    Abstract:

    Escalation is change in Price levels driven by underlying economic conditions. From construction point of view, it is increase in Price of cement, steel and other construction material used in construction industry for a defined period of project. Escalation in the construction industry in recent years has been extremely volatile and same scenario is expected to continue in future and also due to tremendous competition for resources like material and skilled workers which are the key factors to complete construction projects. Many contract these days are fixed Price contract and it is expected that the risk of Price Escalation should be taken up by the contractor. It is very difficult for the contractor to take whole risk and in many cases quality delivery becomes difficult. Even the provision of Escalation in contract does not cater all the aspects or the Escalation in Prices of work. Whatever the Escalation clause is used outside India, cannot be directly applied in Indian scenario because of low inflation rate present there as compared to India. Therefor in present study, an attempt has been made to study and analyze the volatility of Price. The objective of this research is to Study the Escalation clauses presently used in construction contracts adopted by various Government departments/ agencies in India and to study the provision of existing contract & its sufficiency to cater the risk arising, its adequacy & coming up with proper solution so that risk can be mitigated and also to study how far cost Escalation has an impact on the outcome of construction projects. For this, data has been collected from "Economic advisory of India and Labour Union" for estimation of percentage of Price volatility of construction material and labors from 2012 to 2018 in the interval of 6 months. Years showing maximum fluctuation have been highlighted along with efficiency of present Escalation clause with an example. Questionnaire survey will be conducted to highlight important factors related to Escalation and come up with proper solution to mitigate the risk for above. And finally a case study will be conducted for the application of above solution.

    Abstract:

    The objective of this paper is to examine the impact of global food Price Escalation on poverty in South Asian countries since 1990 to 2011. Panel data procedure has been applied for empirical analysis. Panel unit root tests have been utilised before the application of panel co-integration. Poverty is measured through revealed behaviour approach which is considered better than other approaches, as it is based on the actual consumption made by the households. The present study uses actual average household consumption to measure poverty. Empirical results reveal that global food Price Escalation and per capita income positively and significantly affect average household consumption, which is the clear indication of poverty decline. International oil Prices and interest rate significantly but negatively affect the average household consumption in South Asian countries. Findings of this study will be helpful for formulating effective public policies for poverty reduction in the era of trade liberalisation.

    Abstract:

    The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of global food Price Escalation on general inflation in South Asian countries for the period 1990 to 2011. Panel data methodology has been utilized for empirical analysis. Results of the study reveal that external factors like global food Price inflation and oil Prices significantly and positively affect the general inflation in South Asian countries. Inflation is also positively associated with inflation expectations. Real output measured by real GDP of South Asian countries is inversely significant for general inflation. While broad money shows insignificant impact on consumer inflation in South Asian countries. Findings of this study will be helpful for formulating effective monetary and trade policies for the economic stability in the era of trade liberalization.

    Abstract This study evaluates the impact on energy consumption and GHG emissions as well as the technoeconomic feasibility of retrofitting solar domestic hot water (DHW) heating systems to all houses in the Canadian housing stock (CHS). The study was conducted using the Canadian Hybrid Residential End-Use Energy and GHG Emissions Model (CHREM). It was assumed that all houses that have a DHW system with a tank, and a roof facing south, south–west or south–east could be retrofitted with a solar DHW system. As to be expected, the energy and GHG emissions impact of retrofitting SDHW systems into the CHS is substantial. If all eligible existing DHW systems (30% of those existing in the CHS) were to be retrofitted with SDHW systems, the energy consumption and GHG emissions of the Canadian residential sector would be reduced by about 2%. This is equivalent to 22.7 PJ of end-use energy savings and 1 Mt of GHG emissions reduction, or 11.8% and 11.9%, respectively, of the current amounts associated with domestic hot water heating. The energy savings potential with SDHW systems in all provinces are similar, while the GHG emission reductions vary significantly due to the substantially different fuel mix used in different provinces. The economic feasibility results demonstrate the impact of installation and fuel costs, as well as interest and energy Price Escalation rates on payback period.

    Abstract:

    Responsible for 17% of all energy consumption and 16% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada, the residential sector presents substantial opportunities for reducing both energy consumption and GHG emissions. Being one of the highest per capita energy consumers in the world, there is increasing pressure on Canada to reduce both. Amongst the numerous options to reduce energy consumption in the residential sector is the large-scale adoption of active and passive solar technologies in the Canadian housing stock (CHS). In earlier publications, the authors have investigated the techno-economic feasibility of large-scale adoption of window and glazing modifications, window shading devices and solar domestic hot water systems in the CHS as retrofit measures. In this paper, the focus is on the adoption of thermal storage using phase change material (PCM) in the CHS as a retrofit measure. The results indicate that applying PCMs with melting temperature of 23°C to the eligible houses reduce energy consumption GHG emissions of the Canadian housing stock by about 2.5%. The economic feasibility results demonstrate the impact of fuel costs, as well as interest and energy Price Escalation rates on payback period. The economic results indicate that upgrading houses to incorporate PCM storage in the province of New Brunswick is more feasible than other provinces.
