    A novel Group A rotavirus, first identified clinically in Racing, feral and fancy Pigeons in Western Australia, had spread throughout Australia by March 2017. In December 2016, the putative index case of rotavirus in Racing Pigeons in the state of Victoria was confirmed at a regional bird sale, with rapid spread to peri-urban Melbourne, the capital city. A survey sent to approximately 400 Victorian Pigeon fanciers identified eight (of 85 respondents) with a confirmed rotavirus infection in their loft(s). If a fancier had purchased live birds, either from the regional sale or from another source, there was a 13%-38% increased likelihood of the loft subsequently being confirmed rotavirus-positive. An increased loft-level risk of rotavirus was also positively associated with the number of neighbouring lofts within a 5-km radius of a home loft. It was concluded that rotavirus was primarily transmitted beyond the Victorian index case through the movement of live birds into a loft, either deliberately through bird purchase and/or inadvertently through the entry of Pigeons from neighbouring lofts. As Pigeon Racing inherently requires consistent contact between birds from different lofts, vaccination is recommended as a primary method of rotavirus control in this unique industry.

    Cases of vomiting and diarrhoea were reported in Racing Pigeons in Western Australia in May, 2016. Morbidity and mortality rates were high. Similar clinical disease was seen in Victoria in December and by early 2017 had been reported in all states except the Northern Territory, in different classes of domestic PigeonRacing, fancy and meat bird–and in a flock of feral Pigeons. Autopsy findings were frequently unremarkable; histological examination demonstrated significant hepatic necrosis as the major and consistent lesion, often with minimal inflammatory infiltration. Negative contrast tissue suspension and thin section transmission electron microscopy of liver demonstrated virus particles consistent with a member of the Reoviridae. Inoculation of trypsin-treated Vero, MDBK and MA-104 cell lines resulted in cytopathic changes at two days after infection. Next generation sequencing was undertaken using fresh liver samples and a previously undescribed group A rotavirus (genotype G18P[17]) of avian origin was identified and the virus was isolated in several cell lines. A q-RT-PCR assay was developed and used to screen a wider range of samples, including recovered birds. Episodes of disease have continued to occur and to reoccur in previously recovered lofts, with variable virulence reported. This is the first report of a rotavirus associated with hepatic necrosis in any avian species.

    Abstract The history and geography of sports in nineteenth- and twentieth-century France have been studied intensively during the last thirty years but one sport – that of Pigeon Racing – has received virtually no attention. This paper ventures into a largely unexplored field. After describing briefly the general history of homing Pigeons and the specific geography of Pigeon Racing clubs in France in 1890, it focuses on the departement of Pas-de-Calais in northern France. Pas-de-Calais and the adjacent departement of Nord together accounted for more than half of the just over 400 Pigeon Racing clubs identified in France in 1890. Within the context of the rapid development between 1870 and 1914 of its population, society and economy (and especially its coalmining industry), Pas-de-Calais saw the creation of more than one thousand recreational societies, especially sports clubs, among them numerous Pigeon Racing clubs. Three hundred Pigeon Racing clubs in one of the departement's six arrondissements – that of Bethune – are examined closely from surviving but fragmentary sources. The aims, names, membership and Racing activities of these societies are studied from their unpublished records. They are shown to have developed in close association with the growth of coalmining communities and in particular with the role of Belgian immigrants in those communities.

    Pigeon Racing is a popular sport worldwide. Pigeons are under continuous selection to improve speed, spatial orientation, and endurance during long flights. However, numerous genetic and non-genetic factors affect survivability and homing ability, making such traits difficult for breeders to control. Polymorphisms in the lactate dehydrogenase A gene (LDHA) likely affects Pigeon Racing and homing abilities, due to its role in physical and mental performance. Additionally, the adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide 1 gene (ADCYAP1) has been associated with physiological and behavioral shifts that occur during avian migration. In this study, we examined the association between LDHA and ADCYAP1 genotypes with Pigeon survivability during Racing competitions. Survivability was evaluated through the estimated breeding value (EBV) of each individual’s total race distances during its athletic life. ADCYAP1 was not polymorphic among our samples, while LDHA genotypes were significantly associated with deviated EBV values of longer total race distance; individuals carrying the S+ genotype had higher EBV (i.e., greater survivability). Thus, the LDHA locus might be useful for marker-assisted selection, empowering breeders and trainers to maximize Pigeon quality. Moreover, data obtained from breeding will also improve our understanding of the genetic mechanism underlying navigation and flight for wild migrating bird species.

    Pigeons (Columba livia) have long history of selective breeding for many purposes; one of them is Pigeon Racing using their homing ability. A total of 221 Pigeon samples were sequenced for lactate dehydrogenase-A gene (LDHA) including part of exon 5 and part of exon 6 and intervening intron 5. Six polymorphic sites were identified in intron 5; one indel and five SNPs. Statistical significant differences in allele frequencies were observed for 595bp and 600bp alleles between homing and non-homing groups in both Japanese and Egyptian Pigeons.     This study aims to 1) describe the different characteristics of Racing Pigeons and doves male high (eye color, fur color, head shape, and the shape of the body). 2) identifying differences in the characteristics of high male Pigeons and Racing Pigeons male). The research was conducted in December 2015 in captivity and Pigeon Racing Pigeons high on the road abdinegara number 43 Sumur Batu, Teluk Betung and Pagar Alam road number 49, Tanjung Karang Barat, Bandar Lampung. This study used survey method with the observation of qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The results showed qualitative characteristics at high male Pigeons dominated by the color of the yellow, the color of feathers tritis, rounded head shape and body shape banana. As for the male Pigeon Racing is dominated by the color of the iris yellow, Prumpung coat color, head shape turtledove, and body shape banana. High Pigeon males have an average length of beak 2,53 ± 0,50  cm longer and shorter body weight ie 331,32 ± 15,36 gr compared to males Racing Pigeons which have a longer half-life 2.46 ± 0,50 cm and weight 444,03 ± 55,31 gr and wide flutter higher saayap namely 28,93 ± 1,08 cm compared to the Racing Pigeons 25.16 ± 0,79 cm and length leg lower 8,46 ± 1,30 cm than Racing Pigeons cm 14.93 ± 0,86 cm.
