Investigating the Parasitoid Community Associated with the Invasive Mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis in Southern China.
Insects, 2021Co-Authors: Hua-yan Chen, Hong Pang, Chao-dong Zhu, Yan-zhou ZhangAbstract:The cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is an emerging invasive insect pest in China. Hymenopteran parasitoids are the key organisms for suppressing populations of P. solenopsis in the field, and therefore could be used as biological agents. Accurate identification of the associated parasitoids is the critical step to assess their potential role in biological control. In this study, we facilitated the identification of the parasitoid composition of P. solenopsis using an integrated approach of species delimitation, combining morphology with molecular data. Eighteen Hymenoptera parasitoid species belonging to 11 genera of four families are recognized based on morphological examination and molecular species delimitation of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 (COI) gene and the 28S rDNA using the automatic barcode gap discovery (ABGD) and the Bayesian Poisson tree processes model (bPTP). Among these species, eight species are primary parasitoids with Aenasius arizonensis (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) being the dominant taxon, while the other 10 species are probably hyperparasitoids, with a prevalence of Cheiloneurus nankingensis Li & Xu (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). These results indicate that parasitoid wasps associated with P. solenopsis from China are diverse and the integrated taxonomic approach applied in this study could enhance the accurate identification of these parasitoids that should be assessed in future biological control programs.

The assembled mitogenome is 13,393 bp in length, which contains 33 classical eukaryotic mitochondrial genes with three tRNA genes and rrnS gene missing. All the 13 PCGs begin with typical ATN codons. The 19 detected tRNAs range from 58 to 70 bp in length with typical cloverleaf structure except for trnS1, whose dihydrouridine (DHU) arm forms a simple loop. Meanwhile, they have six tRNAs inserted between nad2 and nad3 compared with Encyrtus infelix. Phylogenetic analysis highly supported the monophyly of Pteromalidae. Eupelmidae and Encyrtidae have a close relationship. Within Encyrtidae, Platencyrtus parkeri Feriere and Encyrtus infelix are close to each other.

