In this work, more than 20 specimens either recently collected or deposited in several herbaria were studied. These specimens document a wider distribution of the species in Mexico (Jalisco), and its first record from South America, based on col lections from Colombia and Venezuela. This species grows in tropical regions and is very characteristic because of its small, mustard-yellow basidioma, with a strigose base, long and characteristic pleurocystidia and smaller cheilocystidia.

While our anal- yses of DNA sequence data from the nuclear ribosom- al ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS) gene supports the monophyly of the genus, these traditional subgroups were not recovered. Five well-supported clades within the genus were identified through these analyses: 1) the spectabilis-imperialis group; 2) nevadensis-pene- trans group; 3) a clade formed by G. underwoodii, G. validipes and G. cf. flavidellus; 4) aeruginosus-luteo- folius group; and 5) lepidotus-subearlei group. Re- lationships among these subgroups were not re- solved.

Its effect on the growth and enzymatic activity of wood rotting basidiomycetes (Coriolus versicolor, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, Pleurotus ostreatus, Ganoderma resinaceum, Punctularia atropurpurascens, Pycnoporus sanguineous, Inonotus sp, Gymnopilus spectabilis and Gloeophyllum trabeum) was analysed, based on measurements of initial growth rate, minimum inhibitory growth and decolourisation inhibiting concentration. The study solution inhibited mycelial growth and extracellular ligninolytic activity at concentrations between 0·5 and 2 mM Zn2+, depending on species. The above results were compared with the effect of solutions of pure sulphates. Study solution inhibited mycelial growth at a lower concentration than that of pure sulphates. Among some of the clinically relevant pathogens, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ranks as one of the most difficult bacteria to treat. It is a common cause of skin, soft-tissue, and endovascular infections, as well as pneumonia, septic arthritis, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and sepsis. The research on Basidiomycota is extensive; many species show a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including antimicrobial activity. The vast majority of the literature to date generally focuses on screening the antibacterial properties of mushroom extracts. A gap still exists in the identification of the individual compounds responsible for these properties, and few low molecular weight compounds have been described. Gymnopilus junonius, the big laughter mushroom, grows wild in Uruguay, especially on Eucalyptus spp. plantations; it is known as the "eucalyptus fungus." In this work, we report the bioguided isolation, structural elucidation, and antistaphylococcal activity of the main antimicrobial components of fresh basidiocarps of G. junonius.

Purification and Applications of a Lectin from the Mushroom Gymnopilus spectabilis

The lectin agglutinates mouse red cells exhibiting broad specificity towards several monosaccharides including the N-acetylneuraminic acid. Agglutination was also inhibited by the glycoproteins: fetuin, lactoferrin, and recombinant erythropoietin. GSL is a glycoprotein possessing 16 % of carbohydrates; the SDS-PAGE showed two bands with molecular mass of 52.1 and 64.4 kDa. Isoelectric focusing displayed microheterogeneity, with two bands at pIs 5.1 and 5.3. The lectin was stable between pH 2 and pH 8 while at pH 10, the agglutination decayed to 50 % of initial activity. Incubation at 40 and 80 °C led to 50 and 100 % loss in activity of the lectin, respectively. Synthesized GSL-Sepharose interacts with serum pregnant mare gonadotropin, and at least two subpopulations of this glycoprotein were separated. There was no interaction between transferrin and soluble GSL while a partial recognition was achieved with GSL-Sepharose. The terminal sialic acid seems to play an active role in modifying the interaction with GSL, depending if the lectin is in a soluble or immobilized form. The purified lectin inhibited in vitro the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger .

Efficiency of treatments for controlling Trichoderma spp during spawning in cultivation of lignicolous mushrooms.

Many disinfection treatments are commonly applied to lignocellulose substrates to prevent contamination. Mushroom growers are usually worried about the contaminations that may occur after these treatments during handling or spawning. The aim of this paper is to estimate the growth of the green mold Trichoderma sp on lignocellulose substrates after different disinfection treatments to know which of them is more effective to avoid contamination during spawning phase. Three different treatments were assayed: sterilization (121 °C), immersion in hot water (60 and 80 °C), and immersion in alkalinized water. Wheat straw, wheat seeds and Eucalyptus or Populus sawdust were used separately as substrates. After the disinfection treatments, bagged substrates were sprayed with 3 mL of suspension of conidia of Trichoderma sp (10(5) conidia/mL) and then separately spawned with Pleurotus ostreatus or Gymnopilus pampeanus. The growth of Trichoderma sp was evaluated based on a qualitative scale. Trichoderma sp could not grow on non-sterilized substrates. Immersions in hot water treatments and immersion in alkalinized water were also unfavorable treatments for its growth. Co- cultivation with mushrooms favored Trichoderma sp growth. Mushroom cultivation disinfection treatments of lignocellulose substrates influence on the growth of Trichoderma sp when contaminations occur during spawning phase. The immersion in hot water at 60 °C for 30 min or in alkalinized water for 36 h, are treatments which better reduced the contaminations with Trichoderma sp during spawning phase for the cultivation of lignicolous species.

The objective of this work is to determine the optimal condition needed to cultivate G. pampeanus, to evaluate its biological efficiency and to determine the biodegradation of substrate. Populus and Eucalyptus sawdust were used as substrates for production. We determined that light is necessary for a normal development of primordia. Strain ICFC 748/12 produces the highest biological efficiency on Populus sawdust reaching a mean of 70.67%. G. pampeanus has a strong capacity to degrade Eucalyptus and Populus. This mushroom has the ability to decompose cellulose and also to decay lignin, thus being white rot fungi. This is the first report of the cultivation of this species on lignocellulosic waste which turns it into a promising species for commercial production.

Checklist of the Argentine Agaricales 7. Cortinariaceae and Entolomataceae
Check List, 2014Co-Authors: Nicolás Niveiro, Edgardo AlbertoAbstract:A checklist of species belonging to the families Cortinariaceae and Entolomataceae was made for Argentina. The list includes all species published until the year 2012. Nineteen genera and 444 species were recorded, 370 species from the family Cortinariaceae and 74 from Entolomataceae. All of them are distributed in 19 genera, the most important being Cortinarius (240 species), Galerina (51), Entoloma (39) and Inocybe (40). With the exception of Hebeloma (13 species), Gymnopilus (12) and Clitopilus (11), the rest of the 13 genera have less than 10 species each. Galeropsis , Locellina , Nolanea and PseudoGymnopilus have only one species recorded so far.
