    Abstract:

    The lion’s paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus supports an important fishery in Northwestern Mexico and represents a target species for aquaculture practices. The reproductive strategy of the species to fuel gametogenesis in a culturing system in Bahia Tortugas (Baja California Sur, Mexico) was investigated during an annual cycle. We used histological and histochemical techniques, as well as a gonadosomatic index and morpho-physiological indices for the digestive gland, adductor muscle and mantle tissue. The response of the species was compared with data previously reported at other localities. Frequencies of gonad developmental stages, oocyte diameter, and lipid index of oocytes indicates that gametogenesis was continuous throughout the year in Bahia Tortugas, with two spawning peaks in July–August 2009 (minor) and December through February (major). Bahia Tortugas is a eutrophic area offering high primary productivity all year round; under these conditions, gametogenesis appears to be regulated by the energy taken from food following an opportunistic strategy. However, the digestive gland index decreased and the mantle tissue and muscle indices increased during the period of maximum gamete growth, suggesting that the species also uses some of its stored reserves to partially fuel gametogenesis (conservative strategy). High incidence of reabsorbing gonads (atresia) likely occurred because of atypical daily variations in water temperature from May through September (12 °C to 38 °C), or stressful conditions in the culturing system in summer. Despite this, the culturing system set in Bahia Tortugas appears beneficial for a prolonged reproduction of N. subnodosus

    The reproductive strategy of lion's paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus was evaluated in a culturing system in Bahia Tortugas, Baja California Sur, Mexico during an annual cycle, comparing its response with data previously reported at other localities. High frequencies of ripe gonads throughout the year indicate that reproduction was continuous, with two main ripening/spawning events: July-September and December- March. A continuous breeding is also reported for the species in Bahia Magdalena, Bahia Juncalito, and Bahia de Los Angeles. These eutrophic areas are Biological Active Centers where gametogenesis appears to be regulated by the energy taken from recently ingested food following an opportunistic strategy. However, the digestive gland index decreased and the muscle indices increased during one of the breeding peaks, suggesting that some stored reserves are also used to sustain gametogenesis (conservative strategy) partially. High incidences of atretic oocytes are likely associated with atypical daily variations in water temperature from May through September (12 to 33°C), or with stressful conditions in the culturing system in summer. Despite this, the culturing system set in Bahia Tortugas appears beneficial for a continuous reproduction of N. subnodosus.

    Abstract We studied the nutritional value of mono, binary, and ternary algal diets for the juvenile lions-paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus reared at four temperatures: 16, 20, 24, and 28 °C. Live diets included one monoalgal (Isochrysis galbana), three binary (I. galbana + Pavlova salina, I. galbana + Chaetoceros muelleri, and P. salina + C. muelleri) and one ternary (I. galbana + P. salina + C. muelleri) mixtures of microalgae. Scallop responses were measured as survival, growth in shell height and wet and dry weight, and respiratory rate. Scallops grew significantly larger (6.81 mm; 39.75 g) and faster (0.13 mm d− 1; 1.11 g d− 1) and had higher respiratory rates (1326 mg O2 min− 1 mg− 1 dry weight of meat) when fed P. salina + C. muelleri and kept at 28 °C and 24 °C. In contrast, scallops grew significantly less (2.72 mm; 5.54 g) and slower (0.01 mm d− 1; 0.05 g d− 1), and had a lower respiratory rate (670 mg O2 min− 1 mg− 1 dry weight of meat) with a diet exclusively of I. galbana at 16 °C. Growth rates were significantly related to nutritional indices that include protein content. These results indicate the importance of this nutrient in juvenile growth, which is useful for optimizing culturing programs for this commercially important bivalve.

