  • integration of Applications into digital Television environment
    2001
Co-Authors: Chengyuan Peng, Pablo Cesar, Petri Vuorimaa
    Abstract:

The overall software system integration to run interactive services in set-top box is hard and essential since there is no ready system to ensure the cross-platform interoperability of the Applications. This paper presents a layered system integration model, which consists of interoperable Applications, Application Programming Interface (API), system software, and software and hardware resources. The digital Television Applications are classified into three categories according to the service architecture. All Applications are managed and controlled by an application manager, which plays a central role in the model. The set-top box hardware prototype used in the system is a single board computer. Linux with selected modules was chosen as the set-top box operating system. Kaffe Java virtual machine was ported to Linux platform to interpret Java bytecodes of Applications. A working prototype system is introduced in the paper. Finally, we give the system running results and further improvement.

  • user interface design principles for interactive Television Applications
International Journal of Human-computer Interaction, 2008
    Co-Authors: Konstantinos Chorianopoulos
    Abstract:

Interactive Television (ITV) Applications gratify entertainment needs and leisure activities in a relaxed domestic context. Then, the mentality of efficiency and task completion implied by many user interface heuristics may not be suitable for design and expert evaluation of ITV. In line with the contemporary movement towards the design of the user experience of computing systems, a set of design principles for ITV Applications has been developed. Instead of information technology, the field of communication science was explored, which has accumulated an extensive theory of TV usage and viewer behavior. For the empirical validation, the principles were employed in the design of an interactive music TV application. The results suggest that a small set of generic principles could support the systematic design of ITV Applications and produce a design rationale that is traceable and comparable to alternative solutions, during the process of early product development. In addition, the principles could be refin...

  • Affective usability evaluation for an interactive music Television channel
    Computers in Entertainment, 2004
    Co-Authors: Konstantinos Chorianopoulos, Diomidis Spinellis
    Abstract:

Computer-mediated Television brings new requirements for user interface design and evaluation, since interactive Television Applications are deployed in a relaxed domestic setting and aim to gratify the need for entertainment. Digital video recorders, the generation of custom computer graphics on each digital set-top box, and the introduction of new advertising formats are important issues for research and practice. We explore the employment of an animated character and the dynamic insertion of advertising in the design of an intuitive user interface for interactive music-video Television. We found that the animated character and the skippable videoclip feature seamlessly enhanced consumer satisfaction, as shown by affective usability questionnaires.

  • intelligent user interfaces in the living room usability design for personalized Television Applications
    Intelligent User Interfaces, 2003
Co-Authors: Konstantinos Chorianopoulos, George Lekakos, Diomidis Spinellis
    Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to present our experience from the design of a personalized Television application, and the implications for the design of interactive Television Applications in general. Personalized advertising is a gentle introduction to interactive Television Applications through a push paradigm that is closer to the established patterns of Television use. While personalization is a practice widely used on the Internet, applying personalization techniques over digital Television infrastructures presents significant obstacles, which we address with explicit design moves

  • HICSS - Needs and Gratifications for Interactive TV Applications: Implications for Designers
    2003
    Co-Authors: J. Livaditi, K. Vassilopoulou, C. Lougos, Konstantinos Chorianopoulos
    Abstract:

This paper uses the well-established uses and gratifications' theory in order to understand and categorize viewers' needs in the context of digital TV Applications. The results of this analysis unveil that such needs can either be ritualized or instrumental. Furthermore, the uses and gratifications theory was applied in order to formulate a questionnaire to which 68 current users of digital TV responded. The results of this empirical study reveal that Applications most suitable for the interactive Television environment should aim at the gratification of ritualizedneeds, such as entertainment and communication. Therefore, Applications that appeal to instrumental needs, such as information and transactions should be included as add-ons to entertainment and communication services. Finally, the implications of this analysis for the design of interactive Television Applications are exploited.

