Five pelleted wheat-based diets containing 0, 50, 100, 150 or 200 g Canola Meal/kg were formulated to contain 9.74 MJ net energy (NE)/kg and 1.21 g standardised ileal digestible (SID) lysine/MJ NE and were fed for 4 wk starting 1 wk after weaning at 19 days of age. Canola Meal was added at the expense of soybean Meal and the diets were balanced for NE using Canola oil and for amino acids using crystalline lysine, threonine and tryptophan. Increasing inclusion of Canola Meal reduced linearly (P<0.05) the apparent total tract digestibility of energy, dry matter and crude protein and quadrati- cally (P<0.05) the digestible energy content of diets. From 0 to 28 days on trial, increasing inclusion of Canola Meal did not affect body weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency. In conclusion, up to 200 g solvent-extracted Canola Meal/kg can replace soybean Meal in diets formulated to equal NE and SID amino acid content and fed to weaned pigs without detrimental effects on growth performance.

Animal Feed Science and Technology, 2016Co-Authors: N W Jaworski, O J Rojas, H H SteinAbstract:Two experiments were conducted to determine digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) and the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein and amino acids in high protein Canola Meal (CM-HP), conventional Canola Meal (CM-CV), and soybean Meal fed to growing pigs. In Exp. 1, 32 barrows (initial body weight: 47.3 ± 6.2 kg) were housed in metabolism cages and randomly allotted to one of four diets with eight replicate pigs per diet. A corn-based diet (973 g/kg corn) and three diets that contained both corn and each of the two sources of Canola Meal or soybean Meal were formulated. Feces and urine were collected for 5 days after a 5-day adaptation period. The DE and ME values were 14.40 and 13.84 MJ/kg in corn, 12.43 and 10.34 MJ/kg in CM-HP, 11.02 and 9.65 MJ/kg in CM-CV, and 15.63 and 14.13 MJ/kg in soybean Meal, respectively. The DE and ME were greater (P < 0.05) in corn and soybean Meal than in CM-HP and CM-CV, but the DE and ME were not different between CM-HP and CM-CV. In Exp. 2, eight barrows (initial body weight: 46.4 ± 5.6 kg) were equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum and randomly allotted to a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 4 diets and 4 periods in each square. A N-free diet and three cornstarch based diets that contained CM-HP, CM-CV, or soybean Meal as the sole source of amino acids were formulated. Each period lasted 7 days and ileal digesta were collected on day 6 and 7 of each period. The AID and SID of crude protein and most amino acids in CM-HP and CM-CV were less (P < 0.05) than in soybean Meal. The AID and SID of crude protein in CM-HP was greater (P < 0.05) than in CM-CV. However, no differences were observed in AID and SID of any amino acids between CM-HP and CM-CV. The concentration of standardized ileal digestible crude protein and almost all amino acids was greater (P < 0.05) in soybean Meal than in CM-HP and CM-CV, and CM-HP contained more (P < 0.05) standardized ileal digestible crude protein and amino acids than CM-CV. In conclusion, increased concentration of crude protein in Canola Meal does not compromise the concentration of DE and ME, and does not compromise AID or SID of amino acids. As a consequence, the novel CM-HP supplies the same amount of DE and more digestible amino acids for growing pigs compared with CM-CV.

