    Abstract:

    The phylogenetic systematics of bovin species forms a common basis for studies at multiple scales, from the level of domestication in populations to major cladogenesis. The main big-picture accomplishments of this productive field, including two recent works, one in BMC Genomics, are reviewed with an eye for some of the limitations and challenges impeding progress. Recent years have seen a flurry of interest and inquiry into the evolutionary history of Bovini, the clade comprising living oxen (genus Bos) and the living buffaloes (genera Syncerus and Bubalus). A disproportionate interest in the phylogenetics of Bovini, relative to other bovid or ruminant clades, no doubt stems from the importance of bovins as a prime source of human sustenance since at least the Pleistocene. In addition, bovins are widespread (naturally occurring on four continents), ecologically differentiated with wide habitat tolerances (Figure 1), taxonomically diverse (around a dozen living species and over 50 fossil), and, given their large size and affinity for wet habitats, possess a high potential for preservation in the fossil record. For these reasons, the evolutionary record of Bovini provides an exemplary resource for studies on evolutionary patterns and processes. One avenue of research that has been continuously providing new information, from Miocene higher clade origins to Holocene population dynamics, has been the analysis of bovin genomes.     Abstract The earliest Bovini have until now been reported from between 7 and 6 Ma from Africa. It has long been known that Bovini originated from “Boselaphini”, a paraphyletic assemblage of early Bovinae including also the living nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) and chousinga (Tetracerus quadricornis). This paper constitutes the first report that 1) the earliest members of the bovine lineage are present by at least 8.9 Ma; 2) that the origins of this clade (Pan–Bovini) appear to be in Asia south of the Himalayas; 3) that bovines represent a boselaphine lineage that expanded the ancestral dietary niche to include roughage in more open environments; and 4) that this clade's diversification and range extension coincided with global vegetation changes in the latest Miocene. These assessments are based on the description and analysis of new fossil dental material of certain late Miocene “Boselaphini”, including material traditionally assigned to Selenoportax and Pachyportax. It is proposed that the evolution of the large body size and robust dentition characteristic of bovines was driven by climatic and environmental changes, namely an intensification of seasonal aridity in southern Asia during the early late Miocene. Adaptations for a coarser diet would have permitted greater niche separation among large herbivores during dry seasons when commonly preferred food items become scarce.

    Summary The paper deals with a case of thymic lymphosarcoma showing a negative serological response to Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) antigens and discovered in a herd with a high incidence of enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL). If it is speculated that BLV played a role, one must consider the hypothesis of the transmission of either complete virus particles or part of the viral genome. If one considers that BLV did not play a role, then we have to do either with a coincidence, or with a common inducing factor, different from BLV, acting on predisposed animals. Study of the literature seems to indicate that there is apparently an antagonism between the enzootic form of leukosis and thymic lymphosarcoma. Indeed, cases of thymic leukosis are predominant in some countries and rare or absent in others. As the sick animal was a twin, the role of the twin pregnancy is also examined. All the hypotheses are discussed. Zusammenfassung Ein Fall von Thymus-Lymphosarkom beim Rind ohne Beziehung zu bovinem Leukaemievirus-Antigen in einer stark mit boviner Rinderleukose verseuchten Herde Die Arbeit handelt von einem Fall mit Thymus-Lymphosarkom, der gegen Rinderleukaemievirus (BLV)-Antigen serologisch negativ reagierte und in einer Herde mit hohem Anteil von enzootischer Rinderleukose (EBL) ermittelt wurde. Nimmt man an, das dabei das BLV eine Rolle spielte, mus die Hypothese in Betracht gezogen werden, das entweder komplette Viruspartikel ubertragen werden oder Teile des Virusgenoms. Ginge man aber davon aus, das BLV spielt keine Rolle, dann durfte entweder lediglich ein Zusammentreffen oder aber ein gemeinsamer induzierender Faktor, der auf pradisponierte Tiere wirkt, aber mit dem BLV nichts zu tun hat, vorliegen. Nach Auswertung der Literatur scheint ein Antagonismus zwischen der enzootischen Form der Leukose und dem Thymuslymphosarkom zu bestehen. In der Tat herrschen Falle von Thymusleukose in einigen Landern vor wahrend sie in anderen selten sind oder fehlen. Da das erkrankte Tier ein Zwilling war wurde die Bedeutung der Zwillingstrachtigkeit ebenfalls untersucht. Alle Hypothesen werden diskutiert. Si l'on suppose que le virus BLV a joue un role il faut considerer les hypotheses qui envisagent la transmission, soit d'une particule virale complete, soit d'une partie du genome viral. Si, par contre, on admet que le virus BLV n'a joue aucun role, on a alors affaire, soit a une coincidence, soit a un facteur inducteur commun, different du virus BLV, agissant sur des animaux predisposes. Si se supone que el VLB jugaba aqui cierto papel, hay que considerar las hipotesis que o bien se transmiten particulas virosicas completas o bien partes del genoma virosico. Si se partiera del hecho de que el VLB no juega ningun papel, entonces deberia tratarse bien solo de una coincidencia o bien de un factor inductor comun, que nada tendria que ver con el VLB, el cual actuaria sobre los animales predispuestos. Tras la inter-pretacion de la bibliografia, parece ser que existe un antagonismo entre la forma enzootica de la leucosis y el linfosarcoma timico. En efecto, la leucosis timica predomina en algunos paises, mientras que en otros es rara o inexistente. Como el animal enfermo era un gemelo, tambien se estudio el papel de la gestacion gemelar. Se comentan todas estas hipotesis.

