treating drug using prison inmates with Auricular Acupuncture a randomized controlled trial
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, 2004Co-Authors: Anne H Berman, Ulf Lundberg, Aud L Krook, Carl GyllenhammarAbstract:This study tested the viability of Auricular Acupuncture in prisons for alleviating inmates' symptoms of psychological and physical discomfort and reducing their drug use. The experimental NADA-Acudetox protocol was compared with a non-specific helix control protocol in a randomized trial. Over a period of 18 months, a 4-week, 14-session Auricular Acupuncture treatment program was offered in two prisons to 163 men and women with self-reported drug use. Among treatment completers, no differences by method were found in self-reported symptoms of discomfort. Drug use occurred in the NADA group but not in the helix group. In contrast, confidence in the NADA treatment increased over time while it decreased for the helix treatment. No significant negative side effects were observed for either method. Participants in both groups reported reduced symptoms of discomfort and improved nighttime sleep. Future research should compare Auricular Acupuncture to a non-invasive control in order to attempt to disentangle active effects from placebo.

Auricular Acupuncture effectively reduces state anxiety before dental treatment—a randomised controlled trial
Clinical Oral Investigations, 2012Co-Authors: Andrea Michalek-sauberer, Erich Gusenleitner, Andreas Gleiss, Gabor Tepper, Engelbert DeuschAbstract:ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to analyse whether Auricular Acupuncture, Acupuncture at the outer ear, could reduce state anxiety before dental treatment.MethodsThis prospective, randomised patient-blinded study with 182 patients compared anxiety before dental treatment following Auricular Acupuncture at the relaxation-, tranquillizer- and master cerebral points (Auricular Acupuncture group) versus Acupuncture at sham points (finger-, shoulder- and tonsil points; sham group) and a non-intervention control group. Anxiety was assessed using the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (German version) before Auricular Acupuncture and 20 min thereafter, immediately before dental treatment.ResultsAuricular Acupuncture reduced state anxiety score more effectively from 54.7 ± 10.8 to 46.9 ± 10.4 (mean ± SD) than sham Acupuncture from 51.9 ± 10.2 to 48.4 ± 10.0. In contrast, state anxiety in the control group increased from 51.0 ± 11.7 to 54.0 ± 11.6 (mean increase +3.0; CI +4.7 to +1.2). The decrease in state anxiety in both intervention groups was statistically significant ( p

Auricular Acupuncture and biomedical research a promising sino austrian research cooperation
Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine, 2015Co-Authors: Peijing Rong, Jingjun Zhao, Shaoyuan Li, Yuqing Li, Daniela Litscher, Ingrid Gaischek, Xu Zhai, Lu Wang, Gerhard LitscherAbstract:Treatment by Auricular Acupuncture has a long history. Ear-acupoint research has been advancing step by step in China and also in Europe. Auricles are rich in nerves, therefore a close relationship with different functions of the human body has been proved by the research teams of the two main authors of this article from China and Austria. In recent years, great progress has been made in the research of regulating human body functions through electroAcupuncture at the Auricular branch of the vagus nerve, which is part of Auricular Acupuncture therapy. It is well known that the Auricular branch of the vagus nerve is the only peripheral pathway to the cerebral cortex. Studies of the Chinese team on hypertension, diabetes, epilepsy and depression have shown that the mechanism of Auricular vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) may be comparable with cervical VNS in terms of pathways. Auricular VNS has a broad clinical application prospect.

Auricular Acupuncture with laser
Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2013Co-Authors: Regina Round, Gerhard Litscher, Frank BahrAbstract:Auricular Acupuncture is a method which has been successfully used in various fields of medicine especially in the treatment of pain relief. The introduction of lasers especially low-level lasers into medicine brought besides the already existing stimulation with needles and electricity an additional technique to Auricular Acupuncture. This literature research looks at the historical background, the development and the anatomical and neurological aspects of Auricular Acupuncture in general and Auricular laser Acupuncture in detail. Preliminary scientific findings on Auricular Acupuncture with laser have been described in detail and discussed critically in this review article. The results of the studies have shown evidence of the effect of Auricular laser Acupuncture. However, a comparison of these studies was impossible due to their different study designs. The most important technical as well as study parameters were described in detail in order to give more sufficient evidence and to improve the quality of future studies.

Auricular Acupuncture may suppress epileptic seizures via activating the parasympathetic nervous system a hypothesis based on innovative methods
Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2012Co-Authors: Wei He, Peijing Rong, Liang Li, Gerhard LitscherAbstract:Auricular Acupuncture is a diagnostic and treatment system based on normalizing the body's dysfunction. An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that Auricular Acupuncture has a significant effect on inducing parasympathetic tone. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder consisting of recurrent seizures resulting from excessive, uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. Autonomic imbalance demonstrating an increased sympathetic activity and a reduced parasympathetic activation is involved in the development and progress of epileptic seizures. Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system such as vagus nerve stimulation has been used for the treatment of intractable epilepsy. Here, we propose that Auricular Acupuncture may suppress epileptic seizures via activating the parasympathetic nervous system.

Auricular Acupuncture for dental anxiety a randomized controlled trial
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 2007Co-Authors: Matthias Karst, M Winterhalter, Sinikka Munte, Boris Francki, Apostolos Hondronikos, Andre Eckardt, Hartmut Buhck, Michael Bernateck, Matthias FinkAbstract:Auricular Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for acute anxiety, but there is a lack of direct comparisons of Acupuncture to proven standard drug treatments. In this study we compared the efficacy of Auricular Acupuncture with intranasal midazolam, placebo Acupuncture, and no treatment for red
