    Co-Authors: Barbara E. Smith

  • British Official Publications—2. Publication and distribution
    Government Publications Review, 2002
    Co-Authors: Barbara E. Smith
    Abstract:

An examination of the means by which British Official Publications are published and made available for distribution becomes to a great extent a study of Her Majesty's Stationery Office. And, in fact, Official publishing and H.M.S.O. often tend to blur into a kind of synonymous term for the uninitiated, who may then suppose that H.M.S.O. is indeed the publisher for all British Official papers. It is important, therefore, to state clearly that while H.M.S.O. is understood to be the primary Official publisher, there is a further area of government publishing being done within the Government Departments. In some instances, notably the Patent Office and the Ordnance Survey, Departments may issue more titles than H.M.S.O. in any given year. And, in the case of retrospective publishing, one must look to the commercial book-publishing world as well for a complete picture of Official publishing.
