  • AN APPLICATION OF CONSTRUCTIVISM METHOD IN TEACHING READING (A Naturalistic Research at SMA Negeri 1 Wonogiri, 2014/2015)
    2017
    Co-Authors: Andi Harlinanto
    Abstract:

ABSTRACT Andi Harlinanto: “The Application of Constructivism Method on Teaching Reading” (A Naturalistic Study in SMA Negeri 1 Wonogiri in the Academic Year of 2014/2015)”. Thesis, English Education Departement, Graduate Program, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. 2016. The objectives of the Research is to describe the application of Constructivism Method in Teaching Reading, to analyse the effects of Constructivism Method in Teaching Reading and to figure out the effects of this method to increase the ability of the students constructing text and producing a new concept or meaning. The Researcher conducted his Research in SMA Negeri 1 Wonogiri, Central Java province from June 2014-April 2016. It’s qualitative Research in the form of Naturalistic study. The subjects of the Research were the teaching and learning activities of Reading in SMA Negeri 1 Wonogiri using Constructivism Method. The data of this thesis collected from several techniques including non-participant observation, in-depth interview, and document analysis. In analyzing the qualitative data, the writer conducted the constant comparative method for deriving the theory through: comparing incidents applicable to each category, integrating categories and their properties, delimiting the theory, and writing the theory. The result complied from the information collected shows as follows: firstly, Describing the application of Constructivism Method in the classroom. Secondly, this method has good effects to improve students’ language proficiency through understanding and constructing of the text. The improvements can be identified in the improvement of students’ participation in reading, speaking and writing class. The Research findings of this study implied that the application of Constructivism Method in Teaching Reading improves students’ English competences especially in reading skill. Therefore teachers need to develop their understanding, profession competence, their knowledge and skill to be able to conduct and create effective language classroom and at the same time to teach student reading particularly. • The Social Construction of Ability and Disability II. Optimal and At-Risk Lessons in a Bilingual Special Education Classroom
    Journal of learning disabilities, 1995
    Co-Authors: Nadeen T. Ruiz
    Abstract:

Bilingual students' language and literacy skills were compared across three classroom events in a special day classroom for students with language learning disabilities. Events ranged from the teacher-structured, formal class openings to the informal, peer-structured sociodramatic play. Results showed that certain contextual features were associated with enhanced student performance, whereas others were associated with communicative breakdowns and problems with literacy tasks. This ethnographic study, in conjunction with other Naturalistic Research on bilingual special education classrooms, undergirds the Optimal Learning Environment (OLE) Project by identifying effective instructional contexts for bilingual students identified as having language learning disabilities.

  • Establishing the Research Foundations for Successful Client-Server Computing: What Naturalistic Studies Could Contribute
    The Qualitative Report, 2000
    Co-Authors: Patricia Y. Logan, Charles M. Lutz
    Abstract:

What is the nature of the process of implementing a new technology? How should the dynamics of implementing a new technology be studied? What Research methods are best-suited to the study of complex issues of social and organizational impacts arising from the implementation of a new technology? Clientserver computing represents a significant new technology that has not been a focus of Research investigations. As companies pursue client-server technology as a replacement for legacy computing systems, there is a need to provide practitioners with grounded Research that discover patterns of organizational and social dynamics that influence the successful outcome of a transition to this new technology. This article suggests that Naturalistic Research studies can formulate realistic business foundations for the successful implementation of client-server computing. This article is available in The Qualitative Report: http://nsuworks.nova.edu/tqr/vol4/iss1/2 Establishing the Research Foundations for Successful Client-Server Computing: What Naturalistic Studies Could Contribute by Patricia Y. • Making space for community in super-productivist rural settings
    Journal of Rural Studies, 2019
Co-Authors: Michael Mackay, Harvey C. Perkins
    Abstract:

Abstract This paper contributes a perspective on an enduring debate in rural studies about the transformation of rural areas in developed market economies into more or less ‘productivist’ landscapes. We focus on the conceptual category of ‘super-productivism’ and its reference to distinct super-charged production zones that are fundamentally shaped by the practices of high input and yielding, highly technical, narrowly profit-orientated agri-businesses operating at regional, national and global scales. Our contribution to this debate is to argue that while super-productivism is a useful category for thinking about transitions in agricultural regions, under particular structural conditions, it is important not to lose sight of the fact that these highly intensive agri-landscapes are also home for their residents and recreational settings for local and neighbouring urban communities. Studying this aspect of super-productivism requires a relational perspective and a Naturalistic Research method. We illustrate this argument using a study of the Lower Waitaki Water Sports Park in the South Island of New Zealand.
