    Abstract:

    Five species of Inocybe from eastern North America are described as new: Inocybe carolinensis, Inocybe dulciolens, Inocybe friabilis, Inocybe glaucescens, and Inocybe vinaceobrunnea. Inocybe carolinensis is a new species in Inocybe sect. Inocybe; I. dulciolens and I. glaucescens are two new species in Inocybe sect. Lactiferae; I. friabilis is described as new in the Pseudosperma clade (Inocybe sect. Rimosae sensu stricto); and I. vinaceobrunnea is newly described for I. jurana sensu Hesler in the Inosperma clade (Inocybe sect. Rimosae sensu lato). At least four of the five species are endemic to regions of eastern North America based on current distribution data. ITS, 28S rDNA, rpb2, and rpb1 genes, in combination with morphological and ecological traits, are used to aid in species recognition. Phylogenetic trees, taxonomic descriptions, and illustrations are provided.

    ABSTRACTThe Inocybe geophylla group is circumscribed based on phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences largely sampled from North America and Europe. Twenty-nine phylogenetic species are uncovered after analysis of combined nuc 28S rDNA (28S) and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (rpb2) DNA sequence data. Species in the I. geophylla group share the presence of a cortina, silky-fibrillose pileus and stipe, pruinose stipe apex, spermatic odor, thick-walled hymenial cystidia, and smooth amygdaliform or elliptical basidiospores. Within the group as many as five phylogenetic species attributable to I. lilacina and allies form a strongly supported clade based on analysis of nuc ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA (ITS), 28S, and rpb2 data. However, all lilac colored species do not form a monophyletic group. Sufficient morphological and ecological data are present to document four of the I. lilacina subgroup species, two of which are described from North America as new: I. ionocephala and I. sublilacina.     Abstract:

    Inocybe distincta sp. nov. is described from Kerala State, India. A comprehensive description, photographs, line drawings and comments are provided. The nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), a portion of the nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nrLSU) and a portion of the nuclear second-largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) gene of this species were sequenced and analyzed. BLASTn searches using nrLSU and RPB2 sequences and subsequent ML phylogenetic analysis of combined nrLSU and RPB2 sequences confirmed that Inocybe distincta is a representative of the Nothocybe lineage. As the Nothocybe lineage is assumed to have affinities to I. cutifracta , and as there are different interpretations of that species, we examined the holotype of I. cutifracta collected by T. Petch and another collection from Sri Lanka identified as I. cutifracta by D. N. Pegler, and we present here our observations on these collections.

    Abstract:

    Inocybe insignis, an eastern North American species with greenish blue staining basidiomes, is documented for the first time since its original description circa 75 years ago in the Great Smoky Mountains. Here, we provide a detailed macroscopic and microscopic description and photographs of this rarely collected species, based on material collected in an Illinois oak-hickory forest. Analysis of molecular phylogenetic data strongly supports an evolutionary alliance with Asian and Australasian species of the Inocybe asterospora group. The combination of stellate basidiospores, marginate stipe base, entirely pruinose stipe, rimose pileus, and strong distinctive odor corroborates the molecular results, but the closest relatives of I. insignis lack the greenish blue staining characteristic of I. insignis.

    Results of a study on species of Inocybe section Rimosae sensu lato in Utah are presented. Eight species, seven from the Pseudosperma clade (section Rimosae sensu stricto) and one from the Inosperma clade (section Rimosae pro parte), are documented morphologically and phylogenetically. Five of the eight species, I. aestiva, I. breviterincarnata, I. cercocarpi, I. niveivelata and I. occidentalis—all members of the Pseudosperma clade—are described as new from Utah and other western states. Two European species, I. spuria and I. obsoleta, are confirmed from Utah. Inocybe aurora, originally described from Nova Scotia, is synonymized with I. obsoleta. The only member of the Inosperma clade recorded from Utah is I. lanatodisca, a widely distributed species for which three geographical clusters were detected.     Inocybe tauensis is described as a new species from the island of Ta’u, American Samoa. The species occurs in native littoral forest and is associated with the ectomycorrhizal tree Pisonia grandis. Based on an analysis of nLSU, RPB1, and RPB2 sequence data, I. tauensis appears to be derived from ancestors with a Paleotropical biogeographical distribution. Alternative explanations for the unexpected presence of an Inocybe species in the Samoan Archipelago are discussed.

