Feeding level and oral stereotypies in dairy cows

OredssonAbstract:AbstractThe aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of feeding strategy on the performance of oral stereotypies, such as Tongue-Rolling and bar-biting, and other behaviours in lactating dairy cows. Thirty–seven cows of the Swedish Red and Wliite breed were randomly assigned into three treatments with different feeding strategies. Cows in treatment (AL) were given food ad libitum during the whole experimental period, which lasted from weeks 3 to 26 post partum. The second group (AL–R) was given food ad libitum during weeks 3 to 14 post partum, thereafter they were given food at a restricted level. The third group (R) was given food at a restricted level during the whole experiment period. All cows were offered a total mixed ration consisting of 650 g concentrate and 350 g forage per kg twice a day and their individual daily food intakes were registered. Behavioural recordings were made for 4 h on a fixed day every 2nd week, where each individual cow was observed every 2nd minute.During the complete experimental period, 27 out of the 37 cows showed stereotypies; 13 cows in group R, 10 in group AL–R and four in the AL group. The proportions of cows showing stereotypies were not independent of feeding treatment within the respective periods (P < 0·01). The stereotypy levels, counted as the mean frequency of recordings per treatment period, increased significantly between period 1 (lactation weeks 3 to 14) and period 2 (weeks 17 to 26) in group AL–R (P < 0·01) and in group R(P < 0·01), but not in the AL group. In period 2 the R cows had significantly higher stereotypy levels than the cows in the AL–R group (P < 0·01). Group R decreased the time spent eating between the periods (P < 0·001), with the same tendency in group AL–R. The AL group had longer eating time in period 2 than the AL–R (P < 0–001) and the R (P < 0·001) cows. The AL cows had a higher frequency of rumination than the other treatments in period 2 (P < 0·01). Both the AL–R and the R cows increased their activity levels between the periods (P < 0·001 for both). There were also differences between treatments in period 2, where the AL cows were less active than the AL–R (P < 0·05) and the R cows (P < 0·01).It is concluded that oral stereotypies in dairy cows are highly affected by feeding strategy, where restrictive feeding of a mixed food induces significant increases of stereotypies. The results of this investigation clearly indicate that restricted feeding of a diet with high levels of concentrate has a negative effect on the well being of lactating cows.

Stereotypies and cortisol secretion in heifers subjected to tethering

RedboAbstract:Abstract The aims of this study were to assess the effect of tethering on environmentally induced stereotypies and urine cortisol concentration in Swedish Red and White heifers, and to analyse a possible relationship between the performance of stereotypies and cortisol concentration. Three groups of heifers ( N =14) with oral stereotypies, mainly consisting of Tongue-Rolling, were studied during three consecutive autumns. Recordings of the duration and frequency of stereotypies were made from the second and third day after the heifers had been transferred from pasture and tethered indoors, and for 7 weeks thereafter. The four heifers from the previous year were also subjected to urine collection to determine total 24-h concentration of cortisol during Weeks 1–8 post-tethering. An adrenalcorticoid response test was conducted after 8 weeks of tethering. Exogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) was administered to heifers with, and without, stereotypies. All 14 heifers from the three cohorts showed the same pattern concerning time allocated to stereotypies during the 8 weeks post-tethering. From a zero-level in pasture, they increased the time spent performing stereotypies until Week 4, whereafter the stereotypy level decreased. The heifers all had similar patterns of cortisol concentrations during the observation period. The cortisol concentration was high during the first week after tethering (on average, 84.25 nmol l −1 ), but from the second week onwards the concentration was decreased. The ACTH test showed no difference in adrenal status between tethered heifers with, or without, stereotypies. There was no indication that individual variation in cortisol level was associated with the performance of stereotypies. This study shows that tethering after a grazing period leads to increased levels of stereotypies and high urine levels of cortisol.

The influence of restraint on the occurrence of oral stereotypies in dairy cows

RedboAbstract:Abstract Sixteen dairy cows with stereotypies (i.e. movements that are repeated regularly without any obvious function) consisting of Tongue-Rolling, sometimes combined with bar-biting, were exposed to three different treatments: Group A was tethered in stalls after a 4-month grazing period, Group B remained tethered inside the stable during the normal grazing period, and Group C was tethered for 8 months and then transferred into loose housing. The duration of the stereotypies and the frequency of adjoining behaviours were registered in Groups A and B from the first week after the tethering of Group A and for the next 8 weeks. In Group C, the duration of stereotypies was registered when they were tethered and after they had been transferred into loose housing. Group A showed a marked behavioural response to the tethering, with the highest levels of stereotypies during the first 3 weeks after tethering, and thereafter a marked decrease. Groups A and B had significantly different stereotypy levels 2–6 weeks after tethering ( P =0.035). In Group C, five of six cows stopped performing stereotypies after the transfer into loose housing, while one cow which previously showed high stereotypy levels continued at a very low level, from 25.7% when tethered to 0.6% in the loose housing (of total observation time). These results indicate that the tethering of dairy cows has negative implications on their welfare.

A note on relations between oral stereotypies in dairy cows and milk production, health and age

PetterssonAbstract:The relationships of oral stereotypies to milk production and health were investigated in 95 dairy cows that had completed between one and five lactations. Forty cows in the herd performed stereotypies, mainly Tongue-Rolling and to a lesser extent bar-biting. A significant positive relation was found between the dependent variable milk production and stereotypies (P < 0·05) according to a GLM-model also containing lactation group (age; P < 0·01), sire (breeding value for milk yield; P < 0·01), and health I ailments (P > 0·05). There was no correlation between different phases in lactation and the frequency of stereotypies (Spearman correlation coefficient = 0·124; no. = 0·40; P > 0·05).

Stereotypical behaviour at high yielding dairy cows farms - "Tongue Rolling"

The investigation was carried out in august at loose-housing type of farms, in 30 heads of cattle from four groups: drying (15 to 7 days before calving), puerperium (up to 40 days after calving, early lactation (up to 120 days after calving) and late lactation (200 to 300 days after calving). Assessment of stereotypical behaviour (Tongue Rolling) was carried out by the method of careful observation of all the tested animals 2 to 4 hours after morning feeding. Blood samples were taken by puncture of jugular vein from 8 cows out of each animal group. In these blood samples there was determined the concentration of glucose, beta hydroxy-butyric acid (BHBA), total protein (TP), albumin, urea, total bilirubin (TBI), Ca, P, and Mg as well as AST and ALT activities. During the period up to 40 days after calving (puerperium), behavioral disorder in the form of „Tongue Rolling“ was found out in 4 out of 30 observed animals (13.33%). Average concentrations of all the tested blood parameters during the drying period as well as in early and late lactation were within physiological values for cattle. This cross-sectional survey investigated 400 volunteered adult subjects (176 males and 224 females) between the ages of 18 and 60 whose parents and grandparents were of Esan ethnicity. The Tongue and ear wax type were observed and examined physically thus classifying subjects into rollers/none-rollers, folders/none-folders and dry or wet cerumen type. Results indicates that Tongue rollers (72.9%) were more than non-rollers (27.3%), in the same vein, Tongue folders (68.3%) were also more than non-folders (31.7%) in the studied population. A larger percentage of the population also had wet ear wax (65%) while (35%) had dry ear wax. The chisquared analysis of variance showed that there is a significant difference (P<0.05) between those who can roll their Tongue and those who cannot, those that could fold their Tongue and those who cannot as well as between those with wet ear wax and dry ear wax. This study therefore provides data on the distribution of Tongue rollers, Tongue folders as well as variability in cerumen type.
