Megavitamin Therapy for different cases
2007Co-Authors: A HofferAbstract:Recently when I was sorting out my reprints on ascorbic acid I ran across a complete file on my first psychotic patient given large doses of ascorbic acid alone. I have referred to this case elsewhere, but have not given any clinical detail. Since this may well be the first case ever treated in this way, I think it may be useful to report the details. Mrs. V. H., age 47, was referred to the General Hospital, Munroe Wing, Regina, because she was delusional, very depressed, and threatened to kill herself. She was admitted December 9, 1952. She was large, obese, masculine in appearance with a lot of hair on her face. Her complexion was pale and muddy. She suffered from perceptual changes, hearing the voice of her priest, she was confused, delusional, with no insight, and was very agitated, restless, and depressed with marked mood swings. About four years before her jealousy of her husband suddenly became intense and she accused him of having an affair with his secretary. She then threatened to kill herself. One year before she was admitted she had her right breast

A neurological form of schizophrenia
2026Co-Authors: Hoffer A.Abstract:A case is described of a young woman who first showed manifestations of schizophrenia in childhood. At the age of 13 years evidence was present of what was authoritatively diagnosed as a progressive degenerative cerebellar syndrome and her condition continued to deteriorate. Improvement commenced shortly after the institution of Megavitamin Therapy, notably nicotinic acid 3 grams daily. Her subsequent educational progress was satisfactory and her social rehabilitation is now complete. No medication other than nicotinic acid is required

Orthomolecular Medicine, Micronutrients, High Dose Vitamin C, and Cancer: Why it Should be Revisited?
Herald Scholarly Open Access, 2018Co-Authors: Raúl H Morales-borgesAbstract:Orthomolecular Medicine is a form of alternative medicine, with a purpose to maintain human health through nutritional supplementation. The concept builds on the idea of an optimal nutritional environment in the body and that diseases reflect deficiencies in this environment. Treatment for disease involves attempts to correct the imbalances or deficiencies based on individual biochemistry by use of substances such as vitamins, minerals, within others. The approach is referred as Megavitamin Therapy, such as high dose intravenous vitamin C. The practice has evolved and uses doses of vitamins and minerals many times higher than the recommended dietary intake. Micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, play crucial roles in human nutrition, including the prevention and treatment of various diseases and conditions such as cancer. In Oncology, response rates, survival rates, toxicity profiles, compliance and cost-effectiveness as well as integrating psycho-social issues are related to the nutritional status of cancer patients. We need to work harder regarding the use of those micronutrients in this 21st Century for the benefit of our cancer patients

Vitamins: Nutrients, Hormones, Drugs or Poisons?
2026Co-Authors: Hamilton J. R.Abstract:Conventional concepts of daily vitamin requirements may need revision. For example, recent studies on Vitamin C suggest that the recommended daily allowance, while it certainly prevents scurvy, may not saturate the body. Certain disease states and medications raise the daily requirement for specific vitamins. Most claims made by proponents of Megavitamin Therapy are unproven and without convincing theoretical bases. However, in at least two instances there is enough suggestive evidence to warrant more extensive trials. Although it seems that many vitamins can be given in large doses safely, Vitamins A and D and nicotinic acid, because of their toxicity, must be used with caution
