Intervention centers on how "mediators become involved in the constructive Process of another person ... in Information seeking and use" (p. 127). Kuhlthau's reSearch shows that most interventions tend to be based on source and certainty orientations, that is, matching a person's query with the organized collection and often with little attention given to the holistic experience of users in the Process of constructing new understandings and meanings. …

This seminar will present a Process approach to Information literacy that is based on the model of the Information Search Process developed through extensive reSearch over two decades. The ISP is proposed as a way of establishing basic Information literacy in pre-service programs.

    Abstract:

    The study reported in this paper is part of a programme of ongoing reSearch based on the model of the Information Search Process (ISP) developed in a series of prior studies by Kuhlthau. This study sought to gain a better understanding of the variety of tasks that involve lawyers as a particular group of Information workers, how they use Information to accomplish their work, and the role mediators play in their Process of Information seeking and use. Findings revealed that these lawyers frequently were involved in complex tasks that required a constructive Process of interpreting, learning and creating. To accomplish these complex tasks, they preferred printed texts over computer databases primarily because computer databases required well‐specified requests and did not offer an option for examining a wide range of Information at one time. These lawyers called for an active potential role for mediators in ‘just for me’ services. ‘Just for me’ services would encompass designing systems to provide a wider range of access more compatible with the Process of construction, applying and developing principles of classification that would offer a more uniform system for organising and accessing files, and providing direction in filtering the overwhelming amount of Information available on electronic resources.

    With the growing volume of obtainable medical Information and scientific literature, it is crucial that students in the field of allied health professions develop and refine the reSearch skill set necessary to effectively find, retrieve, analyze, and use this Information. This skill set can be effectively developed using student inquiry; an active learning Process where students answer questions using reSearch and data analysis. Therefore, with the pedagogical goal of developing Information literacy among a cohort of allied health professional trainees, first year students studying human anatomy completed inquiry-based projects that were structured within the framework of the Information Search Process. This article thoroughly describes the conceptualization, creation, improvement, implementation, and assessment of the projects beginning with version one, the Student Inquiry Projects. Following a pilot of the Student Inquiry Projects various evidence-based improvements resulted in the final project version called the Inquiry Guided Learning Projects (IGLPs). A full assessment of the IGLPs revealed that students' self-perceived confidence improved for all tested reSearch skills including: reSearch question development, reSearch question selection, exploration of peer-review literature, acquisition of resources, effective communication of results, and literature citation (all P < 0.05). Furthermore, six months following project completion students retained improved confidence in reSearch question development and effective communication of results, with 90% of students indicating the IGLPs were directly responsible for these improvements. By guiding students through the Information Search Process, the IGLPs successfully developed reSearch confidence among allied health trainees.

    The study used naturalistic methods to investigate the metacognitive knowledge of 10 adolescents as they Searched for, selected, evaluated, and used Information for a school-based, inquiry project. The study identified thirteen attributes of metacognitive knowledge related to the Information Search Process: Knowing your strengths and weaknesses, knowing that you don’t know, building a base, scaffolding, communicating, changing course, balancing, understanding curiosity, understanding time and effort, understanding memory, pulling back and reflecting, connecting, and parallel thinking. The results contribute to the understanding of adolescent Informationseeking behavior and have implications for Information literacy instruction.

    Abstract:

    This chapter examines adolescent metacognitive knowledge in a fresh light and answers some methodological questions related to the investigation of the deepest layers of thinking during the Information Search. It does so by presenting a study that used an ethnographic approach to investigate the metacognitive knowledge of 10 adolescents, aged 16 to 18, over the course of four months, and in a variety of settings –– home, school, public libraries –– as they Searched for, collected, and then used Information for a school project. The study was framed by Flavel's model of metacognition (1977) and Kuhlthau's Information Search Process (ISP) model, a six-stage, multidimensional model of Information problem solving (1991, 2004). The chapter begins with a discussion about the ISP, metacognitive knowledge, and its potential for Information seeking. The chapter then presents the findings of the study as a set of gaps and strengths of adolescent metacognitive knowledge, and concludes with commentary about the challenges and rewards related to conducting reSearch with young people and suggestions for future areas of reSearch.

    Abstract:

    Introduction. Members of the millennial generation (born after 1982) have come of age in a society infused with technology and Information. It is unclear how they determine the validity of Information gathered, or whether or not validity is even a concern. Previous Information Search models based on mediated Searches with different age groups may not adequately describe the Search behaviours of this generation. Method. The longitudinal study discussed here examined the Information behaviour of undergraduate college students who were members of the millennial generation. Data were collected from the students using surveys throughout an Information Search Process as part of an assigned reSearch project. Analysis. Quantitative analysis was carried out on the data, which related to 80 individual subjects and evaluation of 758 documents. Results. Statistically significant findings suggest that millennial generation Web Searchers proceed erratically through an Information Search Process, make only a limited attempt to evaluate the quality or validity of Information gathered, and may perform some level of 'backfilling' or adding sources to a reSearch project before final submission of the work. Conclusions. These findings indicate that the Search behaviour of millennial generation Searchers may be problematic. Existing Search models are appropriate; it is the execution of the model by the Searcher within the context of the Search environment that is at issue.

    Relevance judgments occur within an Information Search Process, where time, context and situation can impact the judgments. The determination of relevance is dependent on a number of factors and variables which include the criteria used to determine relevance. The relevance judgment Process and the criteria used to make those judgments are manifestations of the cognitive changes which occur during the Information Search Process. Understanding why these relevance criteria choices are made, and how they vary over the Information Search Process can provide important Information about the dynamic relevance judgment Process. This Information can be used to guide the development of more adaptive Information retrieval systems which respond to the cognitive changes of users during the Information Search Process. The reSearch data analyzed here was collected in two separate studies which examined a subject's relevance judgment over an Information Search Process. Statistical analysis was used to examine these results and determine if there were relationships between criteria selections, relevance judgments, and the subject's progression through the Information Search Process. Findings confirm and extend findings of previous studies, providing strong statistical evidence of an association between the Information Search Process and the choices of relevance criteria by users, and identifying specific changes in the user preferences for specific criteria over the course of the Information Search Process.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine changes in relevance assessments, specifically the selection of relevance criteria by subjects as they move through the Information Search Process.Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines the relevance criteria choices of 39 subjects in relation to Search stage. Subjects were assigned a specific Search task in a controlled test. Statistics were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi‐square goodness‐of‐fit tests.Findings – The statistically significant findings identified a number of commonly reported relevance criteria, which varied over an Information Search Process for relevant and partially relevant judgments.