In Exp. 1, 40 barrows (51.5 ± 4.0 kg initial BW) were housed in metabolism cages and randomly allotted to 1 of 5 diets with 8 replicate pigs per diet. A corn-based diet (97.4% corn) and 4 diets that contained both corn and each of the 3 sources of Canola Meal or SBM were formulated. Feces and urine were collected for 5 d after a 5-d adaptation period. The DE and ME were 3,347 and 3,268 kcal/kg in corn, 3,312 and 2,893 kcal/kg in CM-HP1, 3,627 and 3,346 kcal/kg in CM-HP2, 2,798 and 2,492 kcal/kg in CM-CV, and 4,000 and 3,796 kcal/kg in SBM, respectively. Values for DE and ME were greater (P< 0.05) in SBM than in all other ingredients, but DE and ME were greater (P < 0.05) in corn and the 2 high-protein Canola Meals than in CM-CV. The DE and ME were also greater (P< 0.05) in CM-HP2 than in CM-HP1. In Exp. 2, 10 barrows (65.3 ± 10.4 kg initial BW) were equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum and randomly allotted to a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design with 5 diets and 5 periods in each square. A N-free diet and 4 corn starch-based diets that contained CM-HP1, CM-HP2, CM-CV, or SBM as the sole source of AA were formulated. Each period lasted 7 d and ileal digesta were collected on d 6 and 7 of each period. The SID of CP and all AA except Pro were greater (P < 0.05) in SBM than in the 3 sources of Canola Meal. With the exception of His and Lys, no differences in SID of indispensable AA were observed among the 3 sources of Canola Meal. The SID of His and Lys were greater (P < 0.05) in CM-HP1 and CM-HP2 than in CM-CV and the SID of CP was greater (P < 0.05) in CM-HP2 than in CM-CV, but no differences in the SID of indispensable AA were observed between CM-HP1 and CM-HP2. In conclusion, the 2 high-protein Canola Meals used in this experiment have ME values that are not different from corn but greater than in CM-CV. The SID of most AA is greater in SBM than in Canola Meals, but SID of His and Lys are greater in high-protein Canola Meals than in CM-CV. As a consequence, high-protein Canola Meals supply more ME and SID of AA for growing pigs than CM-CV.

Soybean Meal was replaced with 0 (control), 33, 66, or 100% of both types of Canola Meal. Left side bellies from 70 carcasses were randomly assigned to conventional or dry cure treatment and matching right side bellies were assigned the opposite treatment. Secondary objectives were to test the existence of bilateral symmetry on fresh belly characteristics and fatty acid profiles of right and left side bellies originating from the same carcass. Bellies from pigs fed CM-HP were slightly lighter and thinner than bellies from pigs fed CM-CV, yet bacon processing, bacon slice, and sensory characteristics were unaffected by dietary treatment and did not differ from the control. Furthermore, testing the existence of bilateral symmetry on fresh belly characteristics revealed that bellies originating from the right side of the carcasses were slightly (P ≤ 0.05) wider, thicker, heavier and firmer than bellies from the left side of the carcass.

The second objective was to develop regression equations to predict the concentration of SID AA from the nutrient composition of Canola Meal. Ten growing pigs (initial body weight: 26.5 ± 0.7 kg) were surgically equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum and allotted to a replicated 5 × 5 Latin square design with 5 diets and 5 periods in each square. One batch of Canola Meal was divided into 4 batches that were either not autoclaved or autoclaved at 130 °C for 20, 30, or 45 min. Four diets were formulated with Canola Meal being the only source of AA and CP in each diet. A N-free diet also was formulated and used to determine the basal endogenous losses of CP and AA in the pigs. The AID of CP and all AA was reduced (quadratic, P r 2 = 0.96). Likewise, the concentrations of SID AA for most AA may be predicted from the nutrient composition of Canola Meal. In conclusion, heat damage reduces both the concentration and the digestibility of AA in Canola Meal. Regression equations developed in this experiment may be used to predict the concentration of SID AA in Canola Meal.

