    Abstract:

    Digital Ink-Jet printing was developed more than two decades ago, to print image directly from the computer on substrates such as paper, film and plastic, etc. In the past decade, digital Ink-Jet printing has been extensively used in textile applications also due to improvement of ink, software and machinery. Therefore, a comprehensive review of digital Ink-Jet printing on textiles was conducted. The technical aspects of digital Ink-Jet printing are addressed and hardware requirements of digital Ink-Jet printing system for textiles are also reviewed. Specific criteria of ink and substrate for digital Ink-Jet printing are discussed. On the other hand, problems of printing quality because of textile substrate are also discussed in this paper.

  • Influence of low-temperature plasma on the Ink-Jet-printed cotton fabric

    Abstract:

    This article studies the effect of low-temperature plasma (LTP) on an Ink-Jet-printed cotton fabric. Owing to the specific printing and conductivity requirements for Ink-Jet printing, none of the conventional printing chemicals used for cotton fabric can be directly incorporated into the ink formulation. As a result, the cotton fabric requires pretreatment with the printing chemicals prior to the stage of Ink-Jet printing. The aim of this article is to study the possibility and effectiveness of applying LTP treatment to enhance the performance of pretreatment paste containing sodium alginate so as to improve the properties of the Ink-Jet-printed cotton fabric. Scanning electron microscopic pictures show that LTP treatment may cause cracks on the fiber surface and hence more dyes could approach the fiber surface during the Ink-Jet printing process, leading to a higher dye uptake subsequently. In addition, not only the dye uptake is increased after the LTP treatment but the color-fastness properties and the definition of the final print marks are also improved. Therefore, LTP pretreatment in couple with the Ink-Jet printing technique could improve the final printed properties of cotton fabric. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007

    This paper studies the effect of low-temperature plasma treatment on an Ink-Jet printed cotton fabric. Due to the specific printing and conductivity requirements for Ink-Jet printing, not all conventional printing chemicals, such as sodium alginate and urea, used for cotton fabric can be directly incorporated into the ink formulation. As a result, the cotton fabric requires pretreatment with the printing chemicals prior to the stage of Ink-Jet printing. Cotton is pretreated with the printing chemicals by means of a coating method. The aim of this paper was to study the possibility and effectiveness of applying low-temperature plasma treatment to enhance the performance of pretreatment paste containing sodium alginate so as to improve the properties of the Ink-Jet printed cotton fabric. Experimental results revealed that a low-temperature plasma pretreatment coupled with the Ink-Jet printing technique could improve the final printed properties of cotton fabric.

  • Research on the Surface Tension of Water-Based Ink-Jet Ink

    Abstract:

    In order to research and control the surface tension of the water-based Ink-Jet ink, and ensure the printing quality of the ink, water-based ink samples with different surface tension are prepared and the roundness, volume, speed and the tail length of the drop are measured in order to analyze the influence of surface tension to drop state. The influence of the main components to the surface tension is discussed through testing the surface tension of the water-based Ink-Jet ink which has different components. The result shows that the surface tension of the water-based Ink-Jet ink has big influence to the drop state, so the suitable surface tension is the key to guarantee the printing quality. And the kind of the resins influence the surface tension, the influence of adding different kinds and levels of surfactants to surface tension is different.

  • Influence of the Ink-Jet Condition to the Piezoelectric Drop State of Edible Ink-Jet Ink

    Abstract:

    The drop state of the Ink-Jet ink is an important factor that influences the Ink-Jet imaging quality, so the drop state under different voltage and frequency is researched in order to research the influence of the Ink-Jet condition to the drop state. The edible ink sample is printed with Spectra Polaris nozzle under different Ink-Jet condition including voltage and frequency, and the drop state is observed by drop observation. The result shows that while voltage increases, drop speed increases and drop volume increases first and decreases then. The duration time of drop necking state is the same under different voltage, but the tail length becomes longer if the voltage is up to 120V. The drop speed is stability under the frequency of 2KHz-4KHz, but when the frequency continues to increase, the speed shows a trend of decrease.

