    Abstract:

    Abstract Yellow Mombin ( Spondias Mombin L.) is a tropical fruit with increasing acceptance in both national and international fruit markets. The aim of this work was to evaluate the centesimal composition, mineral content, total phenolics, antioxidant activity, and characterize the carotenoids of frozen yellow Mombin pulp. Results indicated that the yellow Mombin pulp contained an important amount of potassium and copper. The antioxidant activity and total phenolic values scored 17.5 mmol TEAC g −1 and 260 mg galic acid/100 g respectively, higher than those reported for other fruits. Five carotenoids were identified, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeinoxanthin, α and β carotene, being β-cryptoxanthin the major one, accounting for the high level of pro-vitamin A activity in the pulp. A 100 g portion of yellow Mombin pulp can provide more than 37% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A.

  • Influence of Ethanolic Extracts of Spondias Mombin (Anacardiaceae) Leaves on Pituitary- Gonadal Axis of Male Wistar Rats

    Abstract:

    Background: Spondias Mombin is one of the tropical plants used locally to treat various kinds of ailment, its use as an anti-conceptive remedy in our locality had been reported. Objective: The aim of this study was to establish a dose-dependent or duration effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Spondias Mombin on the anterior pituitary cells, testes and epididymides of Wistar rats of Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: A total of thirty (30) matured male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=5). Group 1 animals served as control and received vehicle (distilled water). Groups 2 and 3 were administered with 250 mgkg-1 body weight of extract for 4 and 6 weeks respectively, while groups 4 and 5 received 500 mgkg-1 body weight of extract for 4 and 6 weeks also.  Animals were anaesthetized with chloroform and sacrificed at the end of the administration. Body weight, weights of reproductive organs and vital organs were evaluated. Blood was taken from the animals for haematological and biochemical analysis. The pituitary gland, male reproductive and accessory glands were excised and fixed in 10% formalin for routine histological examination. Results: The influence of ethanolic extract of Spondias Mombin leaves on the pituitary cells and reproductive organs of male Wistar rats given 250 and 500 mgkg-1 body weight for 4 and 6 weeks showed loss of cytoplasmic contents and free spaces of pituitary cells, desquamation of seminiferous epithelial cells, degradation of seminiferous tubules and reduction in cells. The epididymis of the test groups showed abundant immature cells and cell debris in their lumen. The accessory glands showed homogenous pinkish fluid, glandular degeneration of the prostate and seminal vesicles with decreased structural integrity. The organ weights of the experimental animals were not significantly affected, however, a significant (P<0.05) decrease in reproductive organ weights was recorded. Ethanolic extract of Spondias Mombin on liver enzymes showed significant protection against hepatobiliary damage.  Conclusion: These results suggest that Spondias Mombin has a dose-dependent and duration deleterious effect on the pituitary and reproductive organs at their cellular levels rather than on the tissue as a whole.

