Assessing Intangible Benefit of Mobile Telephony on Agrarian Rural Community of North Shoa, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia: The Case of Habado kebele

Data were collected through the use of focus group Discussion, key informants and personal observation. The key informant interview was conducted with developmental agent, administrator of kebele and elders to get real information about the problem. The focus group discussion was held with the kebele elders that were selected randomly to collect the relevant data. Researcher also collected available data by observing mobile telephony related situation. Qualitative data generated from these sources were compiled, organized, summarized, interpreted and narrated based on the concept of Intangible Benefit of mobile telephony on agrarian rural community. Likely the result of the discussion revealed that Intangible Benefit of mobile phone on agrarian rural community were tremendous. Accordingly, farmers’ confidence, competitive advantage of farmers, discussion ability of farmers, time management’s ability of farmers, farmers-merchant transparency, and moral of farmers were boosted intangibly through mobile telephony for further improvements of crop production and productivity in Habado Kebele. The identified Intangible Benefit of mobile phone on education in Habado kebeles is that Mobile phone gives morale for the female students to attend school, and mobile phone enabled poor families to attend school. And also The identified Intangible Benefit of mobile phone on health in Habado kebele were that Collapse of inefficient traditional health service, Taking care of family from distant, and Mobile phone brought behavioral change to solve health condition. Based on the discussion and conclusion made the Habado kebeles communities should be encouraged to use mobile telephony for further improvements. Keywords: Intangible, Mobile Telephony

Cost-Benefit evaluation for building intelligent systems with special consideration on Intangible Benefits and energy consumption

Intelligent buildings are expected to provide high-efficient, convenient, comfortable and energy-saving built environment so as to bring additional Benefits. However, problems like sensor faults and control strategy flaws may result in low performance and high energy consumptions and maintenance costs are needed as well. Thus it is needed to synthetically evaluate the costs and Benefits of intelligent systems to help building investors to make decisions. This paper proposes a cost-Benefit evaluation method for building intelligent systems. Life cycle net present value (NPV) of all the costs and Benefits, including tangible and Intangible, is used as an index to evaluate the performance of the building intelligent systems. The proposed method puts emphases on the quantitative evaluation of Intangible Benefits using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to determine the weights of each aspects of Intangible Benefit. The building energy consumptions are taken as an another emphasis as well. The proposed method is applied to evaluate three actual buildings to check its feasibility and effectiveness. Sensitivity analysis of NPV to energy consumption of the case study buildings shows that the energy consumption increase or decrease caused by different performances of intelligent systems can influence the positive or negative of NPV, which implies the building intelligent systems are worth of investment or not.

The peace dividend as an Intangible Benefit in mega-project justification: A comparative content analysis of the Dead Sea-Red Sea Canal

Their controversial nature often requires elaborate justifications including the use of Intangible Benefits. One Intangible Benefit that has increasingly been raised in support of mega-projects is the peace dividend. Yet, to date, few studies have systematically addressed the following questions: to what extent, by whom, and in what ways is the peace dividend used as a strategic tool when it comes to justifying contested mega-projects? This article examines the use of different types of arguments in mega-project justification, with a focus on the peace dividend as a political Intangible Benefit. Through a comparative content analysis of coverage of the Dead Sea-Red Sea Canal project in Israeli and Jordanian news media, we illustrate how the peace dividend is employed as a framing device by both project supporters and opponents and how it is positioned in relation to other types of Benefits and costs. We found that the marketing of contested mega-projects to public and political constituencies entails a variety of justifications, reflected in the various framing modes used to influence public opinion in both Israel and Jordan. The nature and intensity of these justifications are sensitive to the media environment and the degree of economic development. Our findings indicate that the peace dividend as a line of defense for the project is the most controversial of all other justification domains.

The Use of Intangible Benefits for Promoting Contested Policies: The Case of Geopolitical Benefits and the Israeli Gas Policy

Geopolitics represents one type of Intangible Benefit. Despite a few examples on the use of geopolitics to promote contested projects, there is a gap in the literature on how geopolitical argumentation is constructed for the purpose of promoting resource-based policies. Hence, the aim of this study is to use an Israeli case study to examine how geopolitical constructs are used to promote competing energy policies concerning recent gas discoveries and to provide rudimentary insights on the implications for policy making. It was found that the geopolitical rationale was an appealing rhetorical device for all players as it is both unquantifiable and hence difficult to disprove and is rooted in the Israeli societal context.