    Abstract Relaxation and excision of mantle tissue from live lions-paw scallops can assist in the optimum development of pre-operative techniques for pearl production in this species. To determine the feasibility of relaxing the scallop, five scallops were exposed to each of nine relaxant treatments previously used for pearl seeding operations. Relaxation and suitable conditions for seeding operations were obtained in scallops exposed to 30 g L − 1 magnesium chloride and to 1 mL L − 1 2-phenoxyethanol. To determine the healing capacity and ability to sustain tissue excision, a section of mantle tissue was removed from 15 relaxed scallops. Survival 30 days after excision was 87% and all scallops showed signs of regeneration. Microscopic examination confirmed the elongation of the mantle epithelia and growth of new connective tissue. This relaxation technique is an important step in developing basic technology for pearl production, as previously accomplished with other species. This is an important tool that will improve successful production of lions-paw scallop cultured pearls. This can add significant value to the scallop-cultivating industry and the pearl industry.

    La acuicultura de la almeja mano de leon Nodipecten subnodosus requiere de una oferta confiable de jovenes para su desarrollo. A pesar de que existen grandes poblaciones de esta especie en la Laguna Ojo de Liebre, Baja California Sur, Mexico, los intentos de captacion de semilla en costales cebolleros durante la temporada reproductiva (septiembre a noviembre) no han sido exitosos. En el presente estudio se evaluo el reclutamiento de jovenes de N. subnodosus en tres sitios (La Ventana, El Conchalito y El Borbollon) dentro de la laguna, donde previamente se habia registrado un mayor reclutamiento. Se emplearon colectores de malla Netlon en vez de costales cebolleros, los cuales se instalaron a 1 m de profundidad en los sitios de captacion en dos ocasiones (octubre y noviembre de 2007) cuando las larvas pediveliger eran mas abundantes. Los colectores se retiraron y evaluaron en febrero de 2008, despues de estar sumergidos durante 118 o 82 dias. Se observaron larvas pediveliger desde finales de septiembre hasta finales de noviembre en los tres sitios de recoleccion. Las maximas densidades fueron obtenidas a 1 m de profundidad a mediados de noviembre y estas fueron significativamente mayores en La Ventana, con un total de 12,400 larvas m-3. Los colectores instalados en octubre en El Conchalito mostraron un reclutamiento medio significativamente mayor (P <0.05, 1.7 ± 0.2 semillas por colector) que los colectores instalados en noviembre (0.4 ± 0.3 semillas por colector). Los colectores instalados en octubre y noviembre en La Ventana tuvieron un reclutamiento medio de 0.6 ± 0.3 y 0.9 ± 0.2 semillas por colector, respectivamente. No se observaron diferencias significativas en las tasas de crecimiento de los jovenes recolectados. Las altas densidades de larvas pediveliger observadas en el mes de noviembre indican que la actividad reproductiva se presenta a finales de octubre o principios de noviembre. Con base en la abundancia de larvas pediveliger, La Ventana presento el mayor potencial para la captacion de semillas, seguida por El Borbollon y El Conchalito; sin embargo, El Conchalito mostro el mayor reclutamiento de jovenes, seguido por La Ventana y El Borbollon. Debido a que la captacion de semillas fue relativamente baja en los tres sitios, se requieren mas esfuerzos para determinar sitios y tecnicas de captacion optimos, asi como tiempos apropiados de inmersion de colectores.

