Variety-specific responses of lettuce grown under the different-coloured shade nets on phytochemical quality after Postharvest Storage

Variety-specific responses were observed with respect to different coloured shade nets with regards to the accumulation of β-carotene, ascorbic acid, flavonoids (kaempferol, isorhamnetin, quercetin, myricetin, anthocyanin), and antioxidant activity at harvest. Growing var. Ashbrook under the pearl net improved the ascorbic acid and myricetin contents after Postharvest Storage. Var. Exbury (red) produced under the black net showed higher retention of ascorbic acid, and anthocyanin contents after Postharvest Storage. Spectral quality of photo-selective nets improves phytochemicals and aroma volatiles in coriander leaves (Coriandrum sativum L.) after Postharvest Storage

Jifon, Dharini SivakumarAbstract:Abstract The influence of spectral light on leaf quality and phytochemical contents and composition of aroma compounds in coriander leaves grown for fresh use under photo-selective nets; pearl net [40% shading; and 3.88 blue/red ratio; 0.21 red/far red ratio; photosynthetic radiation (PAR) 233.24 (μmol m − 2 s − 1 )] and red net [40% shading and 0.57 blue/red ratio; 0.85 red/far red ratio; 221.67 (μmol m − 2 s − 1 )] were compared with commercially used black nets [25% shading; 3.32 blue/red ratio 0.96 red/far red ratio; 365.26 (μmol m − 2 s − 1 )] at harvest and after 14 days of Storage. Black nets improved total phenols, flavonoid (quercetin) content, ascorbic acid content, and total antioxidant activity in coriander leaves at harvest. The characteristic leaf aroma compound decanal was higher in leaves from the plants under the red nets at harvest. However, coriander leaves from plants produced under red nets retained higher total phenols, flavonoids (quercetin) and antioxidant scavenging activity 14 days after Postharvest Storage (0 °C, 10 days, 95% RH and retailers' shelf at 15 °C for 4 days, 75% RH). But production under the pearl nets improved marketable yield reduced weight loss and retained overall quality, ascorbic acid content and aroma volatile compounds in fresh coriander leaves after Postharvest Storage. Pearl nets thus have the potential as a pre-harvest tool to enhance the moderate retention of phytochemicals and saleable weight for fresh coriander leaves during Postharvest Storage.

Bioactive Compounds and Fruit Quality of Green Sweet Pepper Grown under Different Colored Shade Netting during Postharvest Storage

Crosby, Dharini SivakumarAbstract:UNLABELLED In this study, influence of 3 types of photo-selective nets (pearl, red and yellow) and a standard black net on marketable yield, fruit quality and bioactive compounds after Postharvest Storage was investigated. Percentage marketable fruits were higher in green sweet peppers produced under the pearl nets. Fruits produced under the pearl nets showed higher fruit mass, firmness, chlorophyll content, ascorbic acid content, antioxidant scavenging activity after Postharvest Storage. Red/far red photon ratio under the pearl net could have improved the ascorbic acid content and the antioxidant scavenging activity in green peppers. Green sweet peppers grown under the pearl nets had higher hue values and maintained green color longer. Our results showed the impact of modified light quality on the bioactive compounds of green sweet pepper during Postharvest Storage. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Green sweet peppers are rich in phytochemicals. Marketability of green sweet peppers is affected partially due to ripening after Postharvest Storage and decay. Maintenance of green color, fruit mass, firmness, and nutritional composition are important parameters that attract consumers. This research shows the influence of light quality during production on the fruit quality parameters and bioactive compounds after Postharvest Storage.

Temperature influenced lipid peroxidation and deterioration in broccoli buds during Postharvest Storage

BarthAbstract:The effect of temperature on lipid peroxidation (LP) and deterioration of broccoli flower buds was investigated during Postharvest Storage. Fresh broccoli florets were packaged in microperforated polymeric film bags and stored under different temperatures (2, 13, and 23°C) over 144 h. LP was determined by measuring polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBA-RS) and lipoxygenase (LOX) activity. Changes in chlorophyll (Chl) levels, moisture and total soluble protein were used to assess broccoli deterioration. Increased temperature significantly accelerated total Chl (TChl) and soluble protein losses without reduction in moisture content. Temperature abuse at 13 and 23°C also resulted in reduced PUFA and LOX activity with increased TBA-RS values compared to those in the 2°C-treated buds over Storage. By the end of Storage. TChl, proteins. PUFA and LOX activity decreased by >70% in broccoli buds stored at 23°C. TBA-RS values increased 10-fold. Treatment of samples al 2°C maintained quality and presented changes in deterioration and LP parameters. The current investigation shows that increases in temperature accelerate the deterioration and LP of broccoli buds and further demonstrates that there is a relationship between LP and deterioration during Postharvest Storage of broccoli.

