    Halicephalobus gingivalis (H. gingivalis) causes a rare and fatal infection in horses and humans. Despite the zoonotic potential and severity of the disease, the epidemiology and pathogenesis of halicephalobiasis are still poorly understood. Several European cases of equine halicephalobiasis have been documented; however, in South-Eastern European countries, including Romania, equine neurohelminthiasis caused by H. gingivalis has not been previously described. Two Lipizzaner horses with a clinical history of progressive neurological signs were referred to the Pathology Department of the Cluj-Napoca (Romania) for necropsy. Both horses died with severe neurological signs. Gross examination and cytological, histological, and molecular analyses were performed. The stallions came from two different breeding farms. No history of traveling outside Romania was recorded. At necropsy, granulomatous and necrotizing lesions were observed in the kidneys, lymph nodes, brain, retroperitoneal adipose tissue, and lungs, indicating a systemic infection. Parasitological and histopathological analyses evidenced larval and adult forms of rhabditiform nematodes consistent with Halicephalobus species. Parasites were observed in both lymph and blood vessels of different organs and were also identified in urine samples. A subunit of the large-subunit ribosomal RNA gene (LSU rDNA) of H. gingivalis (673 bp) was amplified from lesions in both horses.

    Abstract:

    Due to the increased trend of using Lipizzaner in driving sport in Croatia, the goal of the research was to improve the measuring of characteristics which determine Lipizzaner physical performance using digital video camera. The length and speed of walk and trot on hand were analyzed for Lipizzaner mares and stallions owned by Lipizzaner Stud of Đakovo and private breeders in Croatia. In three repetitions we measured the length of walk and trot step of 71 head of Lipizzaner breed as well as crest height, chest and shank magnitude. By analyzing step characteristics we obtained the shortest time needed for one step per second ( 0, 97 s/s for stallions and 0, 92 s/s for mares ) in relation to literature about Lipizzaner breed, and the top speed in meters per second (1, 65 m/s for stallions and 1, 66 m/s for mares ). The length of a walk duration for Lipizzaner mares was 0, 92 step per second and for stallions it was 0, 97 step per second. The length of a trot step duration for Lipizzaner mares was 1, 38 step per second and for stallions it was 1, 46 step per second. The length of step on 50 meters for Lipizzaner mares was 1, 78 meters and for stallions it was 1, 69 meters. The length of trot step on 50 meters for Lipizzaner mares was 2, 52 meters and for stallions it was 2, 51 meters. Walk speed at kilometer per hour on 50 meters was 5, 90 km/h for mares and stallions together. Average trot speed was 12, 57 km/h for mares and 13, 23 km/h for stallions.

  • Genetic Analysis of the Withers Growth In Lipizzan Horse Using Random Regression

    Longitudinal records of the withers height (taken at birth, six, 12, 24 and 36 months of age) were analyzed for 879 Lipizzan horses born in Croatia between 1931 and 1999. The corresponding pedigree file consisted of 5010 horses. Covariance functions were estimated by using bivariate animal models with ages defined as separate traits and by using random regression model directly on data. In all models, sex, age of dam and interaction stud-year-season were considered as fixed effects while individual horses and residual errors were considered as random effects. The random regression model also included permanent environment effect due to repeated measurements. Polynomial functions of order three were adequate to explain additive genetic functions. Estimated heritabilities from bivariate and random regression models ranged from 0.14 to 0.25 and from 0.12 to 0.23, respectively. While genetic correlations between longitudinal records ranged from 0.76 to 0.99, corresponding phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.12 to 0.49. Overall, the estimated covariance functions from this study demonstrated heterogeneity of covariances of wither height in Lipizzaner horse and proved to be adequate in estimating covariances and correlations between heights at any two age points from birth to 36 months of age.

    Besides being well known for their use in classical dressage, Lipizzaner horses are today becoming more and more popular for use in driving sport, with Croatia as the largest breeder in the world. To estimate their phenotypic predisposition for driving sport, this research analyzes the correlation between body measurements and traits of length and speed of walk and hand-led trot in 18 stallions (LS) and 53 mares (LM) by using a digital camera. Statistical analysis of the data concerning phenotypic correlations among the indicated traits has revealed the potential of documenting a large number of structural exterior body characteristics and quantitative measurements in Lipizzaner horses, and technical equipment has been found to be useful in research of stride traits. Higher withers height (WH) achieved through breeding was found to be negatively correlated with the number of strides per second during walk and trot, but positively correlated with walk stride length, especially in LS. Higher values for chest girth (CG) and cannon bone circumference (CBC) were found to be positively correlated with speed, as well as with stride length in LS, and negatively correlated with the number of strides per second during walk and trot in both LS and LM. Because for many years the goal of breeding Lipizzaners in Croatia has been to obtain a bigger body format and longer stride, leading to better results in a driving sport, these findings confirm breeding goals in selection work guided toward better stride length and extended stride as the most desirable traits for driving sport.