    El presente trabajo de investigacion determino el efecto de la temperatura estable y oscilante del agua de mar a tres diferentes niveles (21, 24 y 28°C), sobre la condicion fisiologica de la almeja mano de leon Nodipecten subnodosus. Para ello, se evaluaron los siguientes indicadores fisiologicos: contenido de adenosina trifosfato (ATP), glucogeno y carbohidratos totales, asi como indice de rendimiento muscular (IRM) y carga energetica adenilada (CEA), los cuales se determinaron en el musculo abductor de organismos extraidos directamente de la laguna y despues de la aplicacion de los tratamientos. Se encontro que, en el experimento, las concentraciones de ATP, contenido de glucogeno, carbohidratos totales, e IRM disminuyeron significantemente (P<0.05) despues de la aplicacion de los tratamientos. No se encontro un efecto del nivel de temperatura y la forma de aplicacion (oscilante y constante) en el IRM y CEA, sin embargo, en el contenido de glucogeno se obtuvo un afecto significativo solo del nivel de temperatura, siendo los organismos sometidos a 28°C diferentes (P<0.05) a los de 24 y 21°C. Por lo tanto, se concluyo, que solo el nivel de temperatura de aclimatacion afecto la condicion fisiologica de la almeja mano de leon, siendo los organismos aclimatados a 28°C los mas afectados. ABSTRACT The present research work determined the effect of the stable and oscillating seawater temperature at three different levels (21, 24 and 28°C), on the physiological condition of the lion’s paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus. For this, we evaluated the following physiological indicators: adenosine triphosphate content (ATP), glycogen and total carbohydrates, as well as muscle yield index (MYI) and adenylated energy charge, which were determined in the abductor muscle of organisms, extracted directly from the lagoon and after the treatments application. It was found that in the experiment, concentrations of ATP, glycogen content, total carbohydrates, and MYI decreased significantly (P<0.05) after the application of treatments. No effect of temperature level and application form (oscillating and constant) on MYI and CEA was found, however, glycogen content showed a significant affect only from the temperature level, being organisms exposed to 28°C statistically different from those of 24 and 21°C. In conclusion, only the acclimatization temperature level affected the physiological condition of the lion’s paw scallop, being the organisms acclimatized to 28°C the most affected.

    En presente estudio se aplico un tratamiento de inmersion en acido citrico a callo de almeja, con el objetivo de reducir el tiempo de secado de la almeja mano de leon. Las muestras se sometieron a inmersion en acido citrico 0.1 M, durante cero (control), una y tres h. Se evaluo el efecto del pre-tratamiento de inmersion en solucion acida y la temperatura de secado (50, 60 y 70 °C), sobre la aw y el fenomeno de sorcion en el callo seco. Ambas variables mostraron un efecto significativo (P<0.05) sobre la aw. El fenomeno de sorcion fue muy similar en cada una de las temperaturas de secado, asi como para el pre-tratamiento de inmersion acida. El comportamiento de sorcion fue bien explicado por medio de la ecuacion BET, encontrando valores de monocapa de 0.04 a 0.05 g de humedad (g de agua/g de materia seca).

    Abstract The effect of season and storage at three temperatures (0, 5 and 10 °C) was evaluated on the main metabolites and parameters related to rigor mortis . Adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP), lactic acid, octopine, pH and sarcomere length in the adductor muscle of lion's paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus were determined. Seasonality influenced the initial values of ATP, octopine and pH, however, no effect was noticed during storage, since a similar effect for the three temperatures evaluated in the four seasons was observed. A lower ATP concentration was found during storage at 0 °C than that found in muscle stored at 5 and 10 °C. According to the analyses of lactic acid, octopine and pH, the muscle acidification during rigor mortis was independent of lactic acid production. The greater sarcomere lengths for all seasons were in agreement with the highest ATP concentrations, corresponding to the samples stored at 5 and 10 °C. Therefore, according to the level of myofibrillar contraction, rigor mortis was lower at 5 and 10 °C storage in the four seasons. Hence, it is concluded that the seasonality did not show a significant impact on metabolite and parameter values related to rigor mortis during storage, and that 5 °C is the best storage temperature for the adductor muscles during the initial stage of rigor mortis and then reduce it to 0 °C, if it is focused to the fresh market.

    In this study was applied an acid pre-treatment to scallop with the aim of reducing drying times of Pacific Lion’s Paw Scallop meats. The samples were immersed in 0.1M citric acid for zero (control), one, and three hours. Pretreatment in acid solution and drying temperature (50, 60 and 70 oC) were evaluated on the a w and the sorption phenomenon in dried scallop. Both, acid pre-treatment and drying temperature, showed a significant effect (P<0.05) on the a w . The sorption phenomenon was similar for every drying temperature as well as for the pre-treatment. Sorption behaviour was well explained by means of the BET equation, founding values for monolayer from 0.04 to 0.05g of moisture (water/g of dry matter).

