    Abstract:

    The genus SerratacarusGoff and Whitaker 1984, currently includes only two species, Serratacarus dietzi Goff and Whitaker, 1994 and Serratacarus lasiurus Goff and Whitaker, 1994, which were recorded on cricetid rodents from natural reserve areas of Brazil. Here, we provide a review of the morphological characters for both species and synonymize of the species Trombewingia brasiliensisGoff and Gettinger, 1991 with S. lasiurus. Additionally, we provide new locality records for both species and the first record for S. dietzi on southeastern four-eyed opossum, Philander frenatus Olfers, 1818 (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae).

    The genus Eutrombicula comprises ca. 80 species worldwide, some of which have been reported as causative agents of severe irritation to the host’s skin, known as trombiculiasis. Six species of Eutrombicula have been recorded from Brazil until present, with two reports of humans as hosts. In this study, Eutrombicula tinami (Oudemans) is redescribed and new records for the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and Sao Paulo as well as new parasite-host associations with Columbiformes, Cuculiformes, Passeriformes, Tinamiformes, Carnivora, Didelphimorphia and Lagomorpha are listed. Besides that, a two detailed report cases of trombiculiasis is provided.

    Abstract:

    Northwestern Argentina (NOA) is one of the least studied areas in Argentina with respect to ectoparasites of the order Siphonaptera; previous investigations, until this study, were scarce and specific.  The objective of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of the diversity of siphonaptera that parasitize small mammals from the NOA, emphasizing in their systematics and distribution.  Specimens of fleas collected in several localities of NOA, and stored in the “Annexes” of the Coleccion Mamiferos Lillo, Universidad Nacional de Tucuman, Argentina, were studied.  Fleas were manually removed from the host pelage, fixed in alcohol 70 % and prepared following conventional techniques for later observation under microscope.  For specimen identification, the original descriptions of species and subspecies were reviewed and compared with specimens stored in systematic collections.  Nine families, 22 genera, 53 species, and eight subspecies were recorded.  A new family, a new genus, and three new species are recorded for the first time in Argentina; five species are new for NOA and nine are new to science.  The distribution of 11 species and two subspecies are extended in the NOA, new records are added to different provinces and new flea-hosts associations are reported.  The greatest diversity of fleas in the Yungas is the reflection of one of the areas with the highest biodiversity in the Neotropical region, such as the Yungas forests, which also includes mammals, as sigmodontine rodents and bats among them.  The similarity analysis among eco-regions showed a major faunistic congruence between the Yungas and the Dry Chaco.  The greatest differentiation was given by the High Andes and Puna compared with the other eco-regions, probably because these areas are the least surveyed and with the lowest richness and abundance of small mammal species.  From the total of 82 new flea-host associations, 81 belong to sigmodontine rodent hosts and one to a marsupial.

    Abstract:

    Introduction: Amazonia has a high diversity of marsupials, and while Emmons and Feer (1990) have cited 14 species for the area, 18 years later this number was increased to 28 by Gardner (2008a), a difference related to descriptions and revalidation of several species in recent years. Northeastern Peru is one of the areas with high biodiversity, a “hotspot”. The high diversity of small mammals can be explained by several factors: latitudinal gradient, size of the area, and lack of seasonal precipitations, among others. In this contribution 19 species are cited for the region of Iquitos, 14 collected through field trips and five recorded from the literature. These results confirm the presence of a species that was not known for the country ( Marmosops neblina), and two species (Marmosa regina and Marmosops bishopi) with new records for the area. The results show that the study area is one of the most diverse in South America with respect to marsupials. Material and methods: The specimens were collected between December 2002 and December 2005, at 41 collecting sites along the Iquitos-Nauta Highway. The study was carried out in undisturbed primary and secondary forests, and other rural areas. In total, 18,081 Sherman trap-nights, 19,271 Tomahawk trapnights, and 591 pitfall trap-nights were recorded. External and cranial morphometric data, body mass, sex, and reproductive condition were recorded for all specimens. A key to species is provided including the confirmed and probable species of the area. Species accumulation curves were calculated and plotted using EstimateS 8.2.0. Results: Three hundred and seventy three records were obtained belonging to 14 out of 27 species cited for the area; eight species were collected outside the Iquitos area. Most specimens were collected in primary and secondary forests (123 and 199 specimens respectively), only 49 were captured in other areas. Pitfall traps were the most successful (1.69% capture success), followed by Tomahawk traps (1.29%), and Sherman traps (0.55%). Arboreal traps were more successful than the ground traps, with 4.18% and 0.89% capture success respectively. The species accumulation curve did not reach stability and the estimates calculated are greater than the recorded species. Discussion: During three years of sampling, 14 species were collected, a number that rises to 19 when literature citations for the specific area of Iquitos are considered (and increases to 27 if the area is extended to a 200 km radius around Iquitos). Some species were very abundant (P. opossum, M. nudicaudatus, D. marsupialis, and M. regina), while others were documented by only 1 or 2 records (G. venusta, M. adusta, and P. olrogi). It is evident that the Peruvian Amazon is one of the areas with the highest diversity of marsupials, but further surveys and studies are necessary in order to determine with greater precision the distribution of many species, and to acquire a better understanding of their natural history. More extensive studies of the fauna of the region are required to obtain informational bases that will provide a strong management policy, in order to preserve the species in such a highly fragmented region.

