Morphometric Variations of Rasbora Group (Pisces: Cyprinidae) in Lake Laut Tawar, Aceh Province, Indonesia, Based on Truss Character Analysis
HAYATI Journal of Biosciences, 2013Co-Authors: Zainal A. MuchlisinAbstract:The genetic variation of Rasbora group in Lake Laut Tawar has been reported previously, however information on morphometric variations of this Genus was not available. Hence, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the morphometric characters of Rasbora group in Lake Laut Tawar, in order to contribute useful information on the biology of this important fish. The truss morphometric method was utilized in this study. A total of 45 samples of Depik, 42 samples of Eas and 44 samples of Relo were used in this evaluation. Eight homologous landmarks were determined along the outline of the fish, and based on these landmarks, 14 characters or linear measurements were recognized. Discriminant function analysis was employed to distinguish the fish sample. The results showed that the truss morphological characters could highlight the high differentiation between Relo and the other two groups, and the closeness of Eas and Depik. The morphometric data strongly indicated that Eas and Depik should be regarded as a same species, Rasbora tawarensis, and Relo may be considered as a cryptic species. This finding is in agreement to the genetic data which was published previously.

Methodologyseasons of Rasbora tawarensis (Pisces
2010Co-Authors: Zainal A. Muchlisin, Musri Musman, M.n. Siti AzizahAbstract:Background: Rasbora tawarensis is an endemic freshwater fish in Lake Laut Tawar, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Unfortunately, its status is regarded as critical endangered with populations decreasing in recent years. To date no information on the spawning activities of the fish are available. Therefore, this study provides a contribution to the knowledge on reproductive biology of R. tawarensis especially on spawning seasons as well as basic information for conservation of the species. Methods: Monthly sampling was conducted from April 2008 to March 2009 by using selective gillnets. The gonadosomatic index, size composition and sex ratio were assessed. The gonadal development was evaluated based on macroscopic and microscopic examinations of the gonads. Results: The gonadosomatic index (GSI) varied between 6.65 to 18.16 in female and 4.94 to 8.56 for male. GSI of the female R. tawarensis was higher in March, September and December indicating the onset of reproductive seasons, the GSI and oocyte size being directly correlated with gonadal development stages. Although, a greater proportion of mature male than female was detected during the study, the sex ratio showed that the overall number of female was higher than male. The ovaries had multiple oocyte size classes at every stage of gonadal development, thus R. tawarensis can be classified as a group synchronous spawner or a fractional multiple spawner. Conclusion: The spawning seasons of R. tawarensis were three times a year and September being the peak of the reproductive season and the female was the predominant sex. This species is classified as a group synchronous spawner.

Molecular phylogeny and historical biogeography of the Indonesian freshwater fish Rasbora lateristriata species complex (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae): Cryptic species and west-to-east divergences.
Molecular phylogenetics and evolution, 2016Co-Authors: Wahyu Endra Kusuma, Sahat Ratmuangkhwang, Yoshinori KumazawaAbstract:Abstract Rasbora lateristriata is a primary freshwater fish described from Java Island of Indonesia but its taxonomy, phylogeny, and distributional boundary have not been fully studied. Rasbora baliensis was described as a species endemic to Balinese lakes but its taxonomic status has been controversial in relation to R. lateristriata . Here, we collected Rasbora fishes from various freshwater localities of Java Island, as well as five neighboring islands to conduct molecular and morphological analyses on their phylogenetic relationships. Both molecular analyses using two mitochondrial and two nuclear gene sequences and morphological analyses featuring the body color pattern consistently support that the currently recognized R. lateristriata forms a species complex including at least four major lineages that possibly represent different species. In one of the major lineages, Balinese individuals cluster with those from East Javanese, Lombok and Sumbawa localities, calling for taxonomic revision on R. baliensis . The other three major lineages occur in distinct regions of central, west-central, and western Java and they can be clearly distinguished by the combination of pigmentation patterns in the basicaudal blotch and the supra anal pigment. Our molecular phylogeny suggests west-to-east divergences of the R. lateristriata species complex in Java Island from the late Miocene to Plio-Pleistocene before it finally crossed Wallace’s Line, colonizing Lombok and Sumbawa Islands very recently.

Application of food supplement for increasing growth of wader fish ( Rasbora argyrotaenia)
BioSMART : Journal of Biological Science, 2003Co-Authors: Agung BudiharjoAbstract:Nutrients, both of macro- and micro-nutrients are most important factors in fish production. Food supplement than normally used in fish production is in the form of pellet. Excep t the pellet, however, there are many substances that cheaply and easily found, and c an be used as food supplement for wader fish (Rasbora argyrotaenia ). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of using food supplements of pellet, combination between pellet and tofu waste, dedak (mixture of rice and bran), cassava leaf, or Ipomoea aquatica leaf on the growth of wader fish. The above mentioned substances could promote better growth of fish without disturbing the health of wader fish, and these substances can be used as alternative food supplements in complement with pellet. The study indicated that the tofu waste was relatively better than any other mentioned substances of food supplement. Key words: pellet, food supplement, aquaculture, Rasbora argyrotaenia.
