In this article, I elaborate on Caillois' argument by suggesting that the professional context of electronic sports (e-Sports) rationalises play by turning player psychology towards the pursuit of extrinsic rewards. This is evidenced in the instrumental decision-making that accompanies competitive gameplay as well as the 'survival' strategies that e-Sports players deploy to endure its precarious working environment(s). In both cases, play is treated as work and has problematic psychological and sociological implications as a result. Jung, Tomohiko UranoAbstract:Activation of the p53 tumour suppressor protein can lead to cell-cycle arrest or apoptosis. p53 function is controlled by the mdm2 oncogene product, which targets p53 for proteasomal degradation. In this report we demonstrate that Mdm2 induces translation of the p53 mRNA from two alternative initiation sites, giving full-length p53 and another protein with a relative molecular mass (M(r)) of approximately 47K; we designate this protein as p53/47. This translation induction requires Mdm2 to interact directly with the nascent p53 polypeptide. The alternatively translated p53/47 does not contain the Mdm2-binding site and it lacks the most amino-terminal transcriptional-activation domain of p53. Increased expression of p53/47 stabilizes p53 in the presence of Mdm2, and alters the expression levels of p53-induced gene products. These results show how the interaction of Mdm2 with p53 leads to a change in the ratio of full-length p53 to p53/47 by inducing translation of both p53 proteins and the subsequent selective degradation of full-length p53. Thus, Mdm2 controls the expression levels of p53 through a dual mechanism that involves induction of synthesis and targeting for degradation.

Phytoremediation can abbreviate the long carryover effect. This research was carried out from September 2006 to February 2007, under green house conditions, in Rio Verde, Goias, Brazil, to study the influence of Eleusine coracana population density on phytoremediation of soil contaminated with picloram. The treatments consisted of the combination of four Eleusine coracana population densities (0, 7, 14 and 21 plants per pot, corresponding to 0, 172, 344 and 516 plants m-2, respectively) and three picloram rates (0, 80 and 160 g ha-1 - applied directly to the pots, simulating soil contamination levels). After growing the phytoremediation species on substrate during 100 days, soybean was sown as a bioindicator species in the same pot. E. coracana was able to remediate soils contaminanted with picloram. At densities above 172 plants m-2, there was no further reduction of the carryover effect to soybean sown in succession.

The experiment was carried out at a greenhouse from September 2006 to February 2007, in 12 treatments combining four Eleusine coracana cultivation periods ((0, 60, 80 and 100 days) and three picloram rates (0, 80 and 160 g ha-1), arranged in a completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme 4 x 3, with four replicates and Eutroferric Red Latosol samples used as growth substrate. The bioindicators tomato (cultivar Santa Clara) and soybean (cultivar Monsoy 6101) were sowed at the end of the time established for the phytoremediation species to act. The bioindicators showed high sensitivity to picloram on soil, rendering impracticable the cultivation of those crops in areas contaminated with this herbicide without remediation. Prior cultivation of four Eleusine coracana for 60 days provided a satisfactory initial growth of soybean and tomato cultivated in soil that had previously received the application of up to 160 g ha-1 picloram; however; these bioindicators showed visible symptoms of herbicide intoxication.

The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions with samples of Oxisol. The treatments consisted of the combination of four daily levels of water replacement (80, 90, 100 and 110% of evaporated water) and three picloram rates (0, 80 and 160 g ha-1), arranged in a completely randomized design, in a factorial scheme 4 x 3, with four replications. The phytoremediation specie was sowed 48 h after applying the herbicide. At 90 days post emergence, the plants were desiccated and cut and the bioindicator specie (soybean - Monsoy 6101 cultivar) was sowed. The results indicated that the highest evaporated water replacemente depth contributes to the remediation of soil contaminated with picloram, by using Eleusine coracana plants. This phytoremediation improvement only is significant when soil contamination is not over 80 g ha-1.

Ciencia Rural, 2003Co-Authors: L H P Kiill, João Gomes Da CostaAbstract:Aspects of pollination biology and reproductive system of Annona squamosa L. were studied in Petrolina-PE, Northeastern Brazil, from June 1999 to February 2000, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The flowers of A. squamosa are hermaphrodite, axillary, with fleshy calyx and corolla forming a floral camera which serves as a shelter, food source and mating place for visitors. The flowers also show light color petals, produce strong and bad odors. The anthesis takes place around 5:00 p.m., the flowers last for approximately two days, and show female phase in the first twenty hours and male phase in the following twenty hours, characterizing dichogamy. Carpophilus hemipterus, Carpophilus sp and Haptoncus ochraceus (Nitidulidae) are the main flower visitors and according to frequency, time and behavior, are considered pollinators of this species. The species is self-compatible, however the germination tests indicated that seeds from cross-pollination show higher viability than seeds from geitonogamy.

As flores de A. squamosa são hermafroditas, axilares, com cálice e corola carnosos, formando uma câmara floral, que funciona como abrigo, fonte alimentar e/ou local de acasalamento para os visitantes florais. As flores apresentam características da síndrome de cantarofilia, tais como pétalas carnosas, de coloração clara e emissão de odores fortes e desagradáveis. A antese é crepuscular, iniciando por volta das 17 horas e a duração das flores é de aproximadamente dois dias. As flores se apresentam em fase feminina nas primeiras 20 horas e em fase masculina nas 20 horas seguintes, caracterizando a dicogamia. Carpophilus hemipterus, Carpophilus sp e Haptoncus ochraceus (Nitidulidae) são os principais visitantes, sendo considerados como polinizadores desta anonácea.
