(Coleoptera: Bostrychidae), is an important pest of stored grains globally. In this study, the impact of geographical origin on male mating success and lateralization in three strains of R. Dominica (i.e., a Greek strain, a Romanian strain and a Turkish strain) was investigated. Concerning the Greek strain, even though most males showed a left-biased approach, males performing right-biased copulation attempts achieved the highest proportion of successful copulations. Males of the Romanian and Turkish strains exhibited right-biased approaches and copulation attempts, resulting in higher mating success over the males that approached and performed copulation attempts from the left or backside of females. Copula was significantly longer than mate recognition and precopula phases. Furthermore, copula duration was significantly longer in the Turkish strain over the Romanian strain, while copula duration differences between Greek and Romanian individuals, as well as between Greek and Turkish individuals, were not significant. Unsuccessful sexual interactions were characterized by a longer precopula in Greek and Romanian strains, but not in the Turkish strain. Our results add basic knowledge to the mating behaviour of R. Dominica, with emphasis on impact of the geographical origin and laterality on male mating success, which may be helpful for optimizing mass-rearing techniques of stored-product pests needed for large-scale laboratory or semi-field experiments, as well as to contribute to the development of behaviour-based control tools.

(Coleoptera: Bostrychidae), selects rough rice (Oryza sativa L. (Poales: Poaceae)) kernels with cracked hulls for reproduction when these kernels are mixed with intact kernels. Differing amounts of kernels with cracked hulls (0, 5, 10, and 20%) of the varieties Francis and Wells were mixed with intact kernels, and the number of adult progeny emerging from intact kernels and from kernels with cracked hulls was determined. The Wells variety had been previously classified as tolerant to R. Dominica, while the Francis variety was classified as moderately susceptible. Few F 1 progeny were produced in Wells regardless of the percentage of kernels with cracked hulls, few of the kernels with cracked hulls had emergence holes, and little firass was produced from feeding damage. At 10 and 20% kernels with cracked hulls, the progeny production, number of emergence holes in kernels with cracked hulls, and the amount of firass was greater in Francis than in Wells. The proportion of progeny emerging from kernels with cracked hulls increased as the proportion of kernels with cracked hulls increased. The results indicate that R. Dominica select kernels with cracked hulls for reproduction.

The efficacy of the juvenile hormone analogue methoprene was evaluated as a layer treatment in a laboratory experiment for control of Rhyzopertha Dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) in wheat, rice and maize. RESULTS: Adults of R. Dominica were placed in vials containing 33, 26 and 29 g (to a depth of 6.5 cm) of wheat, rice and maize, respectively, that was entirely or partially treated with 1, 5 or 10 mg kg−1 methoprene. In wheat and rice, the layer treatments were not as effective as the whole-grain treatment, but there was decreased progeny production as the application rate increased. However, on maize the partial treatments were as effective as the whole-grain treatment at 5 and 10 mg kg−1. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that partial layer treatments with methoprene can be used to control R. Dominica on maize but may not be effective for control of this species on wheat and rice. Spinosad was applied at four dose rates: 20, 100, 500 and 1000 ppm of the formulation, corresponding to 0.025, 0.125, 0.625 and 1.25 ppm of active ingredient, respectively. Adult mortality was measured after 7 and 14 days of exposure in the treated substrate, while progeny production was assessed after the removal of the parental adults. For R. Dominica, adult mortality was high and reached 100% at doses ≥0.125 ppm of a.i. after 14 days of exposure. In contrast, mortality of S. oryzae adults was >95% after 14 days of exposure only at 1.25 ppm of a.i. With the same exposure interval, no significant differences were noted in R. For this purpose, quantities of the above-mentioned grains were treated with spinosad at two dose rates (20 and 50 ppm of the formulation, corresponding to 0.025 and 0.06 ppm AI, respectively), and mortality of the exposed adults in the treated grains was measured after 7 and 14 d, whereas progeny production was assessed 65 d later. (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) under laboratory conditions on stored wheat. The fungus was applied to wheat grains at various concentrations of 3.60 × 106, 3.60 × 108, and 3.60 × 1010 conidia/kg alone, or in combination with 15 and 30 ppm of DEBBM. R. Dominica was held at 20, 25 and 30°C and two RH regimes (56 and 75%) and mortality was registered after 5, 10 and 15 d. Generally, I. fumosorosea was most effective at 25°C caused the highest mortality of R. Dominica at 56% RH. The increase of temperature, concentration and exposure interval increased the insecticidal effect of DEBBM at low RH level. The DE alone suppressed the progeny emergence at higher dose rate as compared I. fumosorosea alone, but their simultaneous use further reduced the progeny production of R. Dominica. The integrated use of both tested bio control agents synergized the effect of each other and caused the highest mortality at 25°C and 56% RH. The results clearly demonstrated that I. fumosorosea and new enhanced DEBBM can be integrated to be an effective control measure for R. Dominica in stored wheat.

Effects of combined thiamethoxam and diatomaceous earth on mortality and progeny production of four Pakistani populations of Rhyzopertha Dominica (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) on wheat, rice and maize.

