Methods: Adults with obesity who sought help for weight loss at a medical obesity clinic were consecutively enrolled in the study and were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. All participants received standard instructions for a healthy lifestyle. The intervention group attended an 8-week Stress Management Program that comprised diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided visualization and instructions about healthy nutrition/dietary habits. Anthropometric parameters were assessed and several questionnaires were completed by all participants, at the beginning and at the end of the study. Results: A total of 45 adults (mean age±SD 45.7±10.55 years) with obesity were enrolled in the study; 22 in the intervention group and 23 in the control group. Participants in the two groups were matched for age and BMI. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a simple, zero cost Stress Management Program on patients suffering from NP. METHODS: This study is a parallel-type randomized clinical study. People suffering from chronic non-specific NP were chosen randomly to participate in an eight week duration Program of Stress Management (N = 28) (including diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation) or in a no intervention control condition (N = 25). Self-report measures were used for the evaluation of various variables at the beginning and at the end of the eight-week monitoring period. Descriptive and inferential statistic methods were used for the statistical analysis. RESULTS: At the end of the monitoring period, the intervention group showed a statistically significant reduction of Stress and anxiety (p = 0.03, p = 0.01), report of Stress related symptoms (p = 0.003), percentage of disability due to NP (p = 0.000) and NP intensity (p = 0.002). At the same time, daily routine satisfaction levels were elevated (p = 0.019). No statistically significant difference was observed in cortisol measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Stress Management has positive effects on NP patients.

Although the role of Stress has been well-documented, there is a paucity of studies investigating the effect of an adjunctive Stress Management Program on PG. In this 8-week parallel randomized waitlist controlled trial pathological gamblers, already in the gamblers anonymous (GA) group, were assigned randomly in two groups, with the intervention group (n = 22) receiving an additional Stress Management Program (consisting of education on diet and exercise, Stress coping methods, relaxation breathing –RB- and progressive muscle relaxation -PMR). Self-reported measures were used in order to evaluate Stress, depression, anxiety, sleep quality/disturbances, life-satisfaction and daily routine. The statistical analyses for the between group differences concerning the main psychosocial study outcomes revealed a statistically significant amelioration of Stress, depression, anxiety symptoms and an increase of life-satisfaction and a better daily routine in participants of the intervention group. We hope that these will encourage researchers and clinicians to adopt Stress Management in their future work.

A Stress Management Program for university students

Participants (n = 27) were randomly assigned to either an intervention or a waiting list control group. The Program, including small group discussions, completion of a workbook, and follow-up interviews, was conducted for the intervention group for three weeks. Participants (n = 8 and n = 12 for the intervention and waiting list control groups, respectively) responded to three waves of questionnaires (pre, post, and follow-up). The results showed significant favorable intervention effects for knowledge of Stress, problem-solving confidence, and Stress responses on the post-tests, while no intervention effects were found at the follow-up.

Methods: A total of 300 employees from a company in western Japan were invited to participate in the study. Those who consented to enter the study were assigned to an intervention (n=149) or waiting list control group (n=151). Participants in the intervention group received a small-group Stress Management Program. The Program was primarily aimed at increasing knowledge about Stress and improving coping skills. To investigate the intervention effect, change scores in outcome variables were calculated by subtracting the scores at pre-intervention from those at post-intervention (8 weeks after the pre-intervention survey). Next, the difference in the scores between groups was examined using analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) with the pre-intervention score as the covariate. Results: Favorable intervention effects were found on knowledge about Stress and on coping skills (P<0.001 and P=0.012, respectively) and adverse effects on psychological diStress (P=0.022). However, this adverse effect on psychological diStress did not exist among those who initially perceived higher levels of job control. Conclusion: The single-session Stress Management Program was effective on improving knowledge about Stress, and coping skills, where job control moderated the effect of the Program on psychological diStress.

Participants (n=24) were assigned to either an intervention or a waiting list control group. A five-session Program, including psychoeducation, group discussion, role-playing and relaxation training, was conducted for the intervention group at two week intervals. Eight participants from each of the groups responded to pre- and post-intervention questionnaire surveys. The positive intervention effect was significant for social support from co-workers (p=0.035), whereas the negative intervention effect was significant for proactive coping (p=0.033). No significant effect was observed for Stress responses (vigor, anger, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and somatic Stress responses) (p>0.05). The positive intervention effect was marginally significant for social support from co-workers (p=0.085) and anger (p=0.057) among those who at first had high Stress response scores in the pre-intervention survey (n=5 and n=4 for the intervention and waiting list control groups, respectively). Furthermore, the positive intervention effect was significant for social support from co-workers (p=0.021) and marginally significant for resignation coping (p=0.070) among those who at first had high job control scores (n=4 and n=5 for the intervention and waiting list control groups, respectively). Results showed that the Stress Management Program conducted in this study contributed to increasing social support from co-workers. This study suggests that a Program that focuses on a particular subgroup (e.g., those with high Stress responses or high job control) might be effective in enhancing coping skills, increasing social support, and reducing Stress responses.

Physical parameters were measured at T1 and T2. Results A reduction of 23% in PSS was observed in the CB group, while the CAM-CB group yielded 18% reductions in PSS from T1 to T3 [F(2,108) = 3.099; p = .049]. No significant interactions were observed in the frequency of psychosomatic symptoms and physical parameters. However, a significant downward time trend was observed (p < .001) and larger percentage changes in physical responses were shown in the CAM-CB group than CB group. Conclusion Clinical evidence of both the CAM-CB and CB Program has been demonstrated in the current study and both approaches are easy to be self-implemented. The CAM technique might serve as an alternative choice for self-administered Stress Management to replace the additional time needed for professional follow-up contacts. It might further improve some physical responses such as handgrip strength and resting heart rate, which are associated with better psychosomatic health and better occupational Stress Management.

The aim was to investigate determinants of high use of a worksite self-help web-based Program for Stress Management. Two versions of the Program were offered to randomly selected departments in IT and media companies. A static version of the Program including health screening tool, diary and information about Stress was offered to the control group. Additional materials, i.e. interactive, cognitive-based and classical Stress Management exercises and a chat room, were offered to the intervention group. Baseline data regarding participants' demographics, health (self-ratings and biological measures), lifestyle, work-related factors and group membership were analyzed to study determinants of employees' participation in the Program during a period of 12 months. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used and found intervention group membership, being a woman, having at most a secondary education, regular physical exercise habits and having positive expectations of the Program were significant predictors of high use. The findings demonstrate that the interactivity of a web-based Program is an important factor for determining participation in a web-based worksite Stress Management Program. Implications for those developing and implementing future web-based health promotion activities are discussed.