    Remedies for anxiety and fear have been investigated through both orthodox and traditional medicine; this study compared the effects of chronic administration of graded doses of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Spondias Mombin on anxiety and fear in Albino Wistar rats. Fifty rats of Wistar strain (100-120g body weight) were divided into five major groups A-E with each group made up of ten rats (n=10).     Spondias Mombin is relied on for various herbal remedies for numerous conditions. This study is to evaluate the acute toxic effect of Mombin in adult male Wistar rats. Acute toxicity test was carried out with modified Lorke’s method. Twenty-five male rats weighing between 120-180g were used for the sub-chronic study. The rats were divided into five groups A- E (n=5). Group A served as control. Group B and C received respectively 250mgkg -1 and 500mgkg -1 body weight doses of aqueous leaf extract,  groups D and E received  250mgkg -1 and 500mgkg -1 body weight doses of ethanolic extract.     Spondias Mombin is a fructiferous tree used for medicinal purposes and is relied on for its contraceptive and abortifacient properties. The aim is study is to investigate the effect of Spondias Mombin leaf’s aqueous extract on the anterior pituitary cells and hormones. 30 mature male Wistar rats (180- 200g) were obtained and divided equally into three groups 1, 2 and 3. Group 1 served as control and received vehicle. Groups 2 and 3 were treated with 400mgkg -1 and 800mgkg -1 of the leaf extract through oral gavage for 28 days. The animals were anaesthetized by chloroform and sacrificed on the 29 th day.  Blood was obtained from the hearts of the animals and skull was opened to excise the pituitary gland. Testicular and accessory glandular weights were taken. Regression of gonadotropin cells was observed in the experimental groups compared to the control. Hormonal assay showed significantly reduced levels (p<0.05) of FSH, LH and T in experimental groups. Significant (p<0.05) changes were recorded in weights of testis, epididymis and prostate gland with no changes in the weight of seminal vesicle. We conclude that aqueous leaf extract of Spondias Mombin may cause regression of the anterior pituitary cells with decrease in serum levels of FSH, LH and T which supports its use as an herbal contraceptive.     Abstract Yellow Mombin (Spondias Mombin L.) fruits were analyzed for some physical and chemical changes during various stages of maturity. The fruit was found to be ellipsoidal to ovoidal in shape, being, on average, 3·47 cm long and 2·65 cm in width. The weight of the pulp increased during ripening from green mature (40·67%) to the ripe stage (59·67%). The weight of the seeds and skin did not show any significant difference in green mature and half-ripe fruits. ° Brix acidity ratio increased with the advance in maturity. Half-ripe fruits had significantly higher (6·02%) reducing sugars than green mature (4·81%) and ripe (5·21%) fruits.

    Abstract:

    Objective: To chemically characterize Spondias Mombin L. extracts and to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of these extracts on Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Material and methods: Both extracts were submitted to phytochemical prospecting and thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis prior to determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Inhibitory Adhesion Concentration (MIAC) and Bactericidal Kinetics (BK). The Student’s t-test was used to compare MIC results at the 5% significance level. The chemical characterization, MIAC and BK data were analyzed descriptively. Results: Phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins and saponins were detected in the extracts. The hydroethanolic extracts in different concentrations showed statistically superior inhibitory bacterial growth activity (p <0.05) compared to the control against the two investigated microorganisms, whereas the aqueous extracts (also in different concentrations) was statistically superior (p <0.05) to the control only against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The anti-adherent effect of both extracts was superior to that of the control for P. aeruginosa, and similar to that for E. faecalis. In their crude and diluted concentrations, aqueous and hydroethanolic extracts showed bactericidal action within the first two to four hours of contact with the bacteria. Conclusion: Spondias Mombin L. extracts in different concentrations showed superior antimicrobial activity than 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate against the microorganisms with this activity associated to the chemical characterization of these extracts.

    Devido à alta prevalência de doenças bucais, como a cárie dentária, e ao elevado potencial terapêutico de matérias-primas vegetais, reconhecendo o Brasil como um país de grande variedade etnobotânica, a presente pesquisa buscou analisar fitoquimicamente o material vegetal e determinar a ação antibacteriana do extrato de Spondias Mombin L. (cajá) sobre bactérias bucais planctônicas. Para isso foram realizadas a prospecção fitoquímica do material vegetal, a determinação da Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) e da Concentração Inibitória Mínima de Aderência (CIMA) do extrato de Spondias Mombin L. (cajá) e do digluconato de clorexidina a 0,12% (controle) frente às bactérias S. mutans e S. oralis bem como a cinética bactericida das referidas substâncias (teste e controle) sobre o S. mutans. Os resultados revelaram que tal extrato inibiu o crescimento bacteriano em todas as concentrações testadas na CIM, além de ter impedido a aderência dos microrganismos à parede do tudo de vidro também até a concentração de 1:512 do extrato, mostrando-se superior, nessas duas análises, ao digluconato de clorexidina a 0,12%. Observou-se também que o extrato bruto de Spondias Mombin L. já demosntrou ação bactericida após duas horas de contato com o S. mutans, enquanto o mesmo extrato, em sua concentração inibitória mínima, exibiu efeito bactericida somente após quatro horas de contato com tal microrganismo.
