  • La Perla – 100 years of informal architecture in San Juan, Puerto Rico
    Planning Perspectives, 2015
    Co-Authors: Florian Urban
    Abstract:

La Perla, Puerto Rico's most famous informal settlement, developed since the early 1900s outside the fortifications of San Juan's colonial Old Town, the country's main tourist attraction. In the mid-twentieth century, La Perla was a symbol of the poverty and deprivation that development and scientifically informed planning attempted to remove. Since the 1970s, La Perla has been a subject of various improvement plans by the local authority with varying degrees of inhabitant participation. Thus, La Perla is connected with the great hopes and fears of the twentieth century: the promise of modernization and progress and the ensuing disappointments, the limitations of top-down decision-making and expert planning, the distress of poverty and marginalization, the opportunities of self-organization and informality, and the threat of forced relocation imposed by gentrification cycles. Based on previously unpublished archival materials, this article presents an architectural and planning history of La Perla. It com...

  • Phenology of Adult Stoneflies (Plecoptera) of the Curone Stream (Northern Apennines, Italy)
    Journal of Freshwater Ecology, 2009
Co-Authors: Stefano Fenoglio, Manuel Jesús López-rodríguez, José Manuel Tierno De Figueroa
    Abstract:

ABSTRACT We studied the flight periods of 16 stonefly species from Curone stream (northern Apennines, Italy) and grouped them into four categories according to their flight periods—autumnal (Protonemura salfii and Leuctra major,) autumnal-winter (Leuctra fusca and Leuctra hexacantha,) winter-spring (Leuctra hippopus and Leuctra subalpina,) and spring (Besdolus ravizzarum, IsoPerla grammatica, Perla grandis, Perla marginata, Brachyptera risi, Amphinemura sulcicollis, Protonemura intricata, Nemoura hesperiae, Capnioneura nemuroides, and Leuctra handlirschi; probably D. cephalotes can also be added to this category, although no adults were observed). Among the adults, L. fusca was the most abundant species, while C. nemuroides was the rarest. There was partial temporal segregation in the flight periods. In general, the male flight period, at least in some species, occurred slightly in advance of the female flight period.

  • A comparison between local emergence patterns of Perla grandis and Perla marginata (Plecoptera, Perlidae)
    Hydrobiologia, 2008
Co-Authors: Stefano Fenoglio, Manuel Jesús López-rodríguez, José Manuel Tierno De Figueroa, Giorgio Malacarne
    Abstract:

In this study we investigated the emergence patterns of two Systellognatha stoneflies: Perla marginata and P. grandis (Plecoptera: Perlidae) in a first order stream of the Northern Apennines (NW Italy). Exuviae of both species were collected in a selected area of the Curone creek by hand-picking, measuring the distance between river edge and substrate typology. Exuviae were found on different substrate types near the shoreline: stones in the stream bank were mainly used by both species, and gravel beach was the least-utilised substrate. No evident differences were found between the species in the typology and colour of emergence substrates. Interestingly, we found that P. grandis exuviae were significantly located at greater horizontal and vertical distances from the water edge than P. marginata ones. We discuss these findings on the basis of ecological and behavioural considerations.

  • Trophic Behavior of Two Perlidae Species (Insecta, Plecoptera) in a River in Southern Spain
    International Review of Hydrobiology, 2008
Co-Authors: Stefano Fenoglio, Manuel Jesús López-rodríguez, José Manuel Tierno De Figueroa
    Abstract:

Two Perlidae species, Dinocras cephalotes and Perla bipunctata, were studied in a river in Spain with the objectives of: a) describing their diets; b) detecting differences between size classes; c) analyzing niche breadth; and d) assessing the degree of niche overlap between both species and size classes. Dinocras cephalotes and Perla bipunctata nymphs fed mainly on Baetidae and immature Chironomidae. We did not detect significant differences in the quantity of ingested detritus, algae, and leaf pieces. Niche breadth was very low, although both species presented a high niche overlap. P. bipunctata seems to select some prey items throughout its nymphal development, whereas D. cephalotes augments its diet with other prey items as it grows. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. • Feeding of Perla grandis nymphs (Plecoptera: Perlidae) in an Apennine first order stream (Rio Berga, NW Italy)
Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N.S.), 2007
Co-Authors: Stefano Fenoglio, Massimo Pessino, Giorgio Malacarne
    Abstract:

Feeding habits of Perla grandis (Rambur) nymphs have been investigated in the Rio Berga, an Apenninic stream of Northwestern Italy. In this study, we analysed gut contents of 50 nymphs of this species, with the aim to investigate feeding preferences. Nymphs were collected from a single riffl e, of which benthic coenosis was also determined. We detected a change in the diet during ontogenesis, with small instars feeding mainly on detritus and large instars strictly carnivorous. We also detected the existence of an evident trophic selection: diet was almost entirely dominated by Chironomidae, independently from their availability on the substratum. This fi nding is discussed on the basis of ecological and ethological considerations.

  • The use of color in the dwellings of the informal settlement “la Perla” in san juan, puerto rico
    2013
    Co-Authors: Jean M. Caldieron
    Abstract:

This paper aims to explore the importance of color in a particular self-built informal settlement called La Perla in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The neighborhood is located next to the historic attractions of this important tourist island, but is not incorporated within the tourism industry even though its vernacular architecture may have strong appeal among tourists. The artistic use of color by its inhabitants makes La Perla an area with high tourism potential. The objective of this research is to present partial results of a color survey in the settlement and to understand what are the main colors used in the facades of La Perla. Photographs of the facades of the dwellings were analyzed using image color summarizer software and the main colors of the facades were calculated. The results show how La Perla is very colorful and also the important use of bright colors. Future research is necessary to complement this pilot study and to understand also the use of colors in the public areas.

  • Residential Satisfaction in La Perla Informal Neighborhood, San Juan, Puerto Rico
    2011
    Co-Authors: Jean M. Caldieron
    Abstract:

Residential satisfaction is an important element measuring the quality of life of individuals. This paper reports on the findings of residential satisfaction in the self-built informal neighborhood of La Perla. The settlement is located adjacent to the colonial center of the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Separated by a defensive colonial wall, La Perla is not only physically isolated but also socially segregated from the city of San Juan despite more than 90 years of co-existence. Although urban decay has contributed to La Perla’s reputation, future development plans and a recent drug bust are affecting the future of the community. However, the strong emotional links between the residents and their neighborhood may preserve La Perla as an integral part of San Juan. For this research, more than 100 householder surveys were held in the neighborhood analyzing the conditions of the dwellings, the housing typology, and the householders’ satisfaction. Even though La Perla is a shantytown with strong economic and social problems, the surveys found a very high level of residential satisfaction within the community. This paper is part of a more extensive study of the neighborhood. The final objective is to help organize a basis of knowledge for the formulation of social programs that will complement proposed urban design interventions. The research is a collaboration of Florida Atlantic University, the community of La Perla, and the local government of the city of San Juan. This research has been funded with the help of Florida Atlantic University and the Architectural Research Consortium grant.
