    Abstract:

    Abstract Mosques are places of worship for Muslims with unique functional requirements and operational characteristics. They are partially or fully occupied for about an hour for five intermittent periods during the day. In hot climates, maintaining indoor thermal comfort requires a considerable amount of energy that can be reduced by proper operational zoning and effective HVAC operation strategies. The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of operational zoning and HVAC system intermittent operation strategies on the energy performance of Mosques while thermal comfort is maintained. Energy simulation modeling is used for evaluating alternative zoning and HVAC operation strategies. Results indicate that up to 23% reduction in annual cooling energy is achieved by employing suitable HVAC operation strategy and system over-sizing, and 30% reduction is achieved by appropriate operational zoning. Comparing the cooling energy consumption of HVAC summer continuous operation of an un-insulated mosque with the consumption of the insulated mosque with properly oversized HVAC system operated for 1 h during each prayer, indicated that as much as 46% of cooling energy reduction can be achieved. Furthermore, utilizing proper operational zoning and HVAC operation strategies is expected to bring about an additional significant energy reduction. Guidelines for mosque HVAC systems operation and thermal zoning are developed. These design/operation guidelines would provide a source of information for professionals to improve the thermal and energy performance of Mosques. This knowledge can also contribute towards the development of future energy-related design codes for Mosques.

    The study of mosque acoustics, with regard to acoustical characteristics, sound quality for speech intelligibility, and other applicable acoustic criteria, has been largely neglected. In this study a background as to why Mosques are designed as they are and how mosque design is influenced by worship considerations is given. In the study the acoustical characteristics of typically constructed contemporary Mosques in Saudi Arabia have been investigated, employing a well-known impulse response. Extensive field measurements were taken in 21 representative Mosques of different sizes and architectural features in order to characterize their acoustical quality and to identify the impact of air conditioning, ceiling fans, and sound reinforcement systems on their acoustics. Objective room-acoustic indicators such as reverberation time (RT) and clarity (C50) were measured. Background noise (BN) was assessed with and without the operation of air conditioning and fans. The speech transmission index (STI) was also evaluated with and without the operation of existing sound reinforcement systems. The existence of acoustical deficiencies was confirmed and quantified. The study, in addition to describing mosque acoustics, compares design goals to results obtained in practice and suggests acoustical target values for mosque design. The results show that acoustical quality in the investigated Mosques deviates from optimum conditions when unoccupied, but is much better in the occupied condition.

    Abstract This research investigates the acoustical characteristics of Mosques of the classical Ottoman period and the contemporary period. Kocatepe Mosque, the major mosque in Ankara, Turkey, as a case from the contemporary era is a unique combination of 16th century Ottoman aesthetics and 20th century technology. Although previous and recent Mosques have been inspired by this combination, the use of a reinforced concrete dome without cavity resonators could cause long reverberation times especially in low frequencies. The purpose of this study was to investigate this condition by studying Kocatepe Mosque. The acoustical characteristics of the mosque were analyzed by computer simulation. Objective room-acoustic indicators including reverberation time (RT), early decay time (EDT), clarity (C80), definition (D50), lateral fraction (LF), speech transmission index (STI) and strength (G) are presented.   • Sharia Adherence Mosque Survey: Correlations between Sharia Adherence and Violent Dogma in U.S. Mosques

    A random survey of 100 representative Mosques in the U.S. was conducted to measure the correlation between Sharia adherence and dogma calling for violence against non-believers.  Of the 100 Mosques surveyed, 51% had texts on site rated as severely advocating violence; 30% had texts rated as moderately advocating violence; and 19% had no violent texts at all.  Mosques that presented as Sharia adherent were more likely to feature violence-positive texts on site than were their non-Sharia-adherent counterparts.  In 84.5% of the Mosques, the imam recommended studying violence-positive texts.  The leadership at Sharia-adherent Mosques was more likely to recommend that a worshipper study violence-positive texts than leadership at non-Sharia-adherent Mosques.  Fifty-eight percent of the Mosques invited guest imams known to promote violent jihad.  The leadership of Mosques that featured violence-positive literature was more likely to invite guest imams who were known to promote violent jihad than was the leadership of Mosques that did not feature violence-positive literature on mosque premises.

Simulation and extensive field measurements had been taken in varies representative Mosques of different sizes and architectural features in order to characterize their acoustical quality and to identify the impact of its prayer hall form on their acoustics performance. Objective room-acoustic indicators such as reverberation time (RT), the early decay time (EDT), The D50 parameter (D-50) and clarity (C-50), were measured and calculated. The speech transmission index (STI) had been evaluated without the operation of existing sound reinforcement systems. The results will show the acoustical quality in the investigated Mosques, unoccupied case.

    Decoration in mosque of Islamic world divided into two categories namely through the architectural composition and applied decoration. This research basically focuses on applied decoration in interior of mosque. Some Mosques are highly decorated and some are less decorated. However certain Mosques are left undecorated. Decorating of mosque was intended to serves certain function. One of it is to create the feeling of Remembering Allah. At the same time certain Islamic scholars are highlighted that excessive decoration in mosque can cause bad effect such as distracting users’ attention. Therefore, this research intend to investigate how feeling of Remembering can be achieved and whether ornamentation motif in mosque distracting users through their perception. This research involved mix-method approach and two mosque as case study site as comparison. Quantitative is main method of this research where survey using questionnaire as instrument was distributed to users of both mosque. While, qualitative method involved face to face interview with imam, mosque community members, mosque organization leader as well academician. Based on site observation and initial interview with interior designers 4 variables found to differentiate between highly and less decorated mosque. There are namely color, quantity, position and typology of ornamentation motif. Result of research found that the most ornamentation that can relate users with remembering Allah is calligraphy. While in term of color, soft and light color can create feeling of serenity and calmness instead of bold and vibrant color.

    Mosques are decorated with either high or less decoration. The most part which decorated normally with decorative pattern especially on the kiblah wall. The decoration in the interior of mosque gives both negative and positive impacts to the mosque user. Some scholars are agreed with the ornamentation in the interior mosque through Islamic art concept and some are not based on the prophet’s mentioned tradition. Therefore this paper will present an overview of current literatures on the discussion about the ornamentation in interior mosque. This paper will cover the function of ornamentation and decorative pattern in interior mosque as well the advantages and disadvantages of using it.