  • evaluating the usability of interactive digital Television Applications
International Conference on Information Technology: New Generations, 2013
Co-Authors: Andrés Solano, Cristian Rusu, César A. Collazos, Luis Merchan
    Abstract:

The evaluation of the usability of an interactive system is one of the most important steps in the user-centered design approach. Usability evaluation methods are quite diverse and many of them may be used to evaluate Interactive Digital Television (iTV) Applications. Questions arise when deciding which method and/or combination of methods give more (relevant) information. Three iTV Applications have been evaluated, applying several usability evaluation methods. Based on the effectiveness and efficiency of these methods, this paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the usability of iTV Applications.

  • Evaluating interactive digital Television Applications through usability heuristics
Ingeniare. Revista chilena de ingeniería, 2013
Co-Authors: Andrés Solano, Cristian Rusu, César A. Collazos, Jose L. Arciniegas
    Abstract:

    2013
Co-Authors: Andrés Solano, Cristian Rusu, César A. Collazos, Jose Arciniegas
    Abstract:

Interactive Digital Television (iDT) is considered as the convergence of Television and computer technologies. Usability evaluation for Applications based on emerging information technology brings new challenges. The main iDT feature is that the user may interact with the application; therefore usability should be a main concern when designing iDT Applications. Current research usually focuses on iDT Applications from a technical point of view, rather than a user–centered approach. There is a need for new usability evaluation methods or at least for the use of traditional evaluations in novel ways. A set of specific usability heuristics was defined and validated, in order to help the usability evaluations of iDT Applications. A usability checklist to be used when applying iDT heuristics is also proposed.

  • Methodological proposal to evaluate the usability of Interactive Digital Television Applications
    2012 7th Colombian Computing Congress (CCC), 2012
Co-Authors: Andrés Solano, Cristian Rusu, César A. Collazos, Jose L. Arciniegas
    Abstract:

Usability is considered one of the basic attributes of any interactive system. It is a concept that includes a set of metrics and methods with the objective to obtain systems easy to use and easy to learn. The usability evaluation methods, that allow the measurement of the usability attributes, are diverse. Its realization depends of variables like costs, time availability, human resources, etc. A large number of usability evaluation methods can be used to evaluate Interactive Digital Television - iDT Applications, but the unknown is the level of information that gives each of them and/or combination with each other. This investigation is focused on the analysis of the usability evaluation methods in iDT Applications, providing a usability evaluation methodological proposal, in order to obtain the major amount of relevant information when evaluating this type of Applications.

  • A research on typing methods for interactive Digital Television Applications
    IEEE Latin America Transactions, 2015
Co-Authors: Aurora Barrero, David Melendi, Xabiel G. Pañeda, Roberto García, Laura Pozueco, Jose L. Arciniegas
    Abstract:

It has been several years now since we started to experience a change in traditional Television services. Recently, the digitalization of these services has improved the usage of the available electromagnetic spectrum, increased the quality of the service and increased the number of channels. The next step in this evolution is the transformation of traditional Television into a fully interactive service. This change allows users to run Applications on the Television, similar to those of mobile phones or computers. Nevertheless, the main interaction device delivered with Televisions and set-top-boxes is still the traditional remote control. This device is suitable to perform certain actions such as move a pointer or select something, but it has not been designed to carry out more complex actions such as writing text. In this paper we present the main outcomes of a project aimed at researching typing methods for interactive digital Television services. During the project we have carried out several experiments with real users, who had to use different typing methods and devices that may be suitable for interactive digital Television Applications

    Abstract:

Interactive Digital Television (iDT) is considered as the convergence of Television and computing technologies, which meets three typical features: interactivity, personalization and digitalization. Despite the appearance of these new media, traditional Television has not lost its validity and remains one of the most used media worldwide. Simultaneously, users and their needs grow and change rapidly as technology advances. So it is necessary to ensure adequate appropriation by users who use the iDT. This article presents the experience of evaluating the usability of iDT Applications focusing on ease of learning and use.