    Ink-Jet printing technology is the mainstream of digital printing, and piezoelectric Ink-Jet printing is the main Ink-Jet printing at present, besides, drop’s injection and controlling technology is the key to the development of Ink-Jet printing technology. The surface tension plays an important role in the drop’s generation process, it will restrict the length and the state of the drop, further influence Ink-Jet printing quality. Six edible ink samples with different surface tension are prepared in order to research the influence of the surface tension to the piezoelectric inkjet Printing drop state, then the drop state is observed and its speed and volume are measured through drops observatory. The result shows that the speed of drop is higher if the ink’s surface tension is lower, but the drop is easier to gather into spherical drop and it also has smaller tail length and bigger volume.

    Abstract:

    pH value of fluorescent Ink-Jet ink has an obvious influence on fluorescent powder, high or low pH value could cause some problems, such as fluorescence quenches, fluorescent quantum yield decreased, and so on. And these factors make against fluorescent Ink-Jet ink luminous properties reach the best result. This article is to design fluorescent Ink-Jet ink formula when it is exposured to deep Ultraviolet light to display green, and a series of ink samples were prepared. pH regulator was used to regulate pH value of green fluorescent Ink-Jet ink system. This paper discusses the effects of pH value on luminous intensity, fluorescent quantum yield. The results indicated that triethanolamine can regulate pH value of fluorescent Ink-Jet ink, when pH value increases from 8.70 to 11.20, luminous intensity, fluorescent quantum yield have a decrease tendency.

    Abstract:

    With the aim to study the effect of prepolymer on performance of UV Ink-Jet yellow ink , prepare UV Ink-Jet yellow ink color paste by change prepolymer and pigment/binder , test it’s particle size and distribution, explore the effect of different prepolymers and pigment/binder on the dispersion property; make ink color good dispersion paste into ink by using different film forming prepolymers, test the surface tension , viscosity , and curing speed, explore the effect of different prepolymers on the performance of UV Ink-Jet ink. The results indicate that, prepolymer on the dispersion property has great influence, color paste prepared by prepolymer CN2303 at pigment/binder for 2:1 has minimum particle size, and has good dispersion, film forming prepolymers has great influence on viscosity and curing speed of ink, has little effect on the surface tension of ink.

  • Preparation of pigmented ink‐jet ink by a combination of surface treatments and synthetic dispersant

    Abstract:

    Drop-on-demand Ink-Jet inks prepared from dyes usually show inadequate light and water fastness. Thus, in our previous paper, we studied black pigmented Ink-Jet inks with the aim of overcoming the drawbacks of dye-based ink by employing a variety of synthetic dispersants with gas black. In this study, pigmented Ink-Jet inks were prepared by a combination of the synthetic dispersant and the surface treatments of a furnace black that is more common than gas blacks. The results of this study show that the surface treatment of the furnace black and the use of the synthetic dispersant are useful in the preparation of Ink-Jet inks and endow them with properties that are comparable with those of commercial Ink-Jet inks.

    Drop-on-demand Ink-Jet inks made from dyes usually show poor light fastness and poor water fastness. Therefore, many researchers have introduced pigments into Ink-Jet inks to overcome the defects of dye-based ink. Pigmented ink needs sophisticated technology which disperses the pigments stably in low viscosity. Thus, adequate dispersants are essential to achieve stable dispersions of pigments for Ink-Jet inks. This study describes syntheses of dispersants, properties of formulations and comparisons of performance with an existing ink to assess their suitability for commercial application.

    Drop-on-demand Ink-Jet inks made from dyes generally show poor light and wet fastness. A number of studies have been carried out previously to improve the fastness of such inks by introducing novel dyes and new additives. Based on the research results, use of fast dyes could give Ink-Jet inks with good properties. This study describes new black dyes for aqueous Ink-Jet inks, which show better light and wet fastness and print quality, compared to an analogous ink formulated from CI Food Black 2.