    Summary In this study, the authors searched for antibodies directed against the main glycoprotein of bovine leukemia virus (BLV gp 70). An agar-gel immunodiffusion test was applied to the sera of 245 animals from 5 leukemic herds. The results are compared to those obtained previously using various tests applied to the same animals, namely: - an hematological test based on the number of lymphocytes (key of Gottingen); - an immunodiffusion test, using BLV p 24 antigen; - a complement fixation test, using a crude antigen prepared from the supernatant of fetal lamb kidney cell cultures infected by BLV. They conclude that the immunodiffusion test based on BLV gp 70 is the most simple and sensitive test presently available to detect antibody carriers among cattle herds. Zusammenfassung Vergleich von 4 Methoden zur Diagnose der enzootischen Rinderleukose Mit Hilfe des Agargel-Immunodiffusionstestes sind 245 Rinderseren aus 5 mit Leukose behafteten Herden auf das Vorkommen von Antikorpern gegenuber dem Glykoprotein 70 des bovinen Leukosevirus untersucht worden. Aus dem Vergleich der Ergebnisse mit solchen, die fruher mit anderen Untersuchungsmethoden (Lymphocytenzahlung, Immunodiffusionstest mit p 24 Antigen, Komplementbindungsreaktion mit Leukosevirus-Zellkulturantigen) erzielt worden waren, wird geschlossen, das der Immunodiffusionstest mit Glykoprotein 70 derzeit der einfachste und empfindlichste Test zur Ermittlung von Leukosevirus-Antikorpertragern ist. Resumen Comparacion de cuatro metodos para el diagnostico de la leucosis bovina enzootica Con ayuda de la prueba de inmunodifusion en agar coloidal se examinaron 245 sueros sanguineos vacunos de 5 explotaciones afectadas de leucosis en cuanto a la presencia de anticuerpos frente a la glucoproteina 70 del virus de la leucosis bovina. De la comparacion de los resultados con los obtenidos antes con otras tecnicas laboratorio (recuento de linfocitos, prueba de inmunodifusion con antigeno p 24, reaccion de fijacion del complemento con antigeno celulocultural de virus de la leucosis), se saca en conclusion que la prueba de inmunodifusion con glucoproteina 70 ts actualmente la tecnica mas simple y sensible para descubrir los portadores de anticuerpos frente al virus de la leucosis.

    Summary An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) involving a monoclonal antibody was used for the detection of antibodies against bovine leukemia virus antigens in an infected herd and in sera collected in 19 EBL-free herds. The ELISA was compared with the classical agar-gel immunodiffusion test (AGID). Both techniques give similar acceptable results with sera. The choice of which of the two methods to use for large scale survey on sera will depend on the availability, cost and simplicity of the test proposed. To check dairy cows using milk samples, the ELISA only is suitable. Zusammenfassung Anwendung eines ELISA mit monoklonalen Antikorpern zum Nachweis von Antikorpern gegen bovines Leukamie-Virus in einer Herde mit haufigem Vorkommen von enzootischer boviner Leukose Ein enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) mit monoklonalen Antikorpern wurde zum Nachweis von Antikorpern gegen bovines Leukamievirus-Antigen in einer infizierten Herde und in Seren aus 19 EBL-freien Herden verwendet. Der ELISA wurde mit dem klassischen Agar-Gel-Immunodiffusionstest (AGID) verglichen. Mit Seren ergaben beide Techniken vergleichbar akzeptable Ergebnisse. Welche der beiden Methoden fur Reihenuntersuchungen mit einer grosen Anzahl von Seren verwendet wird, ist abhangig von der Verfugbarkeit, den Kosten und der einfachen Durchfuhrbarkeit des Tests. Zur Untersuchung von Milchproben ist nur der ELISA geeignet. El ELISA se comparo con la prueba clasica de inmunodifusion en gelosa de agar (AGID). Ambas tecnicas dieron resultados aceptables y comparables. La eleccion de la tecnica a utilizar dependera de la disponibilidad, de las costas y de la simplicidad de empleo en los examenes seriados. Para el analisis de las muestras de leche solo resulta apropiado el ELISA.