    Abstract:

    A phylogenetic and taxonomic study of the Inocybe splendens complex in western North America is presented. Our analysis indicates that western North American and European specimens referable to I. splendens sensu lato cluster into eight clades and that European and western North American repre- sentatives of this taxon are not conspecific. Section Splendentes and supersection ''Marginatae'' of Inocybe, smooth-spored taxa characterized by a syndrome of unique developmental characters (entirely or mostly pruinose stipe, absence of cortina, frequent presence of marginate basal bulb) are not monophyletic. The species concept for I. splendens is discussed, and a lectotype for I. splendens sensu Heim is designated. Two new species, I. monticola and I. praecox ,a re illustrated and described. The poorly known species I. bakeri is redescribed from type material, and a key for 22 species is provided for identification of these and other non-reddening species with smooth spores and a caulocystidiate stipe reported from North America and Europe.

Taxonomy and illustrations of these species are provided, along with a key to these and similar species found in Europe and North America. These species of section Marginatae are characterized by having nodulose spores and a stipe that is abundantly pruinose only in the upper half. Inocybe praetervisa occurs in Southern Europe in mountainous mixed coniferous forests, and is not confirmed from Northern Europe. Inocybe rivularis occurs in northern boreal forests up to the lower alpine zone, associated with Betula in moist habitats, and is not confirmed from Southern Europe. Inocybe taxocystis is confirmed as a later synonym of I. favrei. The species has a wide geographical distribution range in Europe, mainly restricted to the alpine zone and moist soils, associated with Salix herbacea. Inocybe arctica is here described as a new species. It occurs in the arctic and higher alpine zones, associated with Dryas octopetala, Salix polaris, S. reticulata and S. herbacea.     Abstract:

    The genus Inocybe (including subgenus Mallocybe ) is a significant component of the ectomycorrhizal community in arctic and alpine habitats in terms of both diversity and distribution. Species are associated primarily with low woody shrubs of Salix , Betula and Dryas . There is evidence that shrubs are expanding in arctic-alpine habitats making the ectomycorrhizal fungi that support them of high interest. Here we provide the first detailed report for six Mallocybe taxa with willows from the Rocky Mountain alpine zone (WY, MT, CO) including: Inocybe arthrocystis , I. dulcamara , I. leucoloma , I. leucoblema and in the I. fulvipes group, I. substraminipes and other taxa. Phylogenetic analysis matched Rocky Mountain specimens to arctic-alpine specimens from Scandinavia. ITS sequences of Kuhner and Favre type specimens were used as references for several clades. Data suggest that these species have a broad intercontinental range in arctic-alpine habitats and a few are known from the subalpine. A key to Mallocybe species in the Rocky Mountains is provided along with type information.

    Abstract:

    Inocybe is a cosmopolitan genus of gilled mushrooms with high species diversity in the northern hemisphere. Focusing on moist habitats in Central Europe, several collections could not be assigned to any known species of Inocybe . Phylogenetic analyses revealed that these collections belonged to three phylogenetically distinct lineages. To ensure a correct interpretation of the species identity in comparison with morphologically similar species, an isotype of I. flavobrunnescens , isoparatypes of I. hirculus and I. lacunarum , and a paratype of I. caprimulgi were examined both morphologically and phylogenetically. Sequencing of the lectotype of I. tabacina Furrer-Ziogas designated in this manuscript failed, but other collections unequivocally belonging to the same species could be included in molecular phylogenies. As a result of molecular phylogenetic and morphological analyses, three new hygrophilous species of the genus Inocybe , subgenus Inocybe , are described: one smooth-spored, I. botaurina , and two nodulose-spored, I. bombina and I. undinea .

    Abstract:

    The subgenus Inocybe is widespread in the Holarctic but, due to a superficially similar appearance of the species, much of its diversity has been overlooked. In this study, a revision of some Central European species of the subgenus is carried out. On the basis of detailed morphological and phylogenetic investigation, five new species of Inocybe, subgenus Inocybe are described. Three of these are smooth-spored (I. venustissima, I. curcumina, and I. leochroma), and two are nodulose-spored (I. strickeriana and I. villosa). The new species are compared to the type specimens of I. alluvionis, I. angulatosquamulosa, I. hirtelloides,I. pelargonium, I. salicis, I. splendentoides, I. straminipes, and I. terrifera. Inocybe derbschii is confirmed, and a comprehensive description with photographs is given. The morphological species complex consisting of I. furfurea, I. rufotacta, and I. sandrae is disentangled and it is shown that the three names are synonyms. Finally, it is shown that I. stenospora does not belong to the subgenus Mallocybe but to the subgenus Inocybe. All new species and most type specimens were included in molecular phylogenetic analyses. The phylogenetic analyses are well in line with the current perception of species boundaries in Inocybe subg. Inocybe.
