    Abstract:

    An inventory of Medicinal Species diversity in the flora of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been made for 15 angiosperm families, viz., Boraginaceae, Convolvulaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Fabaceae, Molluginaceae, Papavaraceae, Portulacaceae, Ranunculaceae, Rhamnaceae, Rutaceae, Tamaricaceae, Tiliaceae, Urticaceae, Verbenaceae and Vitaceae, and 61 Species of Medicinal plants are recognized. These families are represented in the flora by a total of 393 Species of which 15.52% are Medicinal. Among the families, the Fabaceae is found to be represented by 23 Medicinal Species which is highest and 37.70% of the total Species. Of these 61 Medicinal Species, 72.13% exhibits herbaceous life form while remaining 13.11% and 14.75% exhibit shrubs and trees respectively. An enumeration of these Medicinal Species is presented, each with current nomenclature, Arabic name, English name, Medicinal uses, pharmacological properties and status of occurrence in the flora. The communication is aimed at emphasizing the planning and implementation of national conservation strategies for sustainable management of the Medicinal plants of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.     A preliminary survey on the Medicinal plant diversity in the flora of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been made with seven families: Amaranthaceae, Apocynaceae, Capparidaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Labiatae, Polygonaceae and Solanaceae, as an initial study. These families are represented in the flora with 254 Species (i.e. 12% of the total Species), and individually with 21, 7, 29, 66, 76, 22 and 33 Species, respectively. Of these, 86 Species, so far investigated, are Medicinal, distributed in these seven families as follows: 7, 5, 12, 20, 23, 7 and 12, respectively. The Labiatae have the highest number (23) of Medicinal plants among them while maximum Medicinal plant diversity within the family has been observed with the Apocynaceae. An enumeration of these 86 Medicinal Species is presented with the current nomenclature, Arabic names and Medicinal uses. This communication aims at emphasizing the importance of setting up conservation priorities, and sustained development of various Medicinal plants of Saudi Arabia.

    Abstract:

    The genus Warburgia (Canellaceae) contains four tree Species that are of valuable Medicinal importance and are all found in Africa. Genetic diversity present in wild populations of these Species is under great threat due to unsustainable harvesting for medicines and indiscrimi- nate felling for timber and agricultural expansion. There is therefore an urgent need for conservation of these Species. Some authors disagree about the taxonomy of the genus and list different Species as synonyms. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique was used to determine the genetic relationships between three Species to resolve the taxonomic confusion. The amount of genetic variation within and among populations was assessed to guide strategies for their conservation and sustainable utilization. Four AFLP primer pairs (EcoRI/MseI) generated a total of 185 amplification products. Analysis of molecular variance revealed most variation among individuals within populations (63%, P<0.0001), but variation among pop- ulations (37%, P<0.0001) was highly significant as well. Constrained analysis of principal coordinates based on the Jaccard distance confirmed the separation among popula- tions (38.2%, P<0.0001). A phenetic tree and ordination graphs showed a clear distinction of W. ugandensis from W. salutaris and W. stuhlmannii. W. ugandensis populations from Uganda and western Kenya formed a subgroup that clustered away from the rest of the W. ugandensis populations. W. salutaris and W. stuhlmannii populations showed little genetic differentiation. An implication of the data to genetic management and taxonomic clarification is discussed.

  • In vitro propagation and iridoid analysis of the Medicinal Species Harpagophytum procumbens and H. zeyheri

    Extracts of the tubers of Harpagophytum procumbens DC (Devil's Claw) are used widely for the relief of arthritis, lumbago and muscular pain. The anti-inflammatory activity has been attributed to their iridoid components. A two-step protocol was established for the in vitro propagation of plants of Harpagophytum sp. by the regeneration of new plantlets from nodal cuttings and their acclimatisation to ex vitro conditions. Single node cuttings were submitted to a root induction treatment with β-indoleacetic acid (5 days at 2 mg l–1) followed by a transfer to a phytohormone-free medium to promote root elongation and support plantlet development. The new plantlets were weaned under autotrophic conditions and subsequently acclimatised in a glasshouse where they grew into fertile flowering plants that produced the characteristic Devil's Claw fruits as well as tuberised roots. Analysis of the tuber tissue of the micropropagated plants showed the presence of the iridoids harpagoside and harpagide at concentrations comparable with those found in the wild plant material (1% dry weight). The leaves were also found to contain these iridoids, and therefore could potentially provide an alternative and more sustainable source of therapeutically active compounds. The application of in vitro methods for the propagation of Devil's Claw would contribute to the conservation of this Species.

  • Evaluation of the diuretic activity in two Mexican Medicinal Species: Selaginella nothohybrida and Selaginella lepidophylla and its effects with ciclooxigenases inhibitors

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Doradilla is a plant that has a long history in the Mexican traditional system of medicine for gall and renal stones, diuresis, stomach and liver inflammation among other diseases. Major components isolated from these plants include biflavonoids as amentoflavone (1), robustaflavone (2) and (S)-2,3-dihydrorobustaflavone (3) and the carbohydrate trehalose (4). The aim of this study was to evaluate the diuretic effect of the decoction of Selaginella nothohybrida Valdespino and Selaginella lepidophylla (Hook & Grev) Spring (Selaginellaceae), and compounds 1–4. We also explored the probable mode of action comparing the effects when using nonspecific and specific COX׳s inhibitors. Materials and methods Three biflavonoids (1–3) were isolated from the ethyl acetate extraction of the aqueous decoction and the carbohydrate trehalose (4) from the aqueous phase. The structures of all compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and comparisons were made against published data. The diuretic activity was assessed in mice by oral administration of the decoctions in doses of 1000 and 2000 mg/kg and biflavonoids 1–3 and trehalose (4) in a dose range of 10 mg/kg using furosemide as a standard drug. Inhibitors of COX׳s such as acetyl salicylic acid, sodium naproxen, indomethacin and Celebrex were also assayed to analyze the involvement of renal prostaglandins in diuresis. Water excretion rate, pH, density, conductivity, and contents of Na+ and K+ were measured in the urine of mice. Results Decoction of Selaginella lepidophylla showed lower effect in the urine output at doses of 1000 and 2000 mg/kg, while decoction of Selaginella nothohybrida produced an increase at 2000 mg/kg (P Conclusions Selaginella nothohybrida presents a moderate diuretic effect, which appears to be in partly mediated by the presence of biflavonoids and trehalose. Renal prostaglandins may be involved in the mechanism of diuresis. The present results provide a quantitative basis explaining the traditional folk medicine use of Selaginella nothohybrida as a diuretic agent by Mexican population.
