    Abstract:

    Field trials were conducted in 2015 and 2016 cropping seasons to evaluate some herbicide mixtures and Manual Weed Control method in the production of maize in the southern Guinea savanna of Nigeria. The experiment consisted of 10 treatments as follows: Metolachlor + atrazine and pendimethlin + atrazine at 1.0 + 2.0, 2.0+2.5, 3.0 + 3.0 kg a.i./ha, metolachlor + atrazine and pendimethlin + atrazine at 1.0 + 2.0 kg a.i./ha plus one supplementary hoe Weeding (SHW) at 6 weeks after sowing (WAS), hand Weeding at 3 and 6 WAS and a Weedy check. These treatments were laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. Data collected included Weed dry matter, Weed density, relative importance value  (RIV%) of Weed species, leaf area, plant height and grain yield of maize. Also, economic assessment of the Weed Control methods was carried out. Results showed that metolachlor + atrazine and pendimethalin + atrazine at 1.0 + 2.0 kg a.i./ha plus one SHW at 6 WAS significantly reduced Weed infestation and gave higher maize grain yield and economic returns. These methods are therefore recommended to farmers as alternative to two hand Weeding at 3 and 6 WAS.

  • Evaluation of pre and post-emergence herbicides for Weed management in lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.).

    Abstract:

    The Weeds in lentil are one of the major constraints in obtaining maximum yield. The Manual Weed Control is simply not feasible because it is time consuming and costly. The chemical Weed Control is the effective method of Weed management. A field study was conducted to evaluate pre and post-emergence herbicides for Weed Control in lentil. The experiment comprised eight treatments including three herbicides, Manual Weeding and check (no Weeding). The yield was higher in Manual Weeding but in herbicide treatments Isoproturon as pre-emergence @ 2 kg -1 ha produced statistically at par grain yield to that of Manual Weeding -1 followed by Isoproturon after one month of planting @ 2 kg ha . Both the treatments showed 193.9% and 109.2% yield increase, respectively, over -1 the check. It indicates that Isoproturon @ 2 kg ha can be used pre or post- emergence in lentil fields to Control the Weeds without causing injury to lentil plants.

    A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of different Weed-Control practices and irrigation levels on Weeds and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. emend. Fiori & Paol.) in winter 2002–03 and 2003–04 in Pakistan. The experiment comprised four Weed-Control practices, viz. Weedy check, pre-emergence application of pendimethalin, post-emergence application of isoproturon + carfentrazone ethyl and Manual Weed Control (two hoeings), and four irrigation levels, viz. 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 and 1.25 irrigation water (IW): cumulative pan evaporation (CPE). The Manual hoeing resulted in minimum Weed density and dry weight of Weeds, and gave maximum grain yield of 62.46 and 61.45 q/ha due to more spike-bearing tillers, 1,000-grain weight and number of grains/spike, but was statistically similar to post-emergence application of isoproturon + carfentrazone ethyl. The effect of irrigation levels on Weed density and dry weight of Weeds was non-signifcant in 2002–03 but was significant in 2003–04. The maximum grain yield was obtained at 1.25 IW:CPE.

    Abstract:

    An experiment was conducted to study the effect of rates and methods of application of Penthalene-plus (pendimethalin + prometryn) on Control of wild onion (Asphodelus tenuifolius Cav.) in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) at farmer’s field in district Bhakkar in 2007-08. The experiment comprised of six treatments, including two rates of Penthalene-plus (i.e. 2.5 L and 3.0 L ha -1 ) and two methods of application (pre-emergence spray and sand mix broadcast application). Manual Weed Control (hoeing) and Weedy check (Control) were also included in the experiment for comparison. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with four replications. Wild onion density and its dry biomass m -2 , yield and yield components of chickpea were all significantly affected by the Penthalene-plus doses and application methods. The highest density (210 m -2 ) and dry biomass (436 g m -2 ) of wild onion were observed in Weedy check; while the hoeing treatment had the lowest density (10 m -2 ) and dry biomass (7.56 g m -2 ). Similarly, the highest grain yield (2256 kg ha -1 ) of chickpea was obtained in Manual Weed Control (hoeing), which was not statistically different from Penthalene-plus (2225 kg ha -1 ) applied at 2.5 L ha -1 . The highest and lowest grain yields were respectively 486 and 455 kg ha -1 more than that in Weedy check (1770 kg ha -1 ). Chickpea yield following Penthalene-plus at 2.5 L ha -1 sand mix broadcast application was 284 kg ha -1 more than the Weedy check. Penthalene-plus spray at 2.5 L ha -1 is the best alternative to Manual Weed Control for Controlling wild onion and for increasing chickpea grain yield.

