LatailleAbstract:Publisher Summary This chapter deals with writing Fire Protection specifications that covers all the disciplines on a project. Most specifications have standard divisions for site work, building structural elements, and mechanical and electrical systems. Fire Protection features covered by project specifications include the following: building construction, building layout, special Fire/explosion hazards, detection/alarm systems, Fire Protection water supplies, sprinkler systems, special extinguishing systems, exposure Protection, and Fire prevention features. The most frequently used specifications format is that of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). For particular system, the Fire Protection is spread throughout many divisions and the particular division addresses several Fire Protection features. The Construction Specifications Institute is in the process of expanding the MasterFormatTM specifications. There is no specific section assigned for smoke control systems. These could be handled under HVAC sections for a particular project.

Most prescriptive Fire Protection designs are dictated through prescriptive codes. The prescriptive codes used in Fire Protection are the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and regional building codes. Prescriptive codes are both easy to apply and easy to misapply. The most familiar code that prescribes Fire Protection design is NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. Understanding the risk inherent in prescriptive design paves the way for accepting performance-based design, where the level of risk is specified as a basis for the design. NFPA 101, Life Safety Code,© is referenced by the U.S. regional building codes.

LatailleAbstract:Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of Fire Protection engineering, which interfaces with all the major disciplines on a building project. Fire Protection engineering involves designing devices, systems, and processes to serve a particular function, such as protecting people, property, and business operations from Fire. It is one of the fifteen engineering disciplines that offer a professional engineering (P.E) examination through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). A good source of information about Fire Protection engineering is the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE). SFPE defines Fire Protection engineering as the application of science and engineering principles to protect people and their environment from destructive Fire. A Fire Protection engineer (FPE), by education, training, and experience, is familiar with the nature and characteristics of Fire and the associated products of combustion, by understanding how the Fire originates, spreads within and outside the building, and is detected, controlled, and extinguished.

Fire Protection for New and Existing Buildings

LatailleAbstract:This chapter highlights Fire Protection for new and existing buildings, where the structural, electrical, and mechanical systems are designed to meet the needs of the applicable codes. Fire Protection must be integrated into the design process and coordinated throughout the construction. New construction projects are usually more straightforward than projects involving changes to existing buildings. In a performance-based design, any change to the building can affect the Fire Protection systems that meet the performance specifications of the owner. Management of change includes many familiar issues, including changes to building construction, building layout, building systems, occupancy, process design, and storage configuration. The Fire Protection design process for projects in existing facilities reviews the existing Fire Protection design, analyzes existing building construction, building systems, occupancy, and Fire Protection systems, documents new facility goals and the changes required to meet the new goals, analyzes the effects of anticipated changes, determines whether prescriptive or performance-based design will best serve the project, and considers using combinations of prescriptive and performance based designs. Fire Protection design can be especially challenging for certain types of renovations to the existing buildings.

And the method of the Fire probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) and the Fire Protection deign in the nuclear power plant are described. The combination of the performance-based Fire Protection and the Fire Protection deign in the nuclear power plant are discussed, and the Fire PSA will be used to validate to improve the design and the Fire safety level in the nuclear power plant. The process of the combined method is also described. Although there are some improvements in the future, but the combination is possible and useful in the nuclear power plant Fire Protection design. The advantages and disadvantages of the combination are also discussed.