LordAbstract:Abstract Bioassays were conducted to evaluate the effects of combining thiamethoxam at 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 mg/kg of active ingredient with the diatomaceous earth (DE) formulation, SilicoSec, at the rate of 100 mg/kg against four Pakistan populations of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha Dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae). The tests were carried out with adult beetles on wheat, maize, and rice. Mortality increased with increasing application rates and exposure intervals for each population. Individually, thiamethoxam alone was more effective at the high dose rate than DE alone, but after 14 days of exposure in most cases, there was greater mortality with DE than with the low dose of thiamethoxam. There was greater mortality in wheat than in rice or maize. Populations differed in susceptibility to treatments and production of progeny.

The mortality of adult R. Dominica was decreased over the 9 months of storage period and the combined application of the test materials enhanced the mortality rates compared with alone treatments. The greatest mortality was observed in the combination of DE with thiamethoxam. Progeny suppression was decreased with the extended storage period. The maximum rate of mycosis and sporulation in the cadavers of R. Dominica was observed where B. bassiana was applied alone at the lowest-dose rate. The results of this study indicate that all three control measures may provide safety for an extended period of time against R. Dominica .

Effect of Beauveria bassiana mixed with diatomaceous earth on mortality, mycosis and sporulation of Rhyzopertha Dominica on stored wheat

(Coleoptera: Bostrychidae). The fungus B. bassiana was applied at 2.23 × 10^7, 2.23 × 10^8 and 2.23 × 10^9 conidia kg^−1 of wheat individually as well as mixed with 200 and 400 ppm of Diafil 610. The conditions for the trials were 30 ± 2^oC with 55% r.h. and the counts for mortality were made after 8, 16 and 24 d. All the dead adults were removed after each count and the vials were kept for the next 60 d to assess the emergence of the F_1 generation. The findings from these studies proved that the extended exposure interval and the highest combined dose rate of the entomopathogenic fungus and the diatomaceous earth gave the maximum mortality of the beetles. The emergence of the progeny was also highly suppressed where the maximum dose rate of the synergized treatments was applied. The rate of mycosis and sporulation in the cadavers of R. Dominica was maximum where the low dose rates of B. bassiana were applied.

Pest Management Science, 2012Co-Authors: M A G Pimentel, Leda R A Faroni, Alberto S Correa, R N C GuedesAbstract:BACKGROUND: In spite of the intensive worldwide use of phosphine against stored-product insects, its potential sublethal effects on targeted insect species is seldom recognised and may compromise the efficacy of this fumigant, particularly against phosphine-resistant insects. Therefore, the behavioural response of three populations of the lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha Dominica (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) to sublethal phosphine exposure was assessed. RESULTS: Concentration-mortality bioassays with phosphine confirmed the resistance status of the insect populations studied, with levels of phosphine resistance of 40.8-fold and 85.7-fold compared with the susceptible population. Regarding walking behaviour, determined using a digital video-tracking system, the phosphine-resistant populations were less active than the susceptible population. In addition, sublethal phosphine exposure decreased the walking activity of all three populations. CONCLUSION: Phosphine exposure decreased walking ativity. Such reduced walking activity is likely to lower the respiration rate, thereby minimising phosphine uptake. As higher phosphine resistance was also associated with reduced walking activity, phosphine-resistant populations may resist phosphine fumigation even more efficiently on account of this behavioural trait, further aiding their physiological resistance, and should be a matter of concern. c � 2012 Society of Chemical Industry

The lack of biological studies on this mite species led to the present study carried out in laboratory conditions at eight different temperatures (ranging from 20 to 41°C) and 60% relative humidity using Rhyzopertha Dominica as host. The higher the temperature, the faster: (1) the attachment of female mites to the host egg (varying from 1 to 5 h); (2) the increase in body size of physogastric females (about twice faster at 40°C than at 20°C); and (3) the generation time (ranging from 40 to 220 h). In addition, the higher the temperature, the shorter the maximum female longevity (ranging from about 75 to 300 h). The two estimated temperature thresholds for development of A. lacunatus on R. Bulletin of Entomological Research, 1997Co-Authors: R N C Guedes, Srinivas Kambhampati, B A Dover, Kun Yan ZhuAbstract:Four possible biochemical mechanisms of organophosphate resistance were examined in populations of Rhyzopertha Dominica (Fabricius) collected from eight locations in the states of Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo in Brazil and from seven locations in northeast Kansas, United States. Results from insecticide bioassays with synergists (triphenyl phosphate, diethylmaleate, and piperonyl butoxide) suggested that metabolic detoxification mechanisms might be involved in organophosphate resistance in some of the populations of R. Dominica . However, overall low synergism, non-synergism or even antagonism presented by these synergists in all 15 resistant populations suggested that carboxylesterases, cytochrome P450 monooxygenases and glutathione S -transferases were not likely to play a major role conferring organophosphate resistance in R. Dominica . This hypothesis was strongly supported by our biochemical studies showing no significant difference in these enzyme activities, as well as cytochrome b 5 , P420, and P450 levels between the susceptible and resistant populations. In contrast, all resistant populations of R. Dominica showed higher acetylcholinesterase activity than the susceptible population both in the presence and absence of malaoxon. Furthermore, acetylcholinesterase from the resistant populations was less sensitive to inhibition by malaoxon than that from the susceptible. These results suggested that quantitative and qualitative changes in acetylcholinesterase might contribute to organophosphate resistance in these populations of R. Dominica .

