2008Co-Authors: Mahmoud Abdulwahed, Zoltan K NagyAbstract:Reusable Learning Object (RLO) is, in brief, a conceptual model of a shared vessel of teaching and Learning content which is normally developed using IT tools. Attention have been paid recently towards using RLOs in educational processes for facilitating better Learning and minimizing costs associated with improving teaching and Learning. The importance of a laboratory experience in engineering education curricula has been emphasized in a large number of science and engineering education articles (Johnstone et al 2001; Hofestein et al 2004; Feisel et al 2002; Kirschener et al 1988; Ma et al 2006). Wankat observes that only 6% of the articles published in the Journal of Engineering Education from 1993-2002 had ‘Laboratory’ as a keyword (Wankat 2004). In response to the recent recommendations in the literature regarding the engineering laboratory education, we worked on developing an Online Laboratory Learning Object (OLLO) for enhancing the students laboratory experience, the OLLO was developed for the process control laboratory taught through various courses at the chemical engineering department of Loughborough University.

The feature of adaptive capability becomes more and more important in these systems. These requirements demand new generation e-Learning system. The paper introduces an approach to design new generation Learning resource management and sharing system according to these requirements, which should be realized with bottom up design, and the system adopted this approach should be implemented with technologies of Reusable Learning Object and Web services, and furthermore, these technologies should be integrated inherently according to a integrated framework, and provide programmable Learning resource management facilities. The design approach has been initially validated in the realization of a prototype system aimed to provide capabilities aforementioned.

Examples concerning Alzheimer’s include the film Ex memoria, documentaries like Malcolm and Barbara: Love’s farewell and the Remember us virtual exhibit within Second life. In 2006, the School of Health and Social Care (HSC) began experimenting with integrating the methods and themes of Lifeworld with Hypertext narrative into an educational resource. This process led to the development of a Reusable Learning Object — The carer’s world — designed to give users greater knowledge about, and insight into, the challenges of caring for people with Alzheimer’s. This article describes the context, processes and influences of its creation and a discussion of how this type of development might increase knowledge and understanding around the issues of a carer’s world and also provide a tool for embedding into the higher educational health curriculum.

edsp a dsp centric Reusable Learning Object environment

What is being observed is that the digital signal processing (DSP) students continue to study the same basic core material, but at different levels of the curriculum. What differentiates the treatment of material at one level from another is: the order of presentation; level of mathematical challenge and rigor; amount of supplemental material added; and level of technology exposure. The University of Florida is exploring the use of Reusable Learning Objects (RLO), Objects that can be aggregated to build multiple lessons. Instead of designing complete courses, curriculum designers can use RLOs to configure content for general or course specific use over a range of curriculum levels. In this paper, the preliminary experience gained by using this new paradigm is reported. The outcome is called eDSP, a concept that supports a multi-level broad signal processing curriculum as well as defining the next generation of academic ebooks.