    Historical information shows that South American marsupials are irrelevant hosts for South American hard ticks (Ixodidae Murray) of the genera Haemaphysalis Koch, Rhipicephalus Koch and Dermacentor Koch. Twenty two Amblyomma Koch species were occasionally found on Didelphimorphia Gill, but some records are doubtful (i.e., A. dissimile Koch, 1844) and only A. fuscum Neumann, 1907 appears to be a relevant parasite of this type of host. Twelve species of Ixodes Latreille were determined on these hosts, although one of them, I. longiscutatus Boero, 1944, is probably misidentified. Four species, I. amarali Fonseca, 1935b, I. loricatus Neumann, 1899, I. luciae Senevet, 1940 and I. venezuelensis Kohls, 1953 are usual parasites of Didelphimorphia. These species (I. venezuelensis excluded) have adult ticks feeding mostly on Didelphidae Gray, and sub-adult ticks feeding mostly on Didelphidae and several species of sigmodontine rodents. All parasitic stages of I. venezuelensis were recorded from Didelphimorphia although rodents are also of importance for its life cycle. Records from marsupials and nonmarsupial hosts show that I. amarali is established in eastern Brazil, and I. venezuelensis in Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica. The alleged southernmost record of I. luciae in Central Argentina was found to be erroneous and its southern limit is located in northwestern Argentina and its way northwards includes Bolivia, Peru, western Brazil, French Guiana, Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago, Panama, Guatemala, Belize and southern Mexico with unconfirmed but probably valid records for Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. The distribution of I. loricatus has been historically considered to range from southern Argentina to southern Mexico but southernmost and northernmost records are now considered doubtful along with Venezuelan populations for this tick, while the only records for Panama and Colombia were based on wrong tick identifications. Bona fide populations of I. loricatus range from central-eastern Argentina and southern Uruguay to Paraguay up to north-eastern Brazil. Dromiciops gliroides Thomas, the only member of Microbiotheria Ameghino is the exclusive host of Ixodes neuquenensis Ringuelet, 1947. There is only one record of tick infestation (Ixodes jonesae Kohls, Sonenshine & Clifford, 1969) of Paucituberculata Ameghino, indicating that these marsupials are of no apparent importance for maintenance of South American hard ticks. We speculate that the species of Ixodes feeding on Didelphimorphia and Sigmodontinae Wagner are a clade derived from ancestors feeding exclusively on Didelphidae that radiated after the invasion of South America by Sigmodontinae or their ancestors. Ixodes neuquenensis (established in south-western South America) is considered a relatively new species that radiated from Ixodes parasites of Sigmodontinae invaders in southern South America.

    Abstract:

