    : We find, using a local density approximation +Hubbard U method, that oxygen vacancies tend to cluster in a linear way in SrTiO(3), a prototypical perovskite oxide, accompanied by strong electron localization at the 3d state of the nearby Ti transition metal ion. The vacancy clustering and the associated electron localization lead to a profound impact on materials properties, e.g., the reduction in free-carrier densities, the appearance of characteristic optical spectra, and the decrease in vacancy mobility. The high stability against the vacancy migration also suggests the physical reality of the vacancy cluster.

    Abstract:

    This study examined emerging adults’ qualitative responses to a TV depiction of idealized female beauty. Ninety-one participants (M age 19.5) viewed a reality TV show featuring a woman’s cosmetic surgery transformation and were asked to write a response to what they viewed; researchers coded these responses for emotional tone and thematic content. Further, participants’ own appearance satisfaction and interest in changing their appearance via cosmetic surgery was assessed. Results indicated that both young men and women viewed the media message positively and endorsed the importance of females’ pursuit of beauty ideals. The content of men’s and women’s responses were similar with an emphasis on the importance of physical attractiveness, the psychological benefits of beauty, and the entertainment value of the reality TV show. Finally, young women who responded relatively positively to the show reported a greater likelihood of interest in obtaining cosmetic surgery than were women who responded relatively negatively to the show. Implications for body image development and emerging adults’ expectations and values regarding physical beauty are discussed in the context of relevant theories.

    Abstract Two studies are presented that examine the influence of media messages about cosmetic surgery on youths’ interest in altering their own physical appearance. In Study 1, 170 participants (59% female; M age = 19.77 years) completed surveys assessing their impression of reality television shows featuring cosmetic surgery, appearance satisfaction, self-esteem, and their interest in cosmetic surgery. Results indicated that participants who reported favorable impressions of reality television shows featuring cosmetic surgery were more likely to indicate interest in pursuing surgery. One hundred and eighty-nine participants (51% female; M age = 19.84 years) completed Study 2. Approximately half of the participants were exposed to a television message featuring a surgical make-over; the other half was exposed to a neutral message. Results indicated that participants who watched a television program about cosmetic surgery wanted to alter their own appearance using cosmetic surgery more than did participants who were not exposed to this program.

This room deals directly with lingering anxieties that growing up in a constantly monitored environment caused. Repeatedly, fun summer days beside the pool would end in tears. This work is an homage to those tears and the feeling of metaphorically “drowning” in a situation I was unable to affect. A figure with a security camera in place of a head stands eerily, as though caught in motion, in the middle of an empty room. The rear wall of the room is crimson and covered in razorblades. These razors allude not only to my abuser’s dangerous nature, but to my struggle with self-harm as a result.     Here You Can Have Your Phone Back Mixed Media Varied Scale 2020 This work brings forth physical evidence of an interaction with my abuser. Attached to the rear wall was my cellphone, which after a bout of anger from him, was returned to me in pieces. I have recreated the scene of the pieces and glass shards scattered across tile flooring. This work is significant because it does not present a story from another side, but instead displays the unquestionable and direct result of the story. This work focuses on the dichotomy between the appearance and actuality of one’s home life.