OPTIMAL Postharvest Storage PARAMETERS AND SHELF LIFE OF BABY SPINACH (SPINACIA OLERACEA L.)

Baby spinach (50 g) was sealed in three different polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) packaging materials: 30 m (PP), 35 m (PE) & 40 m (PE), and were stored in darkness for 3 and 9 days at 0 °C, 4 °C, 8 °C & 16 °C ( 1 °C). Total content of phenolics, soluble solids, nitrates, chlorophyll content, ascorbic acid & spinach color (CIEL*a*b*) were measured by standard methods after 3 and 9 days of Storage. Baby spinach stored at 0 ± 1 °C and 4 1 °C showed the best visual quality. Storage temperature had significant influence on spinach colour, but the influence of packaging was not so strong. The content of soluble solids, ascorbic acid and nitrates decreased during Storage. The highest amount of ascorbic acid was retained when baby spinach were stored in 40 m PE bags at 0 ± 1 °C. When baby spinach was stored at higher temperatures (4 °C, 8 °C & 16 °C), the decrease in the amount of ascorbic acid ranged from 55 % to 69 %. Baby spinach stored for 9 days at 0 °C & 4 °C showed high visual and biochemical quality. Higher amounts of soluble solids and ascorbic acid were found in spinach stored in 40 m PE bags. Thus, pulps of oranges and mandarins displayed higher hesperidin (HES), narirutin (NAR), total flavonoids (TF), total phenols (TP) and antioxidant activity (AAC) than their corresponding juices. Also, CC products presented higher bioactive compounds content than N ones. Bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds and AAC were higher in pulps of both oranges and mandarin than in their corresponding juices. Oranges (N and CC) pulps and juices presented higher bioaccessibilities than mandarin ones. The Postharvest Storage of mandarin at 12 °C during 5 weeks not only produced a significant increase of the bioactive compounds but also an increase of their bioaccessibility. The bioaccessibility of Citrus bioactive compounds is necessary for calculating more accurately their daily intake amount.

Carotenoid stability and quantity of different sweet potato flesh colour over Postharvest Storage time

Sweet potato is a rich crop with carbohydrates, carotenoidsand pro-Vitamin A.Carotenoids are antioxidants with pharmaceutical potential and have attracted the interest ofresearchers from diverse fields including, biochemistry, biology, food science and technology, medicine, pharmacy, and nutrition for more than a century.Malaysian climate is suitable for sweet potato growingandthere are 10 popular sweet potato variety recommended to grown in Malaysia. This study was conducted to identify which type of Malaysian sweet potato ttuber is the best in its content of carotenoids. Moreover, this study was carried out to evaluate and compared the total carotenoid content (tot. carot. cont.) and their stability in themost popular, available and cheapest variety of Malaysian sweet potato tuber over different Postharvest Storage time of four types of fresh flesh of sweet potato (SP) from KL, Malaysian local markets. Totalcarotenoid content were identified by spectrophotometric method for the powder of freeze dried of flesh for; orange, yellow, purple and white sweet potatofresh samples. The results of this study showed that the orange sweet potato flour showed the highest value in total carotenoid content for the whole four weeks of Storage comparing to the other types of sweet potato followed by yellow, purple and white sweet potato for four weeks Storage. Total carotenoid content ranged from 111.18 µg/g dry weight (DW)in white sweet potatoWSP to 382.217 µg/gdry weight (DW)in orange sweet potato (OSP) in the first week of Storage, while the fourth week of Storage shows that total carotenoid content ranged from 42.903 µg/g DW in white sweet potato WSP to 233.182 µg/g DWin orange sweet potato OSP.This study showed that the local varieties of sweet potatoes differ among themselves with respect to the content of carotenoids in tubers before and after Storage. The Postharvest Storage time was influenced by the quantity and stability of those four types of fresh flesh of sweet potatoes nutritional values.