    The postcranial skeleton of the neotropical living marsupial Glironia venusta is described and compared in a functional framework. Osteological and myological characters of 19 species of living didelphids and some additional placentals were consulted as models to explain functional implications from the morphology. The skeleton of G. venusta provides evidence about locomotory behavior and specific capacities of movements, and reveals patterns comparable to arboreal didelphids and placentals with high capacity to climb. In general terms, G. venusta has few diagnostic characters in the context of the didelphid sample analyzed, which includes representatives of all recognized clades in the family (second sacral not fused to the ilium, humeral greater trochanter well developed, tibia shorter than femur). Most of the postcranial pattern in G. venusta is consistent with arboreal locomotion, but unlike Caluromys and Caluromysiops, it seems to have faster locomotion. The morphology of the vertebral column, at the thoracic and lumbar portions, shows features that allow powerful lateral and sagittal movements during different phases of locomotion. The patterns evidenced in the forelimbs, pelvic girdle, and hindlimbs point to arboreal habits as well, except for some features on the humerus, illium and fibula. Even if most didelphids have been cataloged as generalized with respect to their mode of gait, the skeletal morphology of G. venusta and the high variation existent in further neotropical marsupials with a variety of body sizes, reveal a diverse combination of features associated to specialized capacities of movements.     Abstract Tick-infested bats, rodents and marsupials were captured along the Iquitos-Nauta highway, Loreto Department, in the Peruvian Amazon. The only ticks found on Chiroptera were members of the Ornithodoros hasei (Schulze, 1935) species group, collected from Noctilio albiventris Desmarest, 1818, Rhinophylla pumilio Peters, 1865 and Myotis albescens (E. Geoffroy, 1806). Rhinophylla pumilio is a new host and M. albescens was confirmed as a host for the O. hasei group. Among Rodentia, Oecomys bicolor (Tomes, 1860), Oligoryzomys microtis (Allen, 1916), Hylaeamys perenensis (Allen, 1901) and Hylaeamys yunganus (Thomas, 1902) were infested with larvae (O. bicolor) or nymphs (other three rodents) of Ixodes luciae Senevet, 1940; all are new hosts for I. luciae.     Die Mittelohrelemente Malleus, Incus und Stapes, sowie die Elemente des Innenohrs sind bei allen Säugetieren vorhanden. In älteren Studien war es erforderlich die Gehörknöchelchen, sowie die Innenohrstrukturen, durch Präparation aus dem Schädel zu entfernen, um sie anschließend untersuchen zu können, was jedoch eine Zerstörung des Materials zur Folge hat. Dies ist seit einigen Jahren, mit Hilfe neuer Untersuchungsmethoden, nicht mehr notwendig, da mittels nicht-invasiver mikro-Computertomographie (μCT) und digitaler Rekonstruktion der Daten die hier bearbeiteten Objekte zerstörungsfrei untersucht werden können. Die Mittel- und Innenohrelemente von sieben Beuteltierarten werden rekonstruiert und anschließend untereinander und mit Angaben aus der Literatur verglichen. Der Fokus dieser Arbeit liegt auf der morphologischen Beschreibung mit Einbeziehung einer phylogenetischen und funktionsmorphologischen Betrachtungsweise. Bei der Gestalt des Malleus lassen sich große Unterschiede innerhalb der untersuchten Taxa finden. Alle Vertreter der Didelphimorphia weisen einen typischen „ancestralen Typ“ auf. Die ähnliche Gestalt des Hammers bei Caluromys philander, Caluromys lanatus und Philander opossum können als phylogenetisches Merkmal interpretiert werden. Ebenso besitzt Echymipera kalubu aus der Ordnung Peramelemorphia eine ursprüngliche Malleus-Form, wobei hier Charakteristika eines, in der Literatur als „Mikrotyps“ be-schriebenen Gehörknöchelchens vorliegen. Notoryctes typhlops und Trichosurus vulpecula zeigen einen stark abgewandelten Malleus. Die Inci innerhalb der untersuchten Taxa unterscheidet sich geringfügig untereinander. Ausschließlich Notoryctes typhlops weist eine abgewandelte Form des Ambosses auf. Die untersuchten Stapes zeigen eine diverse Gestaltung, zum Teil eine Columella-ähnliche Form ohne einem Foramen (Notoryctes typhlops und Echymipera kalubu), zum Teil liegen sie zweischenkelig vor. Die eigentümliche Gestalt der Knöchelchen von Notoryctes typhlops liegt vermutlich mit dessen subterraner Lokomotion in Verbindung. Innerhalb der Didelphimorphia zeigen fossoriale Taxa, gegenüber arborealen Vertretern, größere posteriore Bogengänge. Die Verwandtschaft innerhalb dieser Ordnung wird durch eine ähnliche Form der Cochlea unterstützt. Die für Didelphimorphia typische Anzahl von rund 2,5 Schneckenwindungen kann bei allen Vertretern beschrieben werden. 12 Die fossorialen Taxa Bettongia lesueur und Echymipera kalubu weisen einen weiten anterioren Bogengang auf. Die Bogengänge des subterranen Notoryctes typhlops erscheinen deformiert, zeigen jedoch nahezu alle typischen Charakteristika der übrigen untersuchten Australidelphia. Die funktionsmorphologischen Untersuchungen der Innenohrregion rezenter Metatheria lassen Aussagen über unterschiedliche Lokomotionsmodi zu, wobei in dieser Untersuchung der Messparameter „Querschnitt des Bogengangs“ die höchste Wertung und somit den höchsten Einfluss besitzt. Einen geringeren Einfluss besitzen die Parameter „Höhe des Bogengangs“, „Breite des Bogengangs“ sowie „Länge des Bogengangs“. In dieser Unter-suchung ist keine klare Abgrenzung zwischen fossorialen und arborealen Metatheria festzu-stellen. Die arborealen Taxa liegen innerhalb einer eng geschlossen Gruppe positioniert. Jedoch liegt dieser zum großen Teil auch innerhalb des Bereichs der fossorialen Vertreter. Das subterrane Taxon Notoryctes typhlops liegt auf einer isolierten Position. Durch die Integration der funktionsmorphologischen Untersuchungsergebnisse von Rodentia (Eutheria) lässt sich ein Vergleich zwischen Eu- und Metatheria ziehen. Hierbei zeigt sich durch die funktionsmorphologische Untersuchung des Innenohrs eine deutliche phylo-genetische Trennung der beiden Unterklassen. Gleichzeitig wird die Bedeutung des Messparameters „Querschnitt des Bogengangs“, vor allem bei der Zuordnung des arborealen Lokomotionsmodus, unterstrichen. Die in bisherigen Publikationen angewandten Definitionen der Lokomotionsmodi sind bei Beuteltieren zu modifizieren bzw. neu zu definieren. Durch die Eingliederung des „terrestrischen“ Lokomotions-Modus würde sich der große und nicht eindeutig zuzuordnende Bereich der fossorialen Metatheria auflösen. Die eingegliederte Lokomotion „terrestrisch“ betrifft Philander opossum und Echymipera kalubu. Diese Taxa wären nach der Modifikation funktionell deutlich von den arborealen, aber auch von den fossorialen Beuteltieren getrennt
