    Abstract:

    The article develops the concept of "Political judgement" - a new, affirmative understanding of the phenomena which are criticized as "Political Correctness" by both right-wing and liberal commentators. To that end, it takes the right's claims, that "Political Correctness" is slave morality in Nietzsche's sense seriously and proposes a systematic reading of a right-nietzschean position. Connecting current "Political-Correctness"-critique and Nietzsche in this way allows for a deeper understanding of the right-wing rationality and the affective energy underlying the critique. Through contrasting this right-nietzschean reading with its systematic opposite, a left-nietzschean position, the article shows that the essence of politics is to redesign norms which distribute privilege. What is critically labelled "Political Correctness" is, thus, better captured by the notion of "Political judgment", because - given an interest in emancipation - such politics should not be demonized when they limit the freedom provided by undeserved privileges

    Rechte Intellektuelle berufen sich oft auf Nietzsches Konzept der Sklavenmoral, um damit ihre Kritik an 'Political Correctness' zu untermauern. Diese Verschaltung von Nietzsches Sklavenmoral und 'PC'-Kritik ist zutreffend, wie die systematische Analyse ihrer gemeinsamen Elemente zeigt, die zu einer Neubeschreibung von 'PC'-Kritik als Privilegienverteidigung führt. Im Gegensatz zur rechtsnietzscheanischen 'PC'-Kritik zeigt der linksnietzscheanische Begriff des privilegienkritischen 'politischen Urteilens', dass Politik ein Kampf um Macht und Ansprüche ist, wobei der politische Raum und seine Diskurse immer verregelt und ein Verteilungssystem für Ressourcen und Privilegien sind. Deshalb ist es für eine emanzipatorische Position ange-bracht, die etablierten Normen kritisch zu hinterfragen und politische Projekte, die sie emanzipativ umschreiben wollen, zu unterstützen. Weil 'PC' als emanzipatives politisches Urteilen Privilegien abbaut, ist es kein zu vermeidender Nebeneffekt, sondern ihr vernünftiger Kern, wenn Privilegierte davon eingeschränkt werden. Der Linksnietzscheanismus hilft, nicht von rechter Aggression überrascht zu werden und ihr entsprechend kämpferisch durch strikte Normsetzung zu begegnen.Right-wing intellectuals often invoke Nietzsche's concept of slave morality to underpin their criticism of 'Political Correctness' ('PC'). This interconnection of Nietzsche's slave morality and 'PC' criticism is correct, as a systematic analysis of their common elements shows, which leads to a new description of 'PC' criticism as a defense of privilege. In contrast to the right-wing Nietzschean 'PC' critique, the left-wing Nietzschean concept of a privilege-critical ‘Political judgement' understands politics as a struggle for power, in which the space of the Political and related discourses are always already regulated and determine the conditions under which resources and privileges are distributed. Therefore, it is appropriate for an emancipatory position to critically question the established norms and to support Political projects that aim to rewrite them. Because 'PC', as emancipative Political judgement, dismantles privileges, its restricting of the privileged is not a side effect to be avoided but one of its reasonable core effects. Left-wing Nietzscheanism helps to avoid being surprised by right-wing aggression and to counter it vigorously by setting strict Political norms

    Science is hardly unique in relying on peer review to determine merit and success. But for science, the reliance on peers to referee both submissions for publication and applications for grants involves greater dangers than in some other disciplines. It brings the triple risk of conformity, cronyism and plagiarism, which together can smother innovation. At a broader level, there is a tendency for researchers to fall in line with a particular point of view, especially in the more Politically charged branches of science such as ecology or climatology. Those who oppose the prevailing orthodoxy risk being branded ‘flat earthers’ and cast into a wilderness where funding and publications are hard to obtain. According to Bruce Beutler, professor of immunology at the Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, CA, USA), peer pressure in its various forms is a particular problem for science. “It is not unique to research, but in science it goes very much against the grain of what's trying to be accomplished,” he said. Yet scientists themselves must take some of the blame for perpetuating a system that can stifle original thinking, Beutler contends. “Scientists like to present an image to the outside world as being very iconoclastic and sceptical. Yet they have a complete conformity of opinion on certain things, and they do victimize people who differ from them.” By way of example, Beutler cited the atmosphere surrounding the recent US presidential election, in which any scientist who argued in favour of George W. Bush attracted severe ridicule. More worryingly though, such Political Correctness can distort research, with consequences not just for scientific direction but also for public matters such as health policy. “I think the best example of conformity of science is the influenza vaccine,” said Tom Jefferson, an independent researcher in the UK who specializes in immunology. …

  • Four Principles of Political Correctness

    This paper takes a psychoanalytic view of Political Correctness. PC is a consequence of a deep cultural transformation. Because of the necessity for the infant of maternal love, the mother is the most powerful force in the psyche. In traditional culture, the father is seen as having earned mother’s love, which makes him worthy of emulation. In the new culture, he Is seen as having stolen mother’s love, and is to be hated for his theft. Those from who he is seen as having stolen her love, called the marginalized, such as racial and sexual minorities, are to be loved in compensation. This whole project is based on the fiction that the father gained his love through theft, and therefore cannot be renewed by contact with reality. It must therefore be dramatized continuously. All this can be represented as four principles of Political Correctness: (1) Hate the father, (2) Love those from whom he has stolen love, (3) Keep the drama moving, and (4) Invoke the love and power of mother.

    Political Correctness represents the attempt to eliminate the father, often referred to as the patriarch, who is seen as having deprived us of our connection to mother and all of her goodness. But what has really deprived us of our connection to mother’s goodness is not the father, but reality itself. Political Correctness therefore represents an attempt to destroy reality. This attempt to destroy the father as the representation of reality represents a different way of constructing meaning than we have in the traditional Oedipal arrangement. But the traditional arrangement made organization possible, whereas anti-paternal psychology undertakes to destroy organization. When organizations give themselves to Political Correctness they therefore reorganize themselves toward self-destruction. I call that process organizational nihilism.

    Political Correctness represents a regression in university functioning in which paternal influences are repudiated and a biparental model of authority is replaced by one revolving around a primordial conception of the mother. Paternal influences are those that represent the engagement with external reality, and regression to the primordial mother is therefore a rejection of external reality. Aspects of university functioning that are explained by this model include the inversion of valuation, the assault against white males, the subordination of rationality in decision making, the balkanization of the university, the drive to the extreme, and the anomaly of female power.

    All of language is a combination of sounds and words that translate into concretizing abstract meaning. This is interpreted and results into action which can be violent or non violent. Proper language use can serve as a non violent way of resolving differences. Problems arise when the linguistic constructs we use result into people thinking and acting in negative ways. This paper examines the concept of Political Correctness and how language should be used in order not to hurt, insult, reject, stereotype or show prejudice. It highlights Political Correctness in human relationships as it affects gender, race, sexual orientation, physical challenges, religion and culture. It acknowledges the importance of social interaction using language and points out the need to change wrong use of language through conscious effort. The paper draws from the position that language’s grammatical categories shape speaker’s ideas and actions. In discussing the concept of Political Correctness, the effect of Political incorrect use of language is shown in some historical occurrences in Northern Nigeria.
