    Abstract:

    This study centres around the way in which firms can enhance alliance performance through the Development of alliance capabilities. Whereas most research has focused on inter-firm antecedents of alliance performance, research on intra-firm antecedents pointing to prior experience and internal mechanisms to foster knowledge transfer has only recently emerged. As little is known about how firms develop alliance capabilities, this study aims to uncover how differences in sources of alliance capabilities explain performance heterogeneity. The data are derived from a detailed survey held among alliance managers and Vice-Presidents of 151 firms. The survey covers over 2600 alliances for the period 1997-2001. This study not only finds that alliance capabilities partially mediate between alliance experience and alliance performance, but also yields novel insights into the micro-level building blocks underlying the process of alliance Capability Development.     Abstract:

    In order to understand differences in alliance performance and rent generation between firms, we conceptually investigate the Capability Development process. Given the increasing importance of alliances as a revenue generator and the concomitant need for firms to optimize their alliance performance, this study uses experience, micro-level mechanisms, routines and capabilities as key ingredients of the Capability Development process. Building on an extensive literature review, a model is introduced which represents the alliance Capability Development process. From this model, three propositions are derived which relate to the role of experience and capabilities (consisting of micro-level mechanisms and routines) in alliance performance. In doing so, we hope to contribute to the understanding of the process underlying the Development of an alliance Capability.

    Abstract:

    This paper investigates the interrelationships between knowledge integration (KI), product innovation and Capability Development to enhance our understanding of the processes and outcomes of Capability Development within firms. One of the critical underlying mechanisms for Capability building identified in the literature is the role of knowledge integration, which operates within innovation projects and contributes to dynamic Capability Development. Findings of this study demonstrate that the emergence of knowledge specialization from the part level up to the architectural level lead to emergence of innovation ecosystem within the auto industry as a response to learning and innovation within the firm.

    Abstract:

    The literature on Capability Development has focussed on either the content or process of Capability Development. Such a partial explanation of the Capability Development phenomenon has created some flaws in the literature. This paper argues that integrating the content and process of Capability Development is the way ahead in theorising in this field. Analysis of the methodological Development in parallel to theory Development reveals the critical role of microprocesses in such integration. To develop an integrative view of Capability Development we propose a conceptualisation of Capability Development processes through internal and external strategic fit and emphasise the role of knowledge and innovation processes. We also argue that a critical realism approach is of high relevance to researching such an integrative view.

    Abstract:

    There is a lack of empirical evidence supporting existing conceptualisations and particularly clarifying the underlying mechanisms involved in the role of dominant firms in industry transformation. This research undertook an in-depth single case study of how a firm managed its knowledge and Capability Development processes to shape the industry architecture to its benefit. We investigated how a dominant firm manipulates the interdependencies with local suppliers and positions itself at higher levels of the industry architecture hierarchy. Findings suggest that such processes take place over the course of several product innovation projects and across different levels of the product architecture. Such findings contribute to helping firms to manage their knowledge and Capability Development processes and transform the industry architecture to their advantage.

    The objective of this paper is to develop insights into firms’ strategic Capability Development processes within product innovation projects. In particular, the research aims at investigating the interactions among product innovation, knowledge processes, and Capability Development within firms. Building on qualitative data from the auto-industry, our analysis reveals that across four product innovation projects, the case company developed architectural knowledge and Capability. Findings reveal that, along with changes at each level of product architecture, “design knowledge” and “design Capability” have been developed at the same level of product architecture, leading to Capability Development at that level. Furthermore, findings suggest that such Capability transformation resulting from knowledge and Capability creation over the course of case projects leads to modularization of product architecture. Overall, the research contributes to identifying and emphasizing the role of micro processes in Capability Development and renewal, which in turn enhances our understanding of strategic Capability Development processes.

    Abstract:

    Purpose This paper investigates the interrelationships between knowledge integration (KI), product innovation and Capability Development to enhance our understanding of how firms can develop Capability at the firm level, which in turn enhances their performance. One of the critical underlying mechanisms for Capability building identified in the literature is the role of knowledge integration, which operates within product innovation projects and contributes to dynamic Capability Development. Therefore, the main research question is “how does the integration of knowledge across product innovation projects lead to the Development of Capability?” Design/methodology/approach We adopted a case-based approach and investigated the case of a successful firm that was able to sustain its performance through a series of product innovation projects. In particular this research focused on the role of KI and firm-level Capability Development over the course of four projects, during which the firm successfully managed the transformation of its product base and renewal of its competitive advantage. For this purpose an in-depth case study of Capability Development was undertaken at the Iran Khodro Company (IKCO), the key player in the Iranian auto industry transformation. Originality/value This research revealed that along with changes at each level of product architecture “design knowledge” and “design Capability” have been developed at the same level of product architecture, leading to Capability Development at that level. It can be argued that along the step by step maturation of radical innovation across the four case projects, architectural knowledge and Capability have been developed at the case company, resulting in the gradual emergence of a modular product and Capability architecture across different levels of product architecture. Such findings basically add to extensive emphasis in the literature on the interrelationship of the concept of modularity with knowledge management and Capability Development. Practical implications Findings of this study indicate that firms manage their knowledge in accordance with the level of specialization in knowledge and Capability. Furthermore, firms design appropriate knowledge integration mechanisms within and among functions in order dynamically align knowledge processes at different levels of the product architecture. Accordingly, the outcomes of this study may guide practitioners in managing their knowledge processes, through dynamically employing knowledge integration modes step-by-step and from the part level to the architectural level of product architecture across a sequence of product innovation projects to encourage learning and radical innovation.