methodology for assessing rice varieties for resistance to the lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha Dominica

Laboratory tests were conducted on single varieties of long-, short-, and medium grain-rice to develop procedures and methodologies that could be used for large-scale screening studies. Progeny production of R. Dominica was positively correlated with the percentage of broken hulls. Although kernel hardness, amylose content, neonate preference for brown rice, and adult emergence from neonates varied among the three rice varieties tested they did not appear to be valid indicators of eventual progeny production, and may not be useful predictors of resistance or susceptibility. Soundness and integrity seem to be the best characters to use for varietal screening studies with R. Dominica.

In this test, 28 varieties of commercial rough rice (10 long grain, 11 medium grain, and 7 short grain) were examined for solid, split and cracked hulls, hull thickness, and adult emergence from neonate R. Dominica introduced on each individual variety. The percentage of solid hulls ranged from 55.5% on Koshihikari variety to 92.8% on Akita variety, and the percentages of cracked and split hulls were correlated with increased susceptibility. The Dobie index for progeny production showed Wells, Jupiter, and Pirogue varieties as the most tolerant to R. Dominica, while Rico and Francis were the most susceptible. The hull thickness of rough rice varied among varieties, but the tolerant varieties appeared to have thicker hulls than the susceptible varieties. There was no difference among rice types (long-, medium-, or short grain) regarding tolerance or susceptibility to R. Dominica. Results show that the characteristics of the rough rice hull are important for conferring susceptibility of individual varieties to R. Dominica.

Two DE commercial products, Insecto™ and Protect-It ® , were applied at their respective label rates of 500 and 400 ppm to long grain rice by hand-mixing the DE with the rice. R. Dominica were exposed for varying time intervals, mortality was assessed, and rice was held at different temperatures and relative humidities (r.h.) for 8 weeks until F 1 adult emergence. There was a significant difference in mortality between the DE treatments and untreated controls ( P P ⩾0.05). Mortality increased as exposure interval increased, and ranged from 15.8% to 69.2%, depending on the exposure interval. Although the general ANOVA showed a significant difference for temperature and r.h., when mortality and r.h. were compared only 5 out of 30 comparisons were significant ( P P R. Dominica on rough rice, and combination treatments with another insecticide may be necessary to give complete control.

LordAbstract:Abstract Bioassays were conducted to evaluate the effects of combining thiamethoxam at 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 mg/kg of active ingredient with the diatomaceous earth (DE) formulation, SilicoSec, at the rate of 100 mg/kg against four Pakistan populations of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha Dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae). The tests were carried out with adult beetles on wheat, maize, and rice. Mortality increased with increasing application rates and exposure intervals for each population. Individually, thiamethoxam alone was more effective at the high dose rate than DE alone, but after 14 days of exposure in most cases, there was greater mortality with DE than with the low dose of thiamethoxam. There was greater mortality in wheat than in rice or maize. Populations differed in susceptibility to treatments and production of progeny.

The mortality of adult R. Dominica was decreased over the 9 months of storage period and the combined application of the test materials enhanced the mortality rates compared with alone treatments. The greatest mortality was observed in the combination of DE with thiamethoxam. Progeny suppression was decreased with the extended storage period. The maximum rate of mycosis and sporulation in the cadavers of R. Dominica was observed where B. bassiana was applied alone at the lowest-dose rate. The results of this study indicate that all three control measures may provide safety for an extended period of time against R. Dominica .

Effect of Beauveria bassiana mixed with diatomaceous earth on mortality, mycosis and sporulation of Rhyzopertha Dominica on stored wheat
Phytoparasitica, 2011Co-Authors: Tahira Riasat, Waqas Wakil, Muhammad Ashfaq, Shahbaz Talib SahiAbstract:A laboratory assay was designed to determine the insecticidal efficacy of Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (Hyphomycetes: Moniliales) and diatomaceous earth (Diafil 610) against Rhyzopertha Dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae). The fungus B. bassiana was applied at 2.23 × 10^7, 2.23 × 10^8 and 2.23 × 10^9 conidia kg^−1 of wheat individually as well as mixed with 200 and 400 ppm of Diafil 610. The conditions for the trials were 30 ± 2^oC with 55% r.h. and the counts for mortality were made after 8, 16 and 24 d. All the dead adults were removed after each count and the vials were kept for the next 60 d to assess the emergence of the F_1 generation. The findings from these studies proved that the extended exposure interval and the highest combined dose rate of the entomopathogenic fungus and the diatomaceous earth gave the maximum mortality of the beetles. The emergence of the progeny was also highly suppressed where the maximum dose rate of the synergized treatments was applied. The rate of mycosis and sporulation in the cadavers of R. Dominica was maximum where the low dose rates of B. bassiana were applied.