    SUMMARY The effect of refrigerated transport during 48h and four days storage on the quality and shelf life of the adductor muscle of whole lion’s paw scallops (Nodipecten subnodosus) was evaluated. Proximal composition, ATP and related products, K-value, total volatile bases (TVB-N) and trimethylamine (TMA-N), pH, and microbiological analyses were quantified. The muscle was found to be lean and high in protein. Levels of muscular ATP were initially low and the K-value increased lineally, but according to this parameter the product was considered edible until the end of the storage period. With respect to TVB-N and TMA-N, the allowed limits were not exceeded. The pH level showed no significant variations during storage. According to TVB-N, TMAN values and microbiological analyses performed, adductor muscle proved to be innocuous after four days under the conditions of transportation and storage utilized.

    Abstract The toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum produces paralyzing shellfish poisons (PSPs) that are consumed and accumulated by bivalves. Previously, we recorded a decrease in hemocytes 24 h after injection of PSPs (gonyautoxin 2/3 epimers, GTX2/3) in the adductor muscle in the lions-paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus . In this work, qualitative and quantitative analyses, in in vivo and in vitro experiments, revealed that the lower count of hemocytes results from cells undergoing typical apoptosis when exposed to GTX 2/3 epimers. This includes visible morphological alterations of the cytoplasmic membrane, damage to the nuclear membrane, condensation of chromatin, DNA fragmentation, and release of DNA fragments into the cytoplasm. Induction of apoptosis was accompanied by phosphatidylserine exposure to the outer cell membrane and activation of cysteine-aspartic proteases, caspase 3 and caspase 8. Addition of an inhibitor of caspase to the medium suppressed activation in hemocytes exposed to the toxins, suggesting that cell death was induced by a caspase-dependent apoptotic pathway. The results are important for future investigation of the scallop's immune system and should provide new insights into apoptotic processes in immune cells of scallops exposed to PSPs.

    Abstract Hemocytes play an important role in internal defense in mollusk bivalves; they are generally divided into granular and hyaline types, where the granules possess molecules to combat foreign particles. We investigated the morphology, staining reactions, and immune-related activities of hemocytes from the pectinid lions-paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus . We showed that, in contrast to the conditions in most bivalves and similar to other pectinids, no granular cells were observed; only very few semi-granular cells were present and the large majority of cells were hyalinocytes and blast-like cells. The cytoplasm in many hyalinocytes showed vesicles of various sizes, but none with the staining characteristics of typical granules. When hemolymph was removed from these scallops, the plasma did not clot and the hemocytes rapidly adhered to one another in suspension. When living hemocytes were placed on a glass surface, they clustered into groups of various sizes; within minutes, pseudopods extended from the cells and outward migration began. Many cells spread to form extensive networks of flat cells, and other undifferentiated cells did not spread and kept a rounded morphology. Some hemocytes were immunologically active because they phagocytize Escherichia coli bacteria. Hemocytes expressed the carbohydrates residues N-acetyl- d -glucosamine, α- d -glucose, α- d -mannose, and α-L-fucose moieties, and cytochemical assays showed activity of acid phosphatase, specific esterase, and non-specific esterase, enzymes commonly associated with lysosomes and immunologic activity. These observations serve as a useful tool for further investigation of morphofunctional studies and physiological status of scallops.

  • Effects of induced paralysis on hemocytes and tissues of the giant lions-paw scallop by paralyzing shellfish poison

    In general, bivalves are not affected by exposure to toxic dinoflagellates that produce paralyzing shellfish poisons (PSP). After injection with PSP extracted from the Gymnodinium catenatum, Nodipecten subnodosus is paralyzed, indicating that PSP provokes effects similar to what is observed in vertebrates, including paralysis and metabolic stress. To investigate the processes involved in poisoning by PSP, lions-paw scallops were injected with gonyautoxin (GTX) 2/3 epimers in the adductor muscle. Mild doses provoked adductor muscle contractions and paralysis, mantle retraction, and incapacity of shell closure, but scallops gradually recovered in a clear, dose-time recovery pattern. With high doses of GTX 2/3, scallops were permanently paralyzed, and hemocytes in hemolymph were reduced. Surprisingly, under these conditions, scallops continued normal feeding and did not show any microscopic defect in intestine or gills, but hemocytes infiltrated the adductor muscle and abnormal vitellogenesis and mantle melanization occurred. Paralysis stress was accompanied by negative scallop responses, based on visible effects, generation of nitric oxide, lipid peroxidation, and changes in antioxidant and hydrolytic enzymes in hemocytes and tissues. These data can be used to understand potential side effects of PSP in bivalves.