    The purpose of this paper is to evaluate key criteria underpinning network-facilitated green innovation Capability Development in micro-firms.,Micro-firms, those firms with less than ten full-time employees, need to continuously innovate in order to sustain their business in the emerging green economy. This study uses an interpretive multiple case approach to explore micro-firm owner-manager (O/M) green innovation activities, encompassing O/M views on facilitated network engagement in Ireland and Canada over a 12-month period.,The findings show that proactive implementation of green innovation is influenced by the O/M’s natural environment orientation and the potential for economic gain, while facilitated networks provide an additional resource that the O/M can draw from that allows the O/M to test new ideas, comprehend new and existing legislation and identify potential supports in pursuit of green innovation Capability Development within the micro-firm.,This study offers a contribution to knowledge in the areas of green innovation, micro-firm capabilities and facilitated network engagement. However, the sample size is small and distance was a challenge, yet data and case protocols are in place which allow for replication of the study. As the research is embedded in the resource and Capability theories, alternative theoretical frameworks may shed a different light on the research question.,Prior studies have found that facilitated networks have a positive impact on micro-firm sustainability as these networks enhance the firm’s constrained resource base. The proposed framework can be used as a guideline for support organisations including facilitated networks in assisting micro-firms in reaching their green innovation goals and objectives. It can also be used by micro-firms in the attainment of the green innovation Capability.

  • Organizational Identity and Capability Development in Internationalization: Transference, Splicing, and Enhanced Imitation in Tesco’s US Market Entry

    Abstract:

    Entry into international markets is a challenging process that fundamentally tests existing capabilities. During this entry process, Capability gaps arise that need to be bridged to exploit the commercial opportunity and grow the business. Using a global retailer, Tesco plc, as a case study and employing grounded theory Development techniques, we find that in order to achieve growth, two organizational attributes become critical—structural coherence of the firm’s capabilities and organizational identity. We identify three processes of Capability Development during market entry—transference, splicing, and enhanced imitation. Further, actions and processes that maintain or adapt organizational identity serve as a moderator of the relationship between these processes, Capability deployment, and internalization necessary for entry into international markets. We discuss the study’s implications for theories of Capability Development, organizational identity, and foreign market entry.

    Abstract:

    In this article, we explore how new capabilities emerge and solidify in new ventures that are faced with fundamental uncertainty from their environment. To do so, we draw from the organizational and entrepreneurial literature on cognition and capabilities. Using initial qualitative evidence from a multifirm study in the context of new venture internationalization, we develop a cognition-based model of Capability emergence in new ventures. Our findings extend the Capability Development and learning implications of internationalization to the fundamental character of organizing processes in start-ups. Moreover, we derive avenues for future entrepreneurship research on the origins and evolution of capabilities in new ventures.

    Studies invoking a capabilities lens often ascribe deliberateness in organizational decisions to develop new capabilities. Drawing on five longitudinal case studies of large, global firms in the information and communication technology sector, we examine how firms engender cognizance of their future Capability needs in situations characterized by high decision-making uncertainty. We develop a theoretical account of how firms use investments in start-ups to actively engage in experimentation outside organizational boundaries, a learning process which we term as disembodied experimentation. Disembodied experimentation creates awareness of voids in the Capability base of an incumbent and helps to overcome inertial restraints thereby influencing the decision to invest in Capability Development. The relationship between learning from disembodied experimentation and the decision to develop capabilities is moderated by knowledge brokering functions and adaptation complexity.

  • Impact of Growth Opportunities and Competition on Firm-Level Capability Development Trade-offs

    Abstract:

    How should managers prioritize among production, product Development, branding, internationalization, and other capabilities and resources? This question is central to the resource-based view, and the answer depends not only on the direct returns on investment in each Capability but also on the trade-offs in using those returns for future growth or survival in a competitive market. Through simulation experiments, this study examines firm-level Capability Development trade-offs in the context of a firm's market-level competition and growth. It is found that investing in operational capabilities (which enhance short-term performance) gains priority over investing in long-term dynamic capabilities when the operational Capability investment strengthens the reinforcing loop between performance, investment flow, and Capability Development. Such operational Capability investment provides growth opportunities and competitive advantage. Moreover, in strategic competition, firms anticipating rivals' focus on short-term growth need to further ignore dynamic (long-term) Capability building in order to survive. Testable propositions are offered as to how trade-offs between short-term and long-term investments depend on different firm and industry characteristics. The results may explain why short-term-focused firm behavior persists in firms even in the absence of discounting, short-term managerial incentives, decision biases, or learning failures.
