    Abstract:

    Leadership identity is the most critical challenge for Mental Health counseling students. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) does not mandate courses in leadership development. This quantitative study investigated master’s level Mental Health Counselor student leadership identity and factors for pursuing a doctoral degree. Results indicated that the variable gender predicted socially responsible leadership yet did not predict intent to pursue a doctoral degree. Based on these results, master’s level counseling students could benefit from leadership curriculum as preparation for leadership positions within the field and influence pursuance of higher learning.     Student leadership identity development is becoming one of the most critical challenges in preparing Mental Health counseling students for the professional world. Leadership aids in the development of Counselor self-efficacy and Counselor professional identity development. But the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) does not mandate master\u27s level Mental Health counseling programs to incorporate leadership curriculum, although current research indicates that Counselors demonstrate leadership skills with clients and within organizational roles. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate master\u27s level Mental Health Counselor leadership identity and determine whether Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS) scores for Change, Consciousness of Self, and Congruence (as measured by the SRLS-R2), gender, and/or race predict intent to pursue a doctoral degree among master\u27s level Mental Health counseling students enrolled in CACREP-accredited counseling programs. The SRLS-R2, designed from the social change model of leadership development, was used to collect data from 61 master\u27s level counseling student participants regarding leadership identity using Bandura\u27s social cognitive theory as a framework for student learning. Results indicated that the variable gender predicted socially responsible leadership, yet did not predict intent to pursue a doctoral degree. Based on these results, master\u27s level counseling students could benefit from leadership curriculum as preparation for leadership positions within the field and influence pursuance of higher learning

  • Master’s Level Mental Health Counselor Experiences Working With Offenders in Correctional Settings

    Forensic Mental Health is considered a specialty at a doctoral level, yet a majority of Mental Health services in correctional settings are provided by master’s-level Mental Health Counselors. These clinicians lack the specialized education, training, and experience needed to work with offenders in correctional settings. There is limited research on how master’s-level Counselors experience providing Mental Health services in correctional settings and how they manage challenges. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of master’s-level Mental Health Counselors working with offenders in correctional settings. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to facilitate an understanding of the lived experiences of the nine Mental Health Counselors who participated in this study. Data were obtained through semistructured interviews and data was analyzed by reading transcribed interviews, coding emerging themes, analyzing transcripts, and identifying patterns. After data analysis, the following themes emerged: (a) lack of specialized education and training, (b) environMental challenges, (c) institutional culture, (d) competing goals and values, and (e) Mental Health treatment in correctional settings. The results confirmed that Mental Health Counselors lacked the specialized education, training, experience, and supervision needed to effectively treat offenders in correctional settings while simultaneously managing the myriad of challenges associated with working in a correctional environment. This study promotes social change by highlighting the need to better prepare correctional Mental Health Counselors while considering the need for ongoing support and training to help them manage correctional challenges

  • Mental Health Counselor qualities for a diverse clientele linking empathy universal diverse orientation and emotional intelligence

    Abstract:

    We examined how culturally relevant variables, including universal-diverse orientation (UDO), an attitude characterized by awareness and acceptance of similarities and differences between self and others, and emotional intelligence, the ability to accurately monitor emotions, might be related to empathy.Two-hundred-and-eleven counseling graduate students completed measures of these variables, as well as a demographic sheet. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that UDO and emotional intelligence, along with gender, significantly explained variance in empathy. Implications for effective Mental Health counseling across diverse settings are discussed.
