no more Philosophy without cross Cultural Philosophy
Philosophy Compass, 2010Co-Authors: Karsten J StruhlAbstract:Philosophy is a radical inquiry whose task is to interrogate the fundamental assumptions of some given activity, discipline, or set of beliefs. In doing so, philosophical inquiry must attempt to delineate a problem and to develop a method for resolving that problem. However, to be true to its intention, Philosophy must be able to examine not only the object of its inquiry but also its own method of interrogation. To accomplish this task, philosophical inquiry must be able to create a distance not only from the assumptions under investigation but also from its own assumptions, which is to say, that it must be able to raise questions about its own method. This self-reflexivity requires that any given philosophical investigation must be examined from an alternative vantage point. Since the assumptions which inform the inquiry are deeply imbedded within a given culture, immanent critique is insufficient. The only way to step outside the boundaries of these Cultural presuppositions is to reflect on the given problem from the vantage point of another culture’s philosophical tradition. Thus, I argue that philosophical inquiry is unable to go beyond certain limits without being cross-Cultural Philosophy. I illustrate the way in which cross-Cultural Philosophy does this with respect to the problem of the self by placing the Western philosophical approach to this problem in dialogue with the Indian Hindu-Buddhist narrative.

Critical Theory on Daily Life and the Way of Grasping the World——A Commentary on Cultural Philosophy of Returning to Daily Life by Yi Junqing
2020Co-Authors: Xia Zhi-fangAbstract:Professor Yi Junqing proposes the critical theory of daily life, which draws a distinction between daily life and non-daily life, between daily and non-daily thinking, thus providing a new perspective for Cultural and philosophical studies. It has important inspiring significance for deepening humanistic and social studies, for disclosing Cultural crises in the present age and for constructing Cultural Philosophy and promoting ideological progress. However, this theory is inadequately expounded. In fact, daily thinking is "the practice spirit of grasping the world" said by Marx, while non-daily thinking is the way of grasping the world through the scientific spirit, artistic spirit and religious spirit grasp. The two ways are related to each other and thus cannot be separated.

On Tang Junyi's View of Cultural Philosophy
Studies in Culture & Art, 2020Co-Authors: Wu Yan-fAbstract:Heart ontology is the fundamental of all Tang Junyi's academic thought, and his view of Cultural Philosophy is consequently founded on this base.He proposes to set the moral self as the center and metaphysics as a starting point,to study the Chinese history and culture from a philosophical viewpoint,so as to reconstruct and develop the spirit of humanity in the Chinese tradition. He has related the moral self with culture, underlining that all Cultural activities is subject to the moral self.In addition, the moral self constitutes the soul of the various kinds of Cultural awareness. These concepts, being the theoretical foundation and central concept of Tang Junyi's Cultural Philosophy, exit in all of his moral Philosophy, theories of the spirit of humanity, religion and the theories of life, thus enable Tang's system of Cultural Philosophy to embrace more profound and broad contents.Tang's Cultural Philosophy is a transcendental Idealist Philosophy;it has a character of embracing the Idealism in all Chinese,Western and Indian Philosophy, especially the Western modern and contemporary Idealism. Thus,it brings the traditional Chinese study of mind and disposition to a modern phase.