In Exp. 1, six ileal-cannulated barrows (36 kg of BW) were fed at 3× maintenance either a 44% EP Canola Meal diet or a N-free diet in a crossover design to measure energy and AA digestibility and calculate standardized ileal digestible (SID) AA and NE content, with 6 observa- tions per diet. Each period consisted of a 5-d diet ad- aptation and a 2-d feces and 3-d digesta collection. The EP Canola Meal contained (% of DM) 38.5% CP, 13.3% ether extract, 2.42% Lys, 1.54% Thr, 0.62% Met, and 23.2 µmol/g of glucosinolates. Apparent total tract en- ergy digestibility was 75.0% and the DE and predicted NE content were 3.77 and 2.55 Mcal/kg (in DM), re- spectively. The SID AA content (% of DM) was 1.77% Lys, 1.04% Thr, and 0.52% Met. In Exp. 2, a total of 1,100 pigs (25 kg of BW) housed in 50 pens were fed 5 dietary regimens with 0, 7.5, 15, and 22.5% or decreas- ing amounts (22.5, 15, 7.5, and 0%, respectively) of EP Canola Meal over 4 phases to validate performance and carcass characteristics. Diets were formulated to con- tain equal NE:SID Lys for each growth phase (g/Mcal; 4.04, d 0 to 25; 3.63, d 26 to 50; 3.23, d 51 to 77; 2.83, d 78 to 90). At slaughter, carcass characteristics were measured for all pigs, and jowl fat was sampled for 2 pigs per pen. For d 51 to 90, the 22.5% EP Canola Meal regimen was reduced to 18% (22.5/18%) because of de- creased ADFI in phases 1 and 2. Overall (d 0 to 90), increasing dietary EP Canola Meal linearly decreased (P < 0.001) ADG and ADFI and linearly increased (P < 0.01) G:F. For 0 and 22.5/18% EP Canola Meal, respec- tively, ADG was 978 and 931 g/d, ADFI was 2.77 and 2.58 kg/d, and G:F was 0.366 and 0.378. Increasing di- etary EP Canola Meal did not alter the carcass backfat thickness, loin depth, or jowl fat fatty acid profile. Pigs fed 22.5/18% EP Canola Meal reached slaughter weight 3 d after (P < 0.05) pigs fed 0% EP Canola Meal. In summary, EP Canola Meal provided adequate energy and AA; however, ADG was reduced by 3 g/d per 1% of EP Canola Meal inclusion, likely because of increased dietary glucosinolates. Thus, the amount of EP Canola Meal included in swine diets should be targeted to an expected growth performance and carcass quality. Fi- nally, diets formulated to contain an equal NE and SID AA content did not entirely eliminate the risks for re- duced growth performance associated with inclusion of an alternative feedstuff.

The value of true protein digested in the intestine predicted by the DVE/OEB system was 153 g/kg DM, which was similar with that in Canola Meal, and B. carinata Meal had a positive degraded protein balance (248 g/kg DM). In conclusion, B. carinata Meal had similar characteristics on most of parameters related to rumen degradation, total digestion and metabolizable protein supply with Canola Meal.

Canola's industrial processing generally involves separation of the seed into an oil and a Meal fraction whereas the intermediate product is called presscake. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of processing conditions on the nutritive value for ruminants and compare the yellow (Brassica juncea) (CM_Y) and the brown-seeded (B. napus) (CM_B) Canola Meal and the brown-seeded (B. napus) (CPC_B) Canola presscake. Results Either extract was higher (P < 0.05) for CPC_B than for CM_Y and CM_B. CM_Y had a higher (P < 0.05) PB2 and PC compared to CM_B. Truly digestible fractions, except fatty acid, were lower (P < 0.05) for CPC_B. Effective protein degradability of CM_Y was lower (P < 0.05) compared to CM_B or CPC_B. In vitro protein intestinal digestibility for CM_Y was higher (P < 0.05) than for CM_B or CPC_B. Conclusion CPC_B had lower protein but higher oil content than Canola Meal and is a potential high-energy supplement source for ruminants. CM_Y had higher crude protein, digestible and metabolizable energy values and low fiber than CM_B. In plant breeding, selection programs are geared towards yellow-seeded varieties in order to improve the nutritive value of Canola Meal.© 2012 Society of Chemical Industry