    Lipicanska pasmina, prema podacima, na hrvatskom tlo prvi puta dolazi oko 1700. Godine na imanje grofa Jankovica u Terezovcu, a prvi sljedeci podatak je iz 1806. Godine kada se Ergela Lipica, bježeci pred Napoleonom, smjesta u biskupijskim stalama u Đakovu. Od prvih dolazaka do danas uzgoj lipicanaca u Hrvatskoj postao je najveci svjetski nacionalni uzgoj lipicanske pasmine. Zbog velikih obradivih poljoprivrednih povrsina Slavonija je imala i velike potrebe za konjima kao izvorom radne snage. Tako je lipicanac zbog sposobnosti adaptacije postao od konja kraljeva konj za poljoprivredne radove. Upravo zbog potreba i kontinuiranog povecanja broja grla, uzgoj lipicanaca u Slavoniji porastao je u Međunarodnoj strucnoj literaturi poznat kao „ slavonski lipicanski bazen“ . Kroz godine s dolaskom mehanizacije i robotizacije, i danas u vremenu informatizacije, od izvora radne snage lipicanac je postao konj za vrhunska natjecanja, posebice zaprežni sport. No, buduci da je postao dio povijesti i življenja Slavonac, od vremena rada na poljima do sportskog konja, lipicanac je u Hrvatskoj opstao upravo zahvaljujuci sprezi Slavonaca i njihovih konja. To potvrđuje cinjenica da je lipicanac danas nezaobilazan cimbenik brojnih slavonskih kulturno – folklornih manifestacija. Uzgoj lipicanaca u Hrvatskoj najveci je svjetski uzgoj ove pasmine. I ne samo kvantitativno, nego i kvalitativno možemo reci da smo vodeca zemlja u uzgoju ove pasmine konja. Danas se u Hrvatskoj aktivne dvije državne lipicanske ergele (Đakovo i Lipik) i najveci nacionalni zemaljski (privatni) uzgoj. Uzgoj izvan državnih ergela organiziran je u udruge i privatne ergele koje su clanice Hrvatskog saveza udruga uzgajivaca lipicanske pasmine konja.

    Cilj istraživanja bio je analizirati dobivenu razliku između tjelesnih mjera ergelskih i udružnih kobila lipicanske pasmine. Izmjerene kobile državne ergele lipicanaca u Đakovu i kobile vlasnistvo privatnih uzgajivaca, clanova konjogojskih udruga iz Slavonije su grla s punim rodovnikom. Mjerenja su provedena Lydtinovim stapom i stocnom vrpcom na ukupno 80 grla. Izmjerene su visina grebena stapom i vrpcom, visina leđa, visina križa, dužina trupa, dubina prsa, sirina prsa, opseg prsa i opseg cjevanice. Vrijednosti dobivenih mjerenja obrađene su statistickim metodama koje se koriste u stocarstvu. Dobivene vece vrijednosti tjelesnih mjera dokazuju da su pod strožom selekcijom i kvalitetnije hranjene ergelske kobile.

    REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: A serological study conducted in 1995 revealed that 7 stallions at the Lipizzaner Centre, Gauteng, South Africa, were seropositive for antibody to equine arteritis virus (EAV). A Lipizzaner stallion imported into South Africa from Yugoslavia in 1981 had previously (1988) been confirmed to be an EAV carrier. Despite being placed under life-long breeding quarantine, EAV had been transmitted between stallions at the Lipizzaner Centre. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the phylogenetic relationships between the strain of EAV shed in the semen of the original carrier stallion and strains recovered from the semen of 5 other stallions; and to investigate the means whereby lateral transmission of EAV occurred among 7 in-contact, nonbreeding stallions at the Centre. METHODS: EAV was isolated from semen collected from the seropositive stallions using RK-13 cells. Viral RNA was reverse transcribed and amplified by polymerase chain reaction using ORF 5-specific primers, subjected to sequence and phylogenetic analysis. RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis of strains of EAV recovered from the semen of 6 persistently infected stallions confirmed that all viruses were closely related and probably derived from a common ancestor, i.e. the stallion imported from Yugoslavia. Lateral transmission subsequently occurred among 7 in-contact, nonbreeding stallions at the Centre. It is speculated that these stallions may have been exposed to virus from bedding or fomites contaminated with semen. CONCLUSIONS: These data confirm that lateral transmission of EAV can occur from shedding stallions to susceptible, in-contact horses, including other stallions, which may become persistently infected with the virus. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: The findings are consistent with lateral spread of a single, unique strain of EAV among a group; and suggest that transmission of EAV may be initiated by infection of one or more stallions with virus on bedding or other fomites contaminated with EAV- infected semen.
