    Abstract:

    Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) often demonstrate deficits in Everyday Memory (EM), which negatively impacts their recollection of recent experiences and the development of appropriate social skills. There is currently a lack of interventions focused on improving EM for these youth. Here we describe a study that will empirically validate a pilot SenseCam intervention as a classroom tool for improving EM and social skills for children with FASD. By facilitating EM recollection, such a technique has the potential to foster a pathway for children with FASD to improved social integration and quality of life.

    Abstract:

    Few studies have examined both episodic and semantic autobiographical Memory (AM) performance during late childhood and early adolescence. Using the newly developed Children’s Autobiographical Interview (CAI), the present study examined the effects of age and sex on episodic and semantic AM and Everyday Memory in 182 children and adolescents. Results indicated that episodic and semantic AM both improved between 8 and 16 years of age; however, age-related changes were larger for episodic AM than for semantic AM. In addition, females were found to recall more episodic AM details, but not more semantic AM details, than males. Importantly, this sex difference in episodic AM recall was attenuated under conditions of high retrieval support (i.e., the use of probing questions). The ability to clearly visualize past events at the time of recollection was also related to children’s episodic AM recall performance, particularly the retrieval of perceptual details. Finally, similar age and sex effects were found between episodic AM and Everyday Memory ability (e.g., Memory for Everyday activities). More specifically, older participants and females exhibited better episodic AM and Everyday Memory performance than younger participants and males. Overall, the present study provides important new insight into both episodic and semantic AM performance, as well as the relation between episodic AM and Everyday Memory, during late childhood and early adolescence.

    Background: Despite early diagnosis and treatment of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) after newborn screening, selective and persistent neurocognitive weaknesses may be seen. One area of particular weakness is Memory, especially on tasks known to be mediated by the hippocampus. However, the hippocampus has not been directly studied in this population. Objective: Our objective was to use magnetic resonance imaging to determine whether children and adolescents with CH have reduced hippocampal size and abnormal hippocampal growth patterns relative to peers and whether reduced hippocampal volumes in CH predict poor Memory performance. Methods: Studied were 35 CH and 44 typically developing controls aged 9–15 yr. All were assessed using standardized tests of intelligence and verbal and visual Memory and received an magnetic resonance imaging scan.     Background: Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of paging systems in compensating for Everyday Memory and planning problems after brain injury, including in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: Here, in addition to further analyses of the TBI data from a previous randomised control crossover trial, results are reported from a sub-group of 36 participants with brain injury from cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Results: Results indicate that, as with the TBI group, the pager was effective. However, the pattern of results following cessation of treatment differed. At a group level, TBI participants demonstrated maintenance of pager-related benefits, whereas CVA participants’ performance returned to baseline levels. Comparisons of demographic and neuropsychological characteristics of the groups showed that the CVA group was older, had a shorter interval post-injury, and had poorer executive function than the TBI group. Furthermore, within the TBI group, maintenance was associated with executive functioning, such that executive dysfunction impeded maintenance. This correlation remained after controlling for demographic differences between groups. Conclusions: Together, these findings suggest that executive dysfunction may affect treatment—for example, whether or not temporary use of the pager is sufficient to establish a subsequently self-sustaining routine.

    OBJECTIVES To evaluate a paging system designed to improve independence in people with Memory problems and executive deficits. METHODS After a successful pilot study, a randomised control trial was conducted involving a crossover design with 143 people aged between 8 and 83 years. All had one or more of the following: Memory, planning, attention, or organisation problems. Most had sustained a traumatic head injury or a stroke although a few had developmental learning difficulties or other conditions. The crossover design ensured that some people received a pager after a 2 week baseline whereas others were required to wait for 7 weeks after the baseline before receiving the pager. Participants were assessed at three time periods—namely, at baseline, 7 weeks, and at 14 weeks postbaseline. RESULTS More than 80% of those who completed the 16 week trial were significantly more successful in carrying out Everyday activities (such as self care, self medication, and keeping appointments) when using the pager in comparison with the baseline period. For most of these, significant improvement was maintained when they were monitored 7 weeks after returning the pager. CONCLUSIONS This particular paging system significantly reduces Everyday failures of Memory and planning in people with brain injury.

    Dementia of Alzheimer Type (DAT) is increasingly detected at an earlier stage of the disorder, when interventions to assist with Everyday Memory difficulties might be most valuable. Some learning is possible in DAT and a number of factors have been identified which may facilitate performance, although applications to Everyday Memory problems have been limited. The concept of errorless learning has not previously been directly examined in relation to DAT, but might provide a useful additional strategy. In the present study, 6 participants with early stage DAT (MMSE scores 21 – 26) received individually tailored interventions, based on errorless learning principles and targeted at a specific Everyday Memory problem. Five of the participants showed significant improvement on the target measures, and maintained this improvement up to 6 months later. The results suggest that it is feasible to intervene with Everyday Memory problems in the early stages

    This report describes NeuroPage, a simple and portable paging system, developed in California by the engineer father of a son with head injury working together with a neuropsychologist. Using an ABA single case experimental design, the efficacy of NeuroPage was evaluated with 15 neurologically impaired subjects all of whom had significant Everyday Memory problems because of organic Memory impairment or because of problems with planning and organisation consequent on frontal lobe damage. Data were analysed with an odds ratio test which takes into account different underlying success rates for each target and calculates an average improvement factor. This test showed a significant improvement between the baseline and the treatment phases for each subject (P<0.05).

    The present study examined self-ratings of two aspects of Everyday Memory performance: long-term prospective Memory—measured by the prospective Memory questionnaire (PMQ), and Everyday Memory—measured by the Everyday Memory questionnaire (EMQ). Use of other substances was also measured and used as covariates in the study. To ensure confidentiality and to expand the numbers used in previous studies, an Internet study was carried out and data from 763 participants was gathered. After controlling for other drug use and strategy use, the data from the PMQ revealed that smokers reported a greater number of long-term prospective Memory errors than non-smokers. There were also differences between light and heavier smokers in long-term prospective Memory, suggesting that nicotine may have a dose-dependent impact upon long-term prospective Memory performance. There was also a significant ANOVA group effect on the EMQ, although the trend for more Memory errors amongst the heavier smokers was statistically only borderline (p = .057). These findings suggest there are selective Memory deficits associated with smoking and that long-term prospective Memory deficits should be added to the growing list of problems associated with cigarette use.

    Given the legal status of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), or Ecstasy, face-to-face access to participants is sometimes difficult. The number of participants in studies of cognitive performance amongst Ecstasy users is variable, with the average being around 30. Access to a larger number of participants is clearly desirable. The present investigation accessed a larger sample size using a web-based design. A website was developed and used for data collection. Prospective Memory ability was assessed using the Prospective Memory Questionnaire. Self-report of day-to-day Memory performance was investigated using the Everyday Memory Questionnaire. The Drug Questionnaire assessed the use of other substances as well as Ecstasy, allowing a regression design to isolate the contribution of each substance to any variance on the cognitive measures. Preliminary findings (N = 488) indicate that there is a clear double dissociation between the impact of Ecstasy and cannabis. We found that cannabis was associated with reports of 'here-and-now' cognitive problems in short-term and internally cued prospective Memory. In contrast, Ecstasy was associated with reports of long-term Memory problems, which were more related to storage and retrieval difficulties.
