    Abstract:

    During gastrointestinal digestion or food processing of proteins, small Peptides can be released and may act as regulatory compounds with hormone-like activities. Numerous biologically active Peptides (Bioactive Peptides) have been identified. Most Bioactive Peptides are derived from milk and dairy products, with the most common being angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory Peptides. Soybean protein and soybean derived Peptides also play an important role in soybean physiological activities, particularly those related to the prevention of chronic diseases. However, the Bioactive potential of soybean derived Bioactive Peptides is yet to be fully appreciated. After a general introduction of approaches and advances in Bioactive Peptides from food sources, this review focuses on Bioactive Peptides derived from soybean proteins and their physiological properties. Technological approaches to generate Bioactive Peptides, their isolation, purification, characterization, and quantification, and further application in food and drug design are also presented. Safety concerns, such as potential toxicity, allergenicity, and sensory aspect of these Peptides are likewise discussed.

    Abstract:

    Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major metabolic, multi-causal and heterogeneous disorder, characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia, which causes significant morbidity and mortality, with a considerable burden on health-care resources. The number of deaths due to T2DM highlights the importance of controlling the disease and its complications. It has been demonstrated that some proteins, protein hydrolysates, Bioactive Peptides and amino acids can control glucose levels directly or indirectly. Bioactive Peptides have been identified in a range of food ingredients and offer the potential for incorporation into functional and nutraceutical foods. In this review, we discuss the possible mechanisms by which these compounds exert their action on glucose control such as modulating insulin production, incretin secretion, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibition, regulation of glucose uptake in peripheral tissue and inhibition of some enzymes related with glucose absorption. Peptides such as IPAVF, PGVGGPLGPIGPCYE, CAYQWQRPVNRIR, PACGGFYISGRPG, WV, GPAE, GPGA, LP, IP, KLPGF and LI have shown potential for regulating blood glucose. Bioavailability and delivery of Bioactive Peptides are also discussed.

    There is an urgent treat of numerous chronic diseases including heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, which have a significant influence on the health of people worldwide. In addition to numerous preventive and therapeutic drug treatments, important advances have been achieved in the identification of Bioactive Peptides that may contribute to long-term health. Although Bioactive Peptides with various biological activities received unprecedented attention, as a new source of Bioactive Peptides, the significant role of Bioactive Peptides from traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese food has not fully appreciated compared to other Bioactive components. Hence, identification and bioactivity assessment of these Peptides could benefit the pharmaceutical and food industry. Furthermore, the functional properties of Bioactive Peptides help to demystify drug properties and health benefits of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese food. This paper reviews the generation and biofunctional properties of various Bioactive Peptides derived from traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese food. Mechanisms of digestion, bioavailability of Bioactive Peptides and interactions between traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese food are also summarized in this review.
