    Abstract:

    The "war against terrorism" was the main argument put forward by the Russian state to justify resuming the war in Chechnya in 1999. The analysis of policies conducted in its name and the effects they produced in Chechnya, on Russian society and its political system, as well as on Russia’s relations with the outside world, reveals how much this fight against terrorism in this country fits within a much broader context. It notably turns out that not only can the international climate reinforce internal objectives defined in a national framework, but also that the evolutions noted in the specific and exacerbated context of the war in Chechnya can shed light on more general tendencies to blur the frontiers between democratic and nondemocratic practices, ordinary justice and exceptional measures.

    The Russia-Chechen wars have had an extraordinarily destructive impact on the communities and on the trajectories of personal lives in the North Caucasus Republic of Chechnya. This book presents in-depth analysis of the Chechen conflicts and their consequences on Chechen society. It discusses the nature of the violence, examines the dramatic changes which have taken place in society, in the economy and in religion, and surveys current developments, including how the conflict is being remembered and how Chechnya is reconstructed and governed.

    Ce texte se fixe pour objectif d’analyser une legende de guerre – celle des femmes snipers qui auraient combattu en Tchetchenie contre les forces russes. Nee dans les troupes russes, accreditee par le pouvoir politique, diffusee par les films et la fiction litteraire, cette legende offre un acces aux imaginaires de guerre et aux representations qui prevalent parmi les troupes qui ont combattu en Tchetchenie, mais plus largement dans la societe russe. Partant de l’idee que cette legende a des significations multiples, dont la conjonction contribue a son succes, on en developpe l’analyse selon trois axes. La legende permet tout d’abord de donner du sens a la guerre en construisant l’image d’une Russie agressee, autour de la figure de la mercenaire balte – les Collants blancs. Elle s’incarne ensuite sur le terrain, repondant a l’experience subjective des soldats en Tchetchenie et permettant aux autorites russes a la fois de designer un ennemi et de justifier les violences. Enfin, la legende permet aux hommes servant en Tchetchenie de construire leur identite masculine dans et par la guerre, face a la menace imaginaire posee par ces femmes ennemies. En filigrane de cette recherche on trouve une interrogation sur ce que l’etude des legendes de guerre peut apporter a la comprehension d’un conflit et sur la maniere dont on peut travailler avec des sources eparses et des temoignages sujets a caution pour construire un objet de recherche. The legend of women snipers who allegedly fought against Russian forces in Chechnya was first fueled by war stories among Russian troops before Russian authorities officially embraced and promoted the narrative. It was eventually disseminated in society through movies and literature. This legend offers insights into the war narratives of Russian troops about the war in Chechnya and its portrayal in Russian society more generally. It consists of different intertwined layers that vary in importance and significance, all of which contribute to its success. Drawing on the figure of the Wight Tight, mythic women mercenaries from the Baltic States, the legend portrays Russia as a victim of an aggression thus legitimizing the war in Chechnya. Additionally, the legend recounts the experience of Russian soldiers, therefore providing grounds for Russian political and military leaders to stigmatise women and justify the violence committed against civilians. Finally, it allows men serving in Chechnya to construct a male identity based on the war experience, which is able to oppose the imaginary threats of these female enemies. The text addresses also the way war legend can help understand armed conflict, and the way scattered sources and questionable testimonies can be turned into an object of research.