    Resumo: O Vírus Respiratório Sincicial Bovino (BRSV) é uma causa importante de doença respiratória em bovinos. O BRSV é um membro da família Paramyxoviridae, subfamília Pneumovirinae, pertencendo ao gênero Pneumovirus. Nos últimos quinze anos, evidências sorológicas e de isolamento do vírus revelaram que o BRSV está circulando no Brasil, causando doença clinicamente evidente ou formas subclínicas da infecção. Na primeira parte do presente trabalho, seis diferentes linhagens celulares foram examinadas quanto a sua susceptibilidade à infecção pelo BRSV, levando em conta a variabilidade entre diferentes isolados e características de crescimento do vírus. Chicken embryo related cells (CER), e células CRIB (MDBK-resistentes à infecção pelo Vírus da Diarréia Viral Bovina, BVDV) foram as mais apropriadas à multiplicação do vírus.     Bovine milk is one of the main foods for mammals and, specifically, for humans; therefore, its quality should be optimal and should comply with all safety and nutritional aspects. The objective of this review was to collect updated scientific information on the importance of the presence of flavonoids in bovine milk, regarding their nutritional value and the benefits of these metabolites for the milk and its consumers. Milk decomposition is due to the effect of light, temperature and time on the fat and protein present in it, as well as to lactic fermentation by bacteria. Thus, the control of these three factors or one of them contributes to extend the useful life of milk and other dairy products. Thus, by seeking to delay the rancidification of milk and its by-products, it has been proposed that forage containing antioxidants such as flavonoids should be included in the diet of female cattle, as these, being bioavailable in cattle, also actively appear in the milk in concentrations equivalent to plasma. Additionally, the presence of flavonoids in bovine milk can provide a source of natural antioxidants for the consumer, which is beneficial for the prevention of some pathological processes mediated by free radicals.La leche bovina constituye uno de los principales alimentos para los mamíferos y, específicamente, para el ser humano; por ello su calidad debe ser óptima y cumplir con todos los aspectos nutricionales y de inocuidad. El objetivo de esta revisión fue recopilar información científica actualizada sobre la importancia de la presencia de flavonoides en la leche bovina, respecto a su valor nutricional y los beneficios que estos metabolitos traen para la leche y el consumidor. La descomposición de la leche está dada por el efecto de la luz, la temperatura y el tiempo sobre la grasa y las proteínas presentes en esta, así como por la fermentación láctica realizada por las bacterias. De esa manera, el control de los tres factores o de uno de ellos contribuye a prolongar la vida útil de la leche y demás productos lácteos. Así, se pudo determinar que buscando retardar el enranciamiento de la leche y de sus subproductos, se ha propuesto incluir forrajes que contengan sustancias antioxidantes como los flavonoides en la ración de las hembras bovinas en producción, que siendo biodisponibles en la especie, también salen en la leche en forma activa y en concentraciones equivalentes a las plasmáticas. Adicionalmente, la presencia de flavonoides en la leche bovina puede aportar una fuente de antioxidantes naturales para el consumidor, lo cual constituye un efecto benéfico para la prevención de algunos procesos patológicos mediados por radicales libres.O leite bovino constitui um dos principais alimentos para os mamíferos e, especificamente, para o ser humano; por isso sua qualidade deve ser ótima e também cumprir com todos os aspectos nutricionais e de inocuidade. Dessa maneira, o controle dos três fatores ou de um deles contribui a prolongar a vida útil do leite e dos outros produtos lácteos. Assim, foi possível determinar que buscando retardar a rançagem do leite e de seus subprodutos, propuseram incluir forragens que contenham substâncias antioxidantes como os flavonoides na ração das fêmeas bovinas em produção, que sendo bio disponíveis na espécie, também saem no leite em forma ativa e em concentrações equivalentes às plasmáticas. Adicionalmente, a presença de flavonoides no leite bovino pode fornecer uma fonte de antioxidantes naturais para o consumidor, o que constitui um efeito benéfico para a prevenção de alguns processos patológicos mediados por radicais livres.La leche bovina constituye uno de los principales alimentos para los mamíferos y, específicamente, para el ser humano; por ello su calidad debe ser óptima y cumplir con todos los aspectos nutricionales y de inocuidad. El objetivo de esta revisión fue recopilar información científica actualizada sobre la importancia de la presencia de flavonoides en la leche bovina, respecto a su valor nutricional y los beneficios que estos metabolitos traen para la leche y el consumidor. La descomposición de la leche está dada por el efecto de la luz, la temperatura y el tiempo sobre la grasa y las proteínas presentes en esta, así como por la fermentación láctica realizada por las bacterias. De esa manera, el control de los tres factores o de uno de ellos contribuye a prolongar la vida útil de la leche y demás productos lácteos. Así, se pudo determinar que buscando retardar el enranciamiento de la leche y de sus subproductos, se ha propuesto incluir forrajes que contengan sustancias antioxidantes como los flavonoides en la ración de las hembras bovinas en producción, que siendo biodisponibles en la especie, también salen en la leche en forma activa y en concentraciones equivalentes a las plasmáticas. Adicionalmente, la presencia de flavonoides en la leche bovina puede aportar una fuente de antioxidantes naturales para el consumidor, lo cual constituye un efecto benéfico para la prevención de algunos procesos patológicos mediados por radicales libres