The objective of this study was to evaluate the fiber-protein fraction by examining the chemical profiles, rumen degradation, and intestinal digestive characteristics and determining the nutritive value of the fiber-protein fraction as dietary components for dairy cattle in comparison with commercial Canola Meal and soybean Meal. Available energy values were estimated based on National Research Council guidelines, whereas total true protein content potentially absorbable in the small intestine (DVE) were predicted using the predicted DVE/degraded protein balance (OEB) model. The results show that fiber-protein was a highly fibrous material [neutral detergent fiber (NDF): 556; acid detergent fiber (ADF): 463; acid detergent lignin: 241g/kg of dry matter (DM)] compared with Canola Meal (NDF: 254; ADF: 212; acid detergent lignin: 90g/kg of DM) due to the presence of a higher level of seed hulls in fiber-protein. Compared with Canola Meal, fiber-protein contained 90g/kg of DM less crude protein (CP), 25% of which consisted of undegradable acid detergent-insoluble CP. Most of the ruminally undegradable nutrient components present in Canola Meal appeared to be concentrated into fiber-protein during the manufacturing process and, as a result, fiber-protein showed a consistently lower effective degradability of DM, organic matter, CP, NDF, and ADF compared with both Canola Meal and soybean Meal. Available energy content in fiber-protein contained two-thirds of that of Canola Meal. The DVE was one-third that of soybean Meal and one-fifth that of Canola Meal [DVE value: 58 vs. 180 (soybean) and 291g/kg of DM (Canola Meal)]. The OEB value of fiber protein was positive and about half of that of soybean and Canola Meal [OEB value: 74 vs. 162 (soybean) and 137g/kg of DM (Canola Meal)]. Fiber-protein can be considered as a secondary source of protein in ruminant feed.

In Exp. 1, six ileal-cannulated barrows (36 kg of BW) were fed at 3× maintenance either a 44% EP Canola Meal diet or a N-free diet in a crossover design to measure energy and AA digestibility and calculate standardized ileal digestible (SID) AA and NE content, with 6 observa- tions per diet. Each period consisted of a 5-d diet ad- aptation and a 2-d feces and 3-d digesta collection. The EP Canola Meal contained (% of DM) 38.5% CP, 13.3% ether extract, 2.42% Lys, 1.54% Thr, 0.62% Met, and 23.2 µmol/g of glucosinolates. Apparent total tract en- ergy digestibility was 75.0% and the DE and predicted NE content were 3.77 and 2.55 Mcal/kg (in DM), re- spectively. The SID AA content (% of DM) was 1.77% Lys, 1.04% Thr, and 0.52% Met. In Exp. 2, a total of 1,100 pigs (25 kg of BW) housed in 50 pens were fed 5 dietary regimens with 0, 7.5, 15, and 22.5% or decreas- ing amounts (22.5, 15, 7.5, and 0%, respectively) of EP Canola Meal over 4 phases to validate performance and carcass characteristics. Diets were formulated to con- tain equal NE:SID Lys for each growth phase (g/Mcal; 4.04, d 0 to 25; 3.63, d 26 to 50; 3.23, d 51 to 77; 2.83, d 78 to 90). At slaughter, carcass characteristics were measured for all pigs, and jowl fat was sampled for 2 pigs per pen. For d 51 to 90, the 22.5% EP Canola Meal regimen was reduced to 18% (22.5/18%) because of de- creased ADFI in phases 1 and 2. Overall (d 0 to 90), increasing dietary EP Canola Meal linearly decreased (P < 0.001) ADG and ADFI and linearly increased (P < 0.01) G:F. For 0 and 22.5/18% EP Canola Meal, respec- tively, ADG was 978 and 931 g/d, ADFI was 2.77 and 2.58 kg/d, and G:F was 0.366 and 0.378. Increasing di- etary EP Canola Meal did not alter the carcass backfat thickness, loin depth, or jowl fat fatty acid profile. Pigs fed 22.5/18% EP Canola Meal reached slaughter weight 3 d after (P < 0.05) pigs fed 0% EP Canola Meal. In summary, EP Canola Meal provided adequate energy and AA; however, ADG was reduced by 3 g/d per 1% of EP Canola Meal inclusion, likely because of increased dietary glucosinolates. Thus, the amount of EP Canola Meal included in swine diets should be targeted to an expected growth performance and carcass quality. Fi- nally, diets formulated to contain an equal NE and SID AA content did not entirely eliminate the risks for re- duced growth performance associated with inclusion of an alternative feedstuff.