The study was carried out from November 2003 to October 2004. Collections using Malaise trapping were made during 5 days of every month. A total of 52 species, 27 genera and 2 subfamilies were recorded. The subfamily with the largest number of recorded species was Encyrtinae, with 19 genera and 32 species, followed by Tetracneminae, with 8 genera and 20 species. The genus with the largest number of recorded species was Metaphycus with 10. Species richness was analyzed using parametric models; the best-fitting model was the Logarithmic, which is unbounded. Species had low abundance. Species richness and abundance varied with time, with the highest values recorded in the dry season. The fauna of San Javier was more similar to that of Huautla, Morelos, than to that of Huatulco, Oaxaca, both previously studied.Se presentan los resultados del estudio de la fauna de la familia Encyrtidae (avispas parasitoides) en el bosque tropical caducifolio de San Javier, Sonora, México. El estudio se llevó a cabo de noviembre del 2003 a octubre del 2004. Las recolectas se realizaron durante 5 días de cada mes, el método de recolecta fue trampas Malaise. Se registró un total de 52 especies, 27 géneros y 2 subfamilias. El género con mayor número de especies fue Metaphycus con 10. Las recolectas se llevaron a cabo durante 5 días de cada mes. La familia Encyrtidae estuvo representada por 2 subfamilias, 7 tribus, 9 géneros y 17 especies. La tribu con mayor número de géneros y especies fue Anagyrini, con 3 géneros y 3 especies, cada una de las tribus restantes presentaron 1 género y 1 especie. Metaphycus Mercet, 1917 y Rhytidothorx Ashmead, 1900 fueron los géneros con más especies; Ooencyrtus Ashmead, 1900 fue el género más abundante. El valor de riqueza obtenido con los métodos no paramétricos Jacknife 1 y Jacknife 2 fue de 31 y 45, respectivamente. La mayoría de las especies estuvo representada por un solo individuo. Encyrtidae no mostró aparente estacionalidad. Adicionalmente, se recolectaron otras 46 familias del orden Hymenoptera distribuidas en 2 subórdenes y 11 superfamilias. The tribe with the largest number of genera and species was Anagyrini, with 3 genera and 3 species; the remaining tribes were represented by 1 genus and 1 species, respectively. Metaphycus Mercet, 1917 and Rhytidothorx Ashmead, 1900 were the genera with more species; Ooencyrtus Ashmead, 1900 was the most abundant genus. The richness value obtained with the nonparametric methods Jacknife1 and Jacknife 2 was 31 and 45, respectively. Most species were represented by just 1 specimen. An updated checklist of Iranian Encyrtidae (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea).
Zootaxa, 2017Co-Authors: Majid Fallahzadeh, George JaposhviliAbstract:An updated checklist of Iranian Encyrtidae (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea) is presented based on literature records from 1947–2016. The current list includes 159 species representing 48 genera. Parasitoid-host associations in Iran and distributional data are also provided. Twelve encyrtid species (7.55%) are known only from Iran but a high number of species (68 species, 42.77%) are widely distributed in the Palaearctic region. Four species previously listed from Iran, Metaphycus angustifrons Compere, 1957, Homalotylus ephippium (Ruschka, 1923), H. sinensis Xu & He, 1997, and Ooencyrtus kuvanae (Howard, 1910) are no longer considered present. Hosts of Iranian encyrtid species are tabulated by order and family, with the majority being Hemiptera (66.98%), followed by Lepidoptera and Coleoptera (each 9.44%), Diptera (6.60%), Hymenoptera (4.71%) and Neuroptera (2.83%). The majority of Encyrtidae known in Iran are parasitoids of the superfamily Coccoidea (46.22%). Host-plant associations of Iranian Encyrtidae are also tabulated, by plant family.

The species Aenasius bambawalei Hayat is considered as a junior synonym of A. arizonensis (Girault). Nipaecoccus viridis is recorded as a new host for Leptomastix longicornis. In addition, available information for each species and comments on taxonomy, biology, and geographical distribution are included.

The study was carried out from November 2003 to October 2004. Collections using Malaise trapping were made during 5 days of every month. A total of 52 species, 27 genera and 2 subfamilies were recorded. The subfamily with the largest number of recorded species was Encyrtinae, with 19 genera and 32 species, followed by Tetracneminae, with 8 genera and 20 species. The genus with the largest number of recorded species was Metaphycus with 10. Species richness was analyzed using parametric models; the best-fitting model was the Logarithmic, which is unbounded. Species had low abundance. Species richness and abundance varied with time, with the highest values recorded in the dry season. The fauna of San Javier was more similar to that of Huautla, Morelos, than to that of Huatulco, Oaxaca, both previously studied.Se presentan los resultados del estudio de la fauna de la familia Encyrtidae (avispas parasitoides) en el bosque tropical caducifolio de San Javier, Sonora, México. El estudio se llevó a cabo de noviembre del 2003 a octubre del 2004. Las recolectas se realizaron durante 5 días de cada mes, el método de recolecta fue trampas Malaise. Se registró un total de 52 especies, 27 géneros y 2 subfamilias. La subfamilia con el mayor número de especies fue Encyrtinae, con 19 géneros y 32 especies, seguida por Tetracneminae con 8 géneros y 20 especies. El género con mayor número de especies fue Metaphycus con 10. El valor de la riqueza estimada de especies fue analizado usando los modelos paramétricos, el mejor fue el logarítmico, el cual es indefinido. Las especies no fueron abundantes. La riqueza y abundancia de las especies varió con el tiempo, registrándose el valor más grande durante la temporada de secas. La fauna fue más parecida a la de Huautla, Morelos que a la de Huatulco, Oaxaca, ambas previamente estudiadas
