  • cultural diversity and its implications for intergroup relations
    Current opinion in psychology, 2020
    Co-Authors: Maykel Verkuyten, Kumar Yogeeswaran
    Abstract:

Discussions about diversity and Multiculturalism are commonplace in education, organizations, and all levels of public policy and government. The current paper discusses new developments in the psychological literature on the implications of diversity and Multiculturalism for intergroup relations by considering: (a) demographic diversity, (b) national policies on diversity and Multiculturalism, and (c) ideological beliefs and discourse about diversity and Multiculturalism. After considering the nuanced effects of diversity and Multiculturalism for intergroup relations, we consider the nature and implications of interculturalism, a new and emerging diversity approach that has received little attention in the psychological literature. We conclude by highlighting the importance of studying diversity across multiple levels of analysis, perspectives, and intergroup outcomes.

  • Multiculturalism and attitudes toward immigrants the impact of perceived cultural distance
    Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 2018
Co-Authors: Yara Mahfud, Maykel Verkuyten, Constantina Badea, Katherine J Reynolds
    Abstract:

Multiculturalism can be construed in different ways with different effects on majority members’ attitudes toward immigrant-origin groups. Thinking about why the broad goals of Multiculturalism are important for society might reduce feelings of outgroup threat and less prejudicial attitudes. In contrast, thinking about how exactly these goals can be accomplished might evoke feelings of threat that lead to prejudice. The aim of this experimental research conducted in France and the Netherlands was to examine the effect of these two construals of Multiculturalism of attitudes toward immigrants and whether these effects depend on perceived cultural distance. The findings show that a focus on why Multiculturalism is important for society is more beneficial for attitudes toward immigrant-origin groups for people perceiving relatively high cultural distance. In contrast, a focus on how the goals of Multiculturalism can be accomplished has a more detrimental effect on attitudes for people perceiving relatively lo...

  • Support for Multiculturalism and Minority Rights: The Role of National Identification and Out-group Threat
    Social Justice Research, 2009
    Co-Authors: Maykel Verkuyten
    Abstract:

Support for Multiculturalism and minority rights is examined in three studies among ethnic Dutch participants. Three models are tested for how national identification is related to perceived realistic and symbolic threats and to levels of support. Findings in all three studies are most in agreement with a ‘group identity lens’ model in which the relationship between national identification and support for Multiculturalism is mediated by perceived threat. In addition, in Study 3, authoritarianism was independently related to threat and support for immigrant and minority rights and not indirectly through national identification. Findings across the three studies confirm the stability of the results and the usefulness of the group identity lens model for understanding reactions toward Multiculturalism and minority rights.

  • Social Psychology and Multiculturalism
Social and Personality Psychology Compass, 2007
    Co-Authors: Maykel Verkuyten
    Abstract:

Questions of Multiculturalism give rise to lively and important debates in many countries and in many spheres of life. Diversity is considered desirable and necessary for the development of secure ethnic identities and positive intergroup relations, but is also challenged for being inequitable and a threat to social cohesion. After considering conceptions of Multiculturalism and relevant country differences, the paper discusses social psychological research on multicultural attitudes and the effect of Multiculturalism on intergroup relations. Subsequently, three issues are addressed that are central in debates about Multiculturalism and that present additional topics for social psychological research. The first concerns the importance of intragroup processes, the second the nature of religious identity and Islam in particular, and the third issue relates to tolerance and civil liberties.

  • Ethnic group identification and group evaluation among minority and majority groups: Testing the Multiculturalism hypothesis
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2005
    Co-Authors: Maykel Verkuyten
    Abstract:

Following social identity theory, the author hypothesized that members of minority groups are more likely than majority group members to endorse Multiculturalism more strongly and assimilationist thinking less strongly. In addition, the Multiculturalism hypothesis proposes that the more minority groups endorse the ideology of Multiculturalism (or assimilationism), the more (or less) likely they will be to identify with their ethnic in-group and to show positive in-group evaluation. In contrast, the more majority group members endorse Multiculturalism (or assimilationism), the less (or more) likely they are to identify with their ethnic group and to show negative out-group evaluation. Results from 4 studies (correlational and experimental) provide support for this hypothesis among Dutch and Turkish participants living in the Netherlands.

  • Multiculturalism within individuals: A review, critique, and agenda for future research
Journal of International Business Studies, 2019

    Abstract:

• the devil is in the details abstract versus concrete construals of Multiculturalism differentially impact intergroup relations
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2014
    Co-Authors: Kumar Yogeeswaran, Nilanjana Dasgupta
    Abstract:

Three experiments integrated several theories in psychology and sociology to identify the conditions under which Multiculturalism has positive versus negative effects on majority group members attitudes and behavioral intentions toward ethnic minorities. On the basis of social cognitive construal theories, we predicted and found that construing Multiculturalism in abstract terms by highlighting its broad goals reduced White Americans prejudice toward ethnic minorities relative to a control condition, whereas construing Multiculturalism in concrete terms by highlighting specific ways in which its goals can be achieved increased White Americans prejudice relative to the same control (Experiments 1 and 2). Using social identity threat research, we found that construing Multiculturalism in abstract terms decreased the extent to which diversity was seen as threatening national identity, whereas construing it in concrete terms increased the extent to which diversity was seen as threatening national identity; threat in turn fueled prejudice (Experiments 2 and 3). Perceivers political orientation moderated the effects of Multiculturalism construals on prejudicial attitudes and social distancing behavioral intentions (Experiment 3). Symbolic threat to national identity but not realistic threat to national resources mediated these effects. Collectively, these experiments demonstrate when Multiculturalism leads to positive versus negative intergroup outcomes, why, and how political orientation shapes prejudice and behavioral intentions toward ethnic minorities. • feminism versus Multiculturalism
    Columbia Law Review, 2001
    Co-Authors: Leti Volpp
    Abstract:

To posit feminism and Multiculturalism as oppositional is to assume that minority women are victims of their cultures. This assumption is achieved by a discursive strategy that constructs gender subordination as integral only to certain cultures. This essay traces the origins of the ubiquitous claim that minority and Third World cultures are more subordinating than culture in the West to the history of colonialism, the origins of liberalism, depictions of the feminist subject, and the use of binary logic. Pitting feminism against Multiculturalism has certain consequences: It obscures the influences that in fact shape cultural practices, hides the forces besides culture that affect women's lives, elides the way women exercise agency within patriarchy, and masks the level of violence within the United States. The piece concludes by suggesting a basis for a constructive dialogue beyond the discourse of feminism versus Multiculturalism.
