  • Summer-born struggle: The effect of school starting age on health, education, and work.
    Health economics, 2020
Co-Authors: Simone Balestra, Beatrix Eugster, Helge Liebert
    Abstract:

Children starting school older consistently exhibit better educational outcomes. In this paper, we underscore child development as a mechanism driving this effect. Using unique administrative data on health examinations, we study the causal effect of school starting age (SSA) on a child's probability of being diagnosed with special educational needs in early grades. Results show that children with higher SSA are less likely to develop behavioral problems and Speech Impediments, whereas learning disabilities, ADHD, and dyslexia/dyscalculia remain unaffected. Importantly, these effects only arise after primary school entry and are not due to preexisting health conditions. We also find that teachers tend to over-refer relatively young children to special needs services, but this over-referring behavior is not driving the results, which are based on psychologists' diagnoses. The SSA effect persists throughout compulsory schooling, resulting in higher test scores and better quality vocational training contracts. However, SSA does not affect employment, earnings, or disability insurance benefits at labor market entry.

  • Children with Special Educational Needs in Suhareka: Number, Characteristics and School Career
Universal Journal of Educational Research, 2020
    Co-Authors: Fatime Hoxha, Shemsi Morina
    Abstract:

In this paper we have analyzed 40 villages of the municipality of Suhareka. In the years after the war, the number of newborn children with physical and mental health problems has greatly increased. Such problems cause changes in society and are an important and necessary object of study to be given the merit of study. Recently, we have witnessed an increase in the number of children with special needs, ranging from Speech Impediments to physical barriers to changes in the biological structures of the human body. From our analysis, it turns out that in Suhareka, the place with the largest number of children with disorders is Bllace. Suhareka; the place I study is a place not too big as a surface and either not mixed with communities, so their involvement is very small, which makes the analysis very specific and deals in detail with the community Albanian who has experienced these changes over time. In the local registry, all these children have a recommendation for special treatment; and as can be seen from the survey with parents, very few of these recommendations have been followed. The main disorder that the children in this study suffer from was intellectual disorder. From these diseases the most affected by what we have analyzed turns out to be the male.

  • Evaluation of Urinary Iodine Concentrations in Pregnant Women in Tehran
Babol University of Medical Sciences, 2015
    Co-Authors: F Golgiri, Z Dehghani
    Abstract:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Congenital hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency is the most common cause of preventable mental retardation in the world. The lowest level of iodine deficiency during pregnancy could result in disorders such as miscarriage, premature delivery, intrauterine fetal death, low birth IQ, mental retardation, hearing difficulty and Speech Impediments. This study aimed to evaluate urinary iodine concentrations during the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 354 pregnant women referring to prenatal care clinic of Akbar Abadi Hospital in Tehran. Demographic questionnaires were completed by an expert, and random urine samples were obtained to measure urinary iodine concentrations. In addition, venous blood samples were provided to determine the levels of thyroxine (T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) during the first, second and third trimesters. Analysis of iodine status was based on the urinary iodine excretion in the patients. Urinary iodine deficiency was defined as concentrations of ≤100 micrograms/liter. FINDINGS: In this study, 285 patients (80.5%) had urinary iodine levels of ≤100 µg/l with a mean of 62.35±67.7 µg/l. The mean urinary iodine concentrations during the first, second and third trimesters were 65.83±72.4, 50.34±41.5 and 62.67±68.3 µg/l, respectively. No significant difference was observed in the mean of urinary iodine between the first and second trimesters, second and third trimesters, and first and third trimesters. Moreover, no significant differences were observed between patients with urinary iodine levels of

SOCIETY. INTEGRATION. EDUCATION. Proceedings of the International Scientific Conference, 2016
    Co-Authors: Mārīte Rozenfelde, Olga Čapkeviča
    Abstract:

The issue of the involvement of parents in the treatment of children with Speech Impediments in cooperation with Speech therapists at pre-school education institutions is examined in the paper, as the correction of Speech cannot be fully effective, if the family is not involved in the process.  Parents' insufficient awareness on Speech impediment and treatment, undervaluing the importance of Speech Impediments' early detection and timely actions, incorrect and sometimes harmful beliefs regarding child's Speech, shows the necessity to cooperate at all the stages of treatment, provide parental education on the possibilities of children Speech development. The author describes the research, carried out at a pre-school education institution, on the parents', whose children have Speech Impediments, perception of their role and the evaluation of their involvement in the Speech Impediments' correction, that proves that, estrangement occurs when children, being in specialized twenty-four hour care pre-school groups, do not receive the necessary interaction and overall development stimulating activities with their parents.