    Abstract:

    A field experiment was conducted to assess the growth and yield response of autumn planted maize and its Weeds to application of a new post-emergence herbicide Equip (foramsulfuron + isoxadifen-ethyl) alone and in combination with urea. The experiment comprised Weedy check, Manual Weed Control, foramsulfuron + isoxadifen-ethyl @ 1125 g a.i. ha -1 alone, foramsulfuron + isoxadifen-ethyl @ 1125, 1012 and 900 g a.i. ha -1 with 3% urea solution. Result revealed that application of full dose of herbicide in combination with urea gives better result than the use of full dose of herbicide alone. Weeds density and total Weed dry weight 20, 40 days after spraying (DAS) and at harvest decreased significantly when foramusulfuron + isoxadifen-ethyl along with urea as adjuvant at 1125 g a.i. ha -1 was applied compared to application of herbicide alone at 1125 g a.i. ha - 1 . Full dose of herbicide foramsulfuron + isoxadifen-ethyl at 1125 g a.i. ha -1 alone showed statistically similar results as reducing dose of herbicide foramsulfuron + isoxadifen-ethyl at 1012 g a.i. ha -1 + 3% urea in reducing Weeds density, dry weight and increasing yield of maize. The study revealed that the herbicide dose can be reduced up to 10-12% if urea solution was used as adjuvant to obtain the same efficiency as with full dose without compromising on maize yield.

    ABSTRACT: Low fertilizer use efficiency due to inappropriate Weed Control practices is one of the main causes of poor wheat yield worldwide. A 2 year field experiment was conducted to study the effects of three fertilizer levels and four Weed Control practices on fertilizer use efficiency and nutrient uptake by wheat and its associated Weeds. Fertilizer levels were F0 (zero fertilizer), F1 (75 kg ha-1 N + 50 kg ha-1 P2O5), and F2 (150 kg ha-1 N + 100 kg ha-1 P2O5) and Weed Control included W1 (Weedy check), W2 (pendimethalin applied at 1,031 g a.i. ha-1), W3 (isoproturon + carfentrazone ethyl applied at 750 g a.i. ha-1) and W4 (Manual Weed Control). Different Weed Control practices significantly reduced the NPK uptake by Weeds and increased NPK uptake by wheat. Maximum uptake of NPK by wheat and minimum uptake by Weeds were recorded in W4. Increasing dose of fertilizer increased NPK uptake by both Weeds and wheat. However maximum fertilizer use efficiency and grain yield of wheat were achieved when highest dose of fertilizers (F2) was used along with Manual Weed Control method (W4), which was followed by F2 and W3 during both years. We have come to the conclusion that to achieve higher wheat yield by increasing fertilizer doses, farmers should take appropriate Weed Control measures.

  • PERCEPTION OF FARMERS REGARDING EFFECT OF VARIOUS Weed MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN ONION CROP

    Abstract:

    This present study was conducted in 2011 to examine the perception of farmers regarding the effect of various Weed management practices in onion crop in five districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Province of Pakistan. The five districts included Swabi, Mardan, Charsadda, Malakand and Swat. Data were collected by survey method from 200 respondents, randomly selected 40 farmers from each district. Information were collected from farmers regarding Weedy check (Control), Manual Weed Control and chemical Weed Control which included herbicides (Dual Gold S-metolachlor using @ 2 L ha -1 , Pendimethalin 33% @ 2 L ha -1 and Buctril super @ 1.5 L ha -1 ). Main Weeds in onion crop were Convolvulus arvensis, Euphorbia helioscopia, Coronopus didymus, Avena fatua, Rumex dentatus, Melilotus indica, Medicago denticulata and Chenopodium murale. Data analysis showed that the different Weed management practices in onion significantly increased bulb yield of the crop as compared to Weedy check. However, farmers perceived that pendimethalin @ 2 L ha -1 was the best herbicide as compared to the other Weed management practices used by farmers of the area. The onion bulb yield was highest in the Manual Weed Control followed by pendimethalin @ 2 L ha -1 . The study recommends that both Manual Weeding and pendimethalin may be used for a desirable Weed Control in onion and for achieving higher onion bulb yield.

    Abstract:

    A field trial was conducted to study the effect of chemical and Manual Weed Control on yield and yield components of maize, and to study the effect of these Weed Control measures on the Weeds infesting maize crop during the year 2011. The trial was having six treatments (Weedy check, hoeing, Dual gold (s- metolachlor @ 600 mL ac -1 ), Heera (propisochlor 40% SE @ 600 mL ac -1 ), Portico (nicosulfuron 75% WG @ 30 g ac -1 ) and Atrazine 38% SC @ 400 mL ac -1 . Major Weeds infesting the maize crop during the trial were Cynodon dactylon, Cyperus rotundus, Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Trianthema portulacastrum and Achyranthus aspera. Results showed that plant height, number of cobs plant -1 , number of grains cob -1 , cob length, 1000 grain weight, biological yield and grain yield of maize were all significantly affected by the applied Weed Control measures. The Weeds m -2 and Weed biomass were also significantly affected by the application of herbicides. Hoeing resulted in 85.5% Weed Control and ranked first followed by Dual gold as the most effective herbicide and ranked second among the treatments with 72.35% Weed Control over Weedy check. Dual gold @ 600 ml ac -1 also produced maximum net return of Rs. 60326 ha -1 for the crop.

