    Abstract:

    The growth of urbanization in Malaysia has led to a greater demand of construction Projects especially for building development. The demand has created pressure on the sustainability issues especially in urban area of the country. There are many efforts relating to sustainability integration in building Projects have been implemented in Malaysia. Unfortunately, till now the issues of unsustainable building Projects in the county are likely to persist. This denotes that there is a gap between the field of sustainability and the integration practices within Malaysian building Projects. In the absent of a proper sustainability integration framework, thus, this research aims to develop an appropriate framework to integrate sustainability into the buildings’ Project Planning Process towards delivering successful sustainable buildings in the country. Several research methodologies were used to achieve a thorough study for this research which are quantitative, qualitative and case study approach (mixed-methods). The findings of literature review were synthesized to formulate a preliminary framework of Integrating Sustainability into the Project Planning Process. The framework consists of the lists of sustainability principles of building (29 factors) and the strategies to integrate the principles into the Project Planning Process (21 factors). The fifty (50) factors have gone through refining Processes by involving 188 Malaysian Project stakeholders. Quantitative survey was employed to elicit this knowledge. The framework was then brought into the case study and qualitative phase for further refining Process and the external validation. The framework was also applied to the chosen three case study Projects to identify the practicality. The final proposal devised at the end of this thesis comes in the form of a ‘Framework of Integrating Sustainability into the Project Planning Process’ with the remaining of 42 validated factors. The proposed framework will provide a better understanding to the Project stakeholders on the sustainability principles of buildings and to expose them to the strategies to integrate the principles into the Project Planning Process. Findings suggest significant connections exist between the level of Project performances and the practices of the sustainability integration factors as proposed in the framework. It is remarkable that excellent performance of a sustainable building Project is achieved when the sustainability principles are integrated efficiently into the Project Planning Process. The thesis outcomes could provide an essential guide during the Planning Process towards delivering a successful sustainable building Project in Malaysia in the future.

  • Pre-Project Planning and its Practice in Industry

    Abstract:

    Pre-Project Planning is the Project phase encompassing all the tasks between Project initiation to detailed design. The development of a Project scope definition packages is one of the major tasks in the pre-Project Planning Process. Project scope definition is the Process by which Projects are defined and prepared for execution. It is at this crucial stage where risks associated with the Project are analyzed and the specific Project execution approach is defined. Nevertheless, the pre-Project Planning practices vary significantly throughout the industry from one organization to another. Pre-Project Planning practice data from 62 industrial Projects and 78 building Projects, representing approximately $5 billion in total construction cost, were collected and pre-Project Planning practices (as measured by the level of scope definition) were analyzed. Poorly defined scope elements among the surveyed Projects will be identified and compared between the two industry sectors. The pre-Project Planning practices among successful and less-than-successful Projects will be compared.

    In previous works [14], models and Processes enabling to make interacting a Project Planning Process with the system design one have been presented. Based on the idea that Planning and design Processes can be guided by consulting past experiences, an integrated case-based approach for coupled Planning Project and system design Processes is proposed in this article. The proposal is firstly based on an ontology of concepts that permits to gather and capitalize knowledge about objects to design, i.e. tasks and systems. Secondly, the integrated case-based Process is presented taking into account Planning of tasks and tasks of design. For the retrieve task, a compatibility measure between requirements and past cases is calculated. It is based on the semantic similarity between past and required concepts as well as past solutions and new requirements. Finally, integrated adaptation and retention of new solution(s) are done.

    Abstract:

    Abstract This article discusses the architecture of an integrated model able to support the coupling between a system design Process and a Project Planning Process. The Project Planning Process is in charge of defining, Planning and controlling the system design Project. A benchmarking analysis carried out with fifteen companies belonging to the world competitiveness cluster, Aerospace Valley, has highlighted a lack of models, Processes and tools for aiding the interactions between the two environments. We define the coupling as the establishment of links between entities of the two domains while preserving their original semantic, thus allowing information to be collected. The proposed coupling is recursive. It enables systems to be decomposed into subsystems when designers consider complexity to be too high, and can also decompose Projects into sub-Projects. The coupling enables systematically links to be drawn between Project entities and system entities. In this paper, we discuss the different possibilities of linking system and Project structures during the design and the Planning Processes. Firstly, after presenting the results of the industrial analysis, the different entities are defined and the various coupling modes are discussed.

    Abstract:

    This article proposes a model dealing with the synchronisation of system design Process and Project Planning Process. This synchronisation is named synchronous coupling and is based on the assumption which states that a mapping exists between system Bill Of Materials and Projects Work Breakdown Structure. Synchronous coupling ensures a consistency in the monitoring and the control of the system design and Project Planning by imposing synchronous milestones during the Project development. The synchronous coupling is based on the definition of three states for each design and Project entity following feasibility and verification criteria, and can thus manage the changes between states. Some rules are defined (precedence and coupling rules) to forbid certain changes when they are inconsistent and to synchronize them.

    The removal of contaminated sediments from waterways by dredging generates concern about the release of contaminants to the water column. The ability to predict the magnitude of these potential releases during the Project Planning Process will improve decision making in regard to water quality impacts and controls or mitigation measures for the dredging Project. This report describes the development of a simple laboratory test, the dredging elutriate test (DRET), to predict the concentration of contaminants in the water column at the point of dredging. The DRET is procedurally similar to the modified elutriate test developed by the Corps of Engineers to predict the contaminant concentrations in effluent from a confined disposal facility. The test involves mixing sediment and site water, allowing the heavier solid particles to settle, sampling and supernatant, and analyzing for dissolved and particulate bound contaminants. Results of the laboratory test compared well with field data collected while dredging New Bedford Harbor sediment, which was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls. Most of the contaminated loading was associated with the suspended particles.
