Eggs of this pyralid were glued on rectangular cardboard and presented to nymphs of P. maculiventris as food. The pentatomid successfully reached adult stage when feeding on unparasitised eggs, indicating that flour moth eggs can be used as a factitious food for rearing this predator. Pentatomid nymphs that received only parasitised eggs died before reaching fourth instar. In choice tests, P. maculiventris showed a preference for preying on unparasitised eggs of E. kuehniella rather than those containing pupae of T. brassicae. These results show that it is possible to combine the use of P. maculiventris with releases of T. brassicae in control programs of lepidopteran pests.

2000Co-Authors: J Mohaghegh, P De Clercq, Luc TirryAbstract:Susceptibility of Podisus maculiventris to the insect growth regulator teflubenzuron, the carbamate methomyl, the pyrethroid deltamethrin, and the bioinsecticide Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Bactospeine) was evaluated in the laboratory. Newly-moulted fourth instars and seven-day-old female adults were exposed to formulated materials of each compound via ingestion for 48 h. Teflubenzuron was highly toxic to fourth instars (LC 50 = 14.7 mg a.i. l -1 ) of the predator, but proved to be harmless to female adults. Both fourth instars and females suffered the highest mortality when they were exposed to methomyl (LC 50 = 5.4 and 10.6 mg a.i. l -1 , respectively). Deltamethrin was relatively safe for the predator in either stage; however, fourth instars were more tolerant to the pyrethroid than females (LC 50 = 158.8 and 43.4 mg a.i. l -1 , respectively). 1998Co-Authors: P De Clercq, M Vandewalle, Luc TirryAbstract:Effects of inbreeding on the development and reproduction of the predatory pentatomid Podisus maculiventris were assessed throughout 30 generations following introduction in the laboratory. Developmental and reproductive fitness of two mildly inbred lines did not differ dramatically from that of a reference population. In most generations, egg weight, egg hatch and developmental rate of nymphs were greater in the reference strain than in both inbred strains, but fecundity and longevity did not differ among strains. In the 30th generation, fecundity of all strains had dropped to about half of that observed in the 15th generation, which was presumably related to non-genetic factors. There were consistent differences among strains for adult body weight and size, indicating heritable variation. A positive relationship between weight at day 14 and humeral width of P. maculiventris females was found, but neither of these parameters was associated with total fecundity. In the 30th generation, predators from both inbred lines had generally similar predation capacities to those from the reference population. No significant relationship could be detected between body weights and predation rates of either nymphs or adults. The use of inbreeding to minimize selective adaptation during rearing or to select for favourable traits in P. maculiventris is discussed.

1996Co-Authors: A Cock, Luc Tirry, P De Clercq, Danny DegheeleAbstract:Susceptibility of the predatory pentatomid the spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Say), to diafenthiuron and imidacloprid was investigated in the laboratory. Adults and 5th-instar nymphs were exposed to formulated materials of each compound by direct topical exposure, residual contact, and ingestion. The effects of sublethal doses were also evaluated. Diafenthiuron was practically nontoxic to P. maculiventris when applied topically. However, both ingestion and residual contact caused severe mortality. In general, adults were more sensitive to diafenthiuron than 5th-instar nymphs. For imidacloprid, toxicity decreased in order of topical exposure > ingestion > residual contact. Treatment with a sublethal concentration of diafenthiuron caused a high mortality rate during the 2 wk of treatment. Oviposition and egg hatch were not affected when treating female adults. Our data suggest that the use of these products, in combination with P. maculiventris in an integrated management program, should be carefully evaluated.

2001Co-Authors: De ClercqAbstract:Predation abilities of Podisus maculiventris and Podisus nigrispinus on caterpillars of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hubner), were compared at three different temperatures (18, 23 and 27°C) by performing functional response tests. In both species, predation capacity was a function of temperature and prey density: more prey were captured as temperature and number of prey offered increased. Results indicated that type II and III functional responses provided the best fit to the data obtained for P. nigrispinus at 18 and 23°C, and at 27°C, respectively. However, the data for P. maculiventris showed a better fit to type II at 18°C and to type III at higher temperatures. In both pentatomids the handling time decreased with increasing temperature. At higher temperatures, P. nigrispinus demonstrated greater predation rates than P. maculiventris. The implications of these findings for the control of caterpillar pests in glasshouses are discussed.

Insecticides that are effective to this pest and selective to predator stinkbugs are required for the integrated management of S. exigua.MethodsThe toxicity of four commercial insecticide formulations azadirachtin + pyrethrin, spinosad, pyrethrin and chlorantraniliprole was tested on the target pest and their side effect were evaluated on the spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) through different bioassays.ResultsSpinosad and chlorantraniliprole were more toxic to S. exigua than to the predator P. maculiventris but opposite results were obtained for pyrethrin and azadirachtin + pyrethrin in contact toxicity bioassay. Chlorantraniliprole was the most toxic to S. exigua in oral toxicity bioassay, followed by spinosad, pyrethrin and azadirachtin + pyrethrin. Spinosad in oral toxicity bioassay was the most toxic to P. maculiventris, followed by pyrethrin, azadirachtin + pyrethrin and chlorantraniliprole. Spinosad caused irritability to the predator while pyrethrin to the pest. The insecticide repellency was not observed over the tested insect species. The synthetic insecticide chlorantraniliprole was less toxic than the natural pyrethrin, azadirachtin + pyrethrin and spinosad to the predator.ConclusionsThis work provides useful information on the combination of commercial insecticides with the predator P. maculiventris to controlling S. exigua in integrated pest management (IPM) programs.
