    Abstract:

    In this study, microwave heating was employed for controlling Oryzaephilus surinamensis adult beetles infesting stored Iranian dried figs. The dried fig samples were artificially infested with O. surinamensis and then heated in a microwave oven (2,450 MHz) at power outputs of 450, 720, and 900 W for 20, 30, 40, and 50 s. Changes in the color of the samples after these microwave applications were evaluated for lightness (ΔL*), redness (Δa*), and yellowness (Δb*) using an image processing technique. Both parameters of microwave power and exposure time had significant effects on beetle mortality ( P < 0.01). A direct positive relationship was found between the mortality rate and microwave power. Complete mortality was achieved at 900 W and for 50 s. The color parameters of the dried fig samples did not change significantly. These results indicate that microwave irradiation can be introduced as an appropriate alternative to chemical fumigants without affecting product quality.

    Abstract:

    Ozone is a powerful oxidant which can be used for killing insects and microorganisms. In this study, ozone was applied in the gaseous form to control two species of pests in stored dried figs. The samples of figs (50 g each) were infested with adults of Oryzaephilus surinamensis L. and larvae of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller and were subjected to different combinations of ozone concentrations (2, 3, and 5 ppm) and exposure times (15, 30, 45, 60, and 90 min). Changes in organoleptic properties (color, sweetness, firmness, aroma, and overall acceptability) during ozonation were studied. The results showed that the mortality rate increased with an increase in ozone concentration and exposure time. The total mortality of both pests was achieved at an ozone concentration of 5 ppm and exposure time of 90 min. Sensory evaluation showed that ozone only had a negligible effect on aroma. Therefore, the usage of ozone is recommended during the postharvest process instead of other chemical fumigants, such as methyl bromide and phosphine.

    Abstract:

    The aims of this work were to evaluate antifeedant, horizontal transfer and repellent activities of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), free and microencapsulated, at different doses against Oryzaephilus surinamensis and Tribolium castaneum on peanut kernels. In general, negative values for the percentage feeding deterrence index (FDI) were found for Oryzaephilus surinamensis in the presence of these chemical treatments, suggesting a phagostimulant activity. In addition, untreated individuals died within 20 days of coming into contact with insects previously exposed to both antioxidants (BHA and BHT) and formulations (F- BHA and F-BHT), regardless of the dose, while the insects in the controls died after this time. Since this work revealed evidence for the transfer of both free and microencapsulated antioxidants from treated to untreated individuals, we can confirm that horizontal transfer of these compounds takes place between treated and untreated insects. The evaluated compounds showed no repellent activity against O. surinamensis, which continued unaffected with its life cycle on both treated and untreated peanuts. On the other hand, Tribolium castaneum exhibited high FDI values, especially for the formulations, with mean values of 0.68 and 0.91 for F-BHA and F-BHT, respectively. No horizontal transfer was observed for this insect, but repellency was higher than 80% for free and encapsulated BHT. We can conclude that the mechanism of insecticidal action of antioxidants and their formulations was dependent on the type of insect evaluated. The insecticidal effect on Oryzaephilus surinamensis could have been due to the direct intake of the chemical compounds added, whereas the negative effect on Tribolium castaneum could have been caused by starvation.Fil: García, Daiana.     Abstract:

    Saw-toothed grain beetle, flat grain beetle and red flour beetle are major among stored grain insect population. These insect destroy at least 15% of the food produced in only India as they feed almost entirely on the germ of the grain reducing its quality. For selection of control measure advantages, disadvantages and safety towards grain quality must be the first consideration. Plants are composed of many constituents some of them are insecticidal, attractants, repellent, anti-feedants, hormone mimics and hormone antagonist. Repellent behavior is one of the important measures as it does not kill the insect but protect the grain from infestation. Here some plant extract Punica gronatum, Chenopodium album, Vitex negundo and Maytenus emarginata and their combinations were applied to test insect Oryzaephilus surinamensis at the dose of 1, 2.5 and 5ml /100 gms of cashew nuts to control them through repellent behavior.

    Abstract:

    The date palm, Phoenix dactylifera (L.) fruit is a very important source of nutrients and cash crop of Sindh, Pakistan because of ideal climatic conditions for cultivation. The commercially important varieties are grown namely; Kupro, Karbalian, Aseel, Fasly and Dadhi. The research study was carried out under laboratory conditions from August, 2015 to April, 2016. During storage process these varieties were infested by saw toothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L). The maximum survival rate was recorded 88% on Kupro and lowest 46.51% on Dadhi varieties. The study revealed that Kupro and Karbalian semi-dry varieties were more attractive to pest as compared to Aseel and Dadhi dry, the reason might be because of attraction was high sugar and moisture contents.

    Abstract:

    The date palm fruit is a very important source of nutrients and cash crop of Sindh, Pakistan because of ideal climatic conditions for cultivation. The commercially important varieties are grown namely; Kupro, Karbalian, Aseel, Fasly and Dadhi and research study was carried out under laboratory conditions from August, 2015 to April, 2016 in relation to sugar, moisture and ash contents. The highest sugar content and moisture observed in Kupro was 85.90% and 23% whereas; lowest was 65.50% and 10% in Aseel and Dadhi dry varieties. During storage process these varieties were infested by Saw tooth grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.,). The maximum mean infestation was recorded 40.42% on Kupro and minimum 22.85% on Aseel and Dadhi (dry dates). The mean infestation is positively correlated with sugar and moisture content. The study revealed that Kupro and Karbalian semi-dry varieties were more attractive to pest as compared to Aseel and Dadhi dry, the reason might be because of attraction toward high sugar and moisture contents.