  • PERCEPTION OF FARMING COMMUNITY REGARGDING EFFECT OF VARIOUS Weed Control PRACTICES ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF WHEAT

    Abstract:

    The study was conducted in 2011 in order to check perception of farming community regarding effect of various Weed Control practices on yield and yield components of wheat crop in the six union councils of district Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The six union councils included Anbar, Lahore, Manki, Tordher, Jalbai and Jehangira. Data were collected by a survey method from 120 respondents, having randomly selected 20 farmers from each of the union councils. The information was gathered from farmers regarding Manual Weed Control and use of herbicides included Puma Super (fenoxaprop-P-ethyl) using @ 500 ml acre -1 , clodinafoppropargyl 15%WP @ 140 g acre -1 , Buctril super (bromoxnil-octanovate + heptanovate ester) @ 300 ml acre -1 , Affinity 50WP (carfentrazone ethyle + isoproturon) @ 700 g acre -1 , and Eagle (bromoxynil + MCPA) @ 500 m acre -1 . Common Weeds in wheat crop were Phalaris minor, Convolvulus arvensis, Euphorbia helioscopia, Malva parviflora, Cyperus rotundus, Coronopus didymus, Avena fatua, Rumex dentatus, Melilotus indica, Medicago denticulata, and Chenopodium album. Analysis of the data showed that Weeds were Controlled Manually and through application of herbicides. However, overwhelming majority (91.67%) of the farming community perceived that Weeds in wheat crop were most effectively Controlled by Manual Weeding followed by application of herbicides named Puma super (fenoxaprop-P-ethyl) @ 500 ml acre -1 as perceived by 85% of the respondents. The study concludes that all parameters including density of Weeds per square meter, average plant height (cm), tillers per square meter, grains per spike and grain yield (kg/ha) were significantly affected by Manual Weeding and application of herbicides, especially by Puma super (fenoxaprop-P-ethyl) 6.57% using @ 500 ml acre -1 . The study recommends that Manual Weeding or use of Puma super (fenoxaprop-P-ethyl) @ 500 ml acre -1 may be used for effective Control of Weeds and thus get higher yields

    Abstract:

    The paper focuses on the study conducted in 2010 to analyze effectiveness of Farmers Field Schools (FFS) in communicating new skills and knowledge to farmers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. For this purpose, seven districts from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan including Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Kohat and Hangu were selected. Data regarding effectiveness of FFS were obtained from 280 randomly selected farmers through “survey” method and were analyzed using descriptive statistics i.e. means and standard deviations. However, researchers also applied a paired t-test to determine the difference between the pre and post FFS scenarios in the study area. The results show that during the training in crop production technology, the timely and balanced use of fertilizers was ranked 1 st with mean values 3.38 and 3.87 closely followed by High yielding varieties and Soil analysis which were ranked 2 nd and 3 rd by the farmer respondents with mean values of 3.36, 3.89 and 3.35 and 3.94 in the pre- and post-FFS scenarios, respectively. Similarly, during the training in crop protection technology, identification of pest and predator was ranked 1 st with mean values of 3.34 and 3.94, Seed treatment with fungicides was ranked 2 nd with mean values 3.33, 3.74 and Insect pests Control by local recipes was ranked 3 rd with mean values of 3.29 and 3.96 in pre- and post-FFS scenarios, respectively. Likewise, Manual Weed Control was ranked 1 st with mean values of 3.41 and 3.94 followed by chemical Weed Control and cultural Weed Control which were ranked 2 nd and 3 rd with mean values of 3.33, 3.74 and 3.31 and 3.73 in the pre- and post-FFS scenarios, respectively. In the same way, furrow irrigation technique was ranked 1 st with mean values of 3.44 and 3.88 followed by Boarder and cultural Drip irrigation techniques which were ranked 2 nd and 3 rd with mean values of 3.42, 3.89 and 3.39 and 3.86 in the pre- and post-FFS scenarios, respectively. This situation shows a highly significant difference between the pre and post FFS scenarios which mean that sufficient improvement was made in the skill and knowledge of farmers regarding various farming practices in the study area.

  • Production and productivity of maize subjected to modern and traditional methods of Weed Control options in Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria

    This study was designed to evaluate the implications of using alternative Weed Control options on viability, production and productivity of maize crop in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigeria. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from 451 randomly selected smallholder farmers. Gross margins, regression and correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. About 72% of farmers who grew maize practiced Manual Weed Control while 40% used integrated modern and Manual Weed Control. Results revealed that viability was higher in maize subjected to integrated (119,664.38 naira/ha) than in Manual (4211.63 naira/ha) Weed Control. Seed rate (β = 0.155), variety (β = 0.283), herbicides (β = 0.593), fertilizer (β = 0.100) and labour (β = 0.535) were positive and significant determinants of maize output with a coefficient of determination of 0.823. Productivity of seed, labour, and fertilizer were higher under integrated Weed Control option than Manual Weed Control. There was a positive association between use of herbicides and resource productivity (seed quantity (r = 0.607), herbicides (r = 0.526), fertilizer (r = 0.347) and labour (r = 0.770). Farmers were therefore encouraged adopt herbicides to improve viability, production and resource productivity. There was need for further research to identify intervention areas for inducing adoption of herbicides by farmers.
