Acarologia, 2018Co-Authors: Edward A. Ueckermann, Uri Gerson, Eric Palevsky, Eitan Recht, Pieter D. TheronAbstract:An annotated list and key to the 26 species of phytophagous false spider mites (Trombidiformes: Tenuipalpidae) known from Israel is provided. Eight species, namely Brevipalpus californicus, B. lewisi, B. obovatus, B. phoenicis, B. yothersi, Raoiella indica, Tenuipalpus granati and T. punicae are agricultural pests. The others have little economic impact, or are possibly controlled by natural enemies. A key to all the species is given.

Ontogenetic development of chaetotaxy in Tenuipalpidae: a survey with special reference to sexual dimorphism
Zootaxa, 2020Co-Authors: Zhi-qiang ZhangAbstract:In this paper, we provide a comparative survey of ontogenetic development of chaetotaxy in the family Tenuipalpidae, with the aim to compare patterns among species/genera and to discover some general trends. We also want to find gaps within published literature and provide suggestions for future studies. Although we focused on the ontogeny of setal developments, we also reviewed sexual dimorphism in chaetotaxy in the family Tenuipalpidae.

tenuipalpus acari trombidiformes tetranychoidea Tenuipalpidae
Fauna of New Zealand, 2018Co-Authors: Zhi-qiang ZhangAbstract:The Tenuipalpidae (Acari: Trombidiformes: Tetranychoidea), commonly known as false spider mites or flat mites, are one of the main groups of obligate phytophagous mites of importance in agriculture and horticulture. They can cause significant damage to host plants, by feeding and vectoring diseases of plants, and are among the common species intercepted on imported fresh produce; several species are known as invasive species in different regions of the world. Tenuipalpus is the largest genus in the family and currently comprises over 300 species of worldwide distribution. In New Zealand, nine species have been recognized and are described here in detail and illustrated with line drawings. A key to adult females of Tenuipalpus from New Zealand is provided to assist identification. The ontogenetic changes of T . antipodus and T . mahoensis in idiosomal and leg chaetotaxy on the female, male, deutonymph, protonymph and larva are also presented.

Two species of Acaricis (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) from New Zealand, moved from the genus Tenuipalpus , with a key to the known species
Acarologia, 2018Co-Authors: Elizeu B. Castro, Ronald Ochoa, Jennifer J. Beard, Reinaldo J. F. FeresAbstract:Acaricis Beard & Gerson (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) is a small genus of flat mites with three species described from Australian and New Zealand sedges (Poales: Cyperaceae). In this article, we redescribe two species, Tenuipalpus montanus Collyer and T. alpinus Collyer, and move them to the genus Acaricis, so that these species become Acaricis montanus (Collyer) comb. nov. and A. alpinus (Collyer) comb. nov.. These two species share several characters with other Acaricis that species of Tenuipalpus do not. A key to the world species of Acaricis is also proposed.

Meyeraepalpus delfinadae Smiley et al ., is reinstated based on new material and an analysis of its phylogenetic relationships. Crossipalpus muellerianae Smiley et al. , Crossipalpus verticillatae Smiley et al. , and Tegopalpus conicus Womersley are redescribed and rediagnosed from the original type specimens and newly collected material; and Chaudhripalpus creelae (Smiley et al .), Magdalenapalpus strandtmanni (Smiley et al .) and Philippipalpus agohoi Corpuz-Raros are redescribed and rediagnosed from type material only. All flat mite species were host-specific. Up to three species of flat mite were collected from a single she-oak species. Leg setation and ontogeny are reviewed for the taxa studied. A key to Tenuipalpidae from Casuarinaceae is provided. A phylogeny of the subfamily Tegopalpinae found the following relationships: Meyeraepalpus ( Australopalpus, Crossipalpus, Palpipalpus ( Magdalenapalpus ( Philippipalpus ( Chaudhripalpus + Tegopalpus )))). Our preliminary analysis of the Tegopalpinae suggested the group is monophyletic and its sister group is Phytoptipalpus .

A review of Amblypalpus and Priscapalpus (Acari: Trombidiformes: Tenuipalpidae), including two new species of Amblypalpus from Iran.
Zootaxa, 2013Co-Authors: Sadegh Farzan, Edward A. Ueckermann, Mahdieh Asadi, Owen D. Seeman, Jennifer J. BeardAbstract:Two new species of Amblypalpus (Acari: Trombidiformes: Tenuipalpidae) are described from Iran: Amblypalpus iraniensis sp. nov., from Wild Almond, Amygdalus scoparia (Rosaceae), and Amblypalpus thymus sp. nov., from Common Thyme, Thymus vulgaris (Lamiaceae). The new species are classified tentatively in Amblypalpus. The species Priscapalpus thomissus Meyer, 1979 is transferred to Amblypalpus and the genus concept of Priscapalpus is narrowed and therefore redefined. Similarly, we present an expanded concept of Amblypalpus. A key to brevipalpine genera and Amblypalpus species is provided.
