  • Consumer preferences for alternative pest Management Practices used during production of an edible and a non-edible greenhouse crop
    Journal of Pest Science, 2014
    Co-Authors: A. Grygorczyk, J. Turecek, I. Lesschaeve
    Abstract:

The current study aimed to determine how the pest Management Practice applied during crop production may impact consumer purchase intentions of an edible (tomato) and a non-edible (chrysanthemum) greenhouse crop. The study examined five pest Management Practices and applied conjoint analysis to evaluate the relative importance of the pest Management Practice compared to several other product factors (price, benefit claims related to the pest Management Practice, tomato variety/flower colour, quality) in contributing to consumers’ purchase intentions. Out of the factors examined, price (26–29 % relative importance) and the pest Management Practice (22–25 % relative importance) were the most important to consumers. In both studies, there were segments of the sampled populations (13.5–24 %) for whom the pest Management Practice was the most important factor driving purchase decisions. These segments had significantly more consumers with low confidence in science and technology and preferred products grown using organic Practices or pests’ natural predators. In the tomatoes study (crop intended for consumption), the proportion of pest Management conscious consumers nearly doubled compared to the chrysanthemums study. Findings suggest that making consumers aware that a product has been produced using pests’ natural predators (i.e. using biocontrol strategies) for pest Management could convince a significant segment of the population to purchase these products over other similar products. When the crop is edible, a higher proportion of consumers becomes concerned with the production Practice.

  • Records Management Practice
International Journal of Information Management, 2016
Co-Authors: Umi Asma’ Mokhtar, Zawiyah Mohammad Yusof
    Abstract:

This paper discusses the issues embrace in managing records in Malaysia and the records Management models that relate to classifying records.20 records Management models were reviewed using a content analysis technique to obtain information and identify gaps in records classification, while the issues were identified to learn the Practice carried out in targeted case study. The finding from the case study revealed that the classification and other elements in the records Management principles were not referred to, instead the focus was only from the information technology perspective. This paper identifies electronic records Management Practice with particular reference to Syariah Courts in Malaysia specifying on classification matter. Classification is paramount for a complete records Management other than safeguarding vital records upon determining their value for business continuity. Prior to that, a number of records Management models were analysed with the aim to identify whether the Syariah Courts hold onto a specific model in executing electronic records Management. Model generally takes the form of inputs, processes, and outputs or expected results in a simplified representation of a limited part of reality with related elements. The study adopts a survey method with interview and document content analysis as the techniques in analysing the models. The interview served as a snapshot study with the aim to reveal the issues embraced by the e-Syariah systems namely the Syariah Court Case Management System. Upon analysing the existing models, it was discovered there are flaws in the existing models making them inappropriate for implementation as they are too theoretical in nature. Furthermore, none of the models address on records classification. On the other hand, the interviews depicted that the electronic records Management carried out in the Syariah Court is without the adoption of any model. It is due to this fact that the system was developed without taking into consideration the classification function but instead was designed for storage and retrieval purposes only.

  • Assessing Framing of Uncertainties in Water Management Practice
    Water Resources Management, 2009
Co-Authors: Nicola Isendahl, Art Dewulf, Greet François, Marcela Brugnach, Sabine Möllenkamp, Claudia Pahl-wostl
    Abstract:

Dealing with uncertainties in water Management is an important issue and is one which will only increase in light of global changes, particularly climate change. So far, uncertainties in water Management have mostly been assessed from a scientific point of view, and in quantitative terms. In this paper, we focus on the perspectives from water Management Practice, adopting a qualitative approach. We consider it important to know how uncertainties are framed in water Management Practice in order to develop Practice relevant strategies for dealing with uncertainties. Framing refers to how people make sense of the world. With the aim of identifying what are important parameters for the framing of uncertainties in water Management Practice, in this paper we analyze uncertainty situations described by decision-makers in water Management. The analysis builds on a series of “Uncertainty Dialogues” carried out within the NeWater project with water managers in the Rhine, Elbe and Guadiana basins in 2006. During these dialogues, representatives of these river basins were asked what uncertainties they encountered in their professional work life and how they confronted them. Analysing these dialogues we identified several important parameters of how uncertainties get framed. Our assumption is that making framing of uncertainty explicit for water managers will allow for better dealing with the respective uncertainty situations.

  • construction and demolition waste best Management Practice in europe
    Resources Conservation and Recycling, 2018
Co-Authors: Joseluis Galvezmartos, David Styles, Harald Schoenberger, Barbara Zeschmarlahl
    Abstract:

Abstract Construction and demolition waste constitutes a large fraction of all the waste generated in Europe. Its specific impact can be considered rather low, but the large generated volume and embodied resource makes this waste stream an important focus of current European policies. The European Commission has proposed new targets and goals for this waste stream in the Circular Economy package, but, given the rather heterogeneous landscape of waste Management Practice across Member States, new approaches that take into account the entire value chain of the construction sector are urgently required. This paper synthesises core principles and linked best Practices for the Management of construction and demolition waste across the entire construction value chain. Systematic implementation of these best Practices could dramatically improve resource efficiency and reduce environmental impact by: reducing waste generation, minimising transport impacts, maximising re-use and recycling by improving the quality of secondary materials and optimising the environmental performance of treatment methods.