    Effect of probiotic bacteria on survival and growth of Cortez oyster larvae, Crassostrea cor- teziensis (Bivalvia: Ostreidae). Disease control problems have major constraints in aquaculture production, and the use of probiotics in larviculture is a valid alternative to antibiotics. This study analyzed the effect of probi- otic bacteria on survival and final size of Cortez oyster larvae Crassostrea corteziensis. Two different probiotic concentrations were evaluated, 1x10 4 and 1x10 5 CFU/ml of Lactic acid bacteria (strain NS61) isolated from Nodipecten subnodosus, and bacilli isolated from the white leg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, strain YC58) and C. corteziensis (Burkholderia cepacia, strain Y021). Bacteria were added directly into culture tanks, starting the bioassays from veliger to pediveliger stages as follows: (1) Control, without probiotics; (2) lactic acid bacteria (Lb); (3) bacilli mix (Mb) in a proportion 1:1. Results showed a higher larval survival with Lb and Mb at a dose of 1x10 4 CFU/ml compared to the control group. Larvae exposed to Mb at 1x10 5 CFU/ml showed higher survival than Lb and control. Larval final size was not significantly increased with the tested probiotics, but larvae treated with Lb at 1x10 5 CFU/ml showed less survival rate than those treated at 1x10 4 CFU/ml. This study showed the beneficial effect of these probiotics, added individually or mixed in C.

    Juvenile seed of the Cortes oyster Crassostrea corteziensis were exposed to Lactobacillus sp. isolated from Nodipecten subnodosus, a mix of Pseudomonas sp. and Burkholderia cepacia, a marine yeast strain, a commercial probiotic (Epicin®), and oxytetracycline to determine their effect on growth, survival, SOD activity, and protein content. Probiotics at the test dose of 50,000 cells •ml-1, Epicin and oxytetracycline at 7 mg •l -1 were evaluated during 30 days of culture. Results showed that growth of C. corteziensis was significantly improved by Lactobacillus sp. and the bacilli mix significantly enhanced survival and SOD activity at the test dose. Protein content did not significantly increase by the treatments used. This study demonstrated the potential use of marine microbiota to improve cultivation of C. corteziensis.

    Abstract:

    El presente trabajo de investigacion determino el efecto de la temperatura estable y oscilante del agua de mar a tres diferentes niveles (21, 24 y 28°C), sobre la condicion fisiologica de la almeja mano de leon Nodipecten subnodosus. Para ello, se evaluaron los siguientes indicadores fisiologicos: contenido de adenosina trifosfato (ATP), glucogeno y carbohidratos totales, asi como indice de rendimiento muscular (IRM) y carga energetica adenilada (CEA), los cuales se determinaron en el musculo abductor de organismos extraidos directamente de la laguna y despues de la aplicacion de los tratamientos. Se encontro que, en el experimento, las concentraciones de ATP, contenido de glucogeno, carbohidratos totales, e IRM disminuyeron significantemente (P<0.05) despues de la aplicacion de los tratamientos. No se encontro un efecto del nivel de temperatura y la forma de aplicacion (oscilante y constante) en el IRM y CEA, sin embargo, en el contenido de glucogeno se obtuvo un afecto significativo solo del nivel de temperatura, siendo los organismos sometidos a 28°C diferentes (P<0.05) a los de 24 y 21°C. Por lo tanto, se concluyo, que solo el nivel de temperatura de aclimatacion afecto la condicion fisiologica de la almeja mano de leon, siendo los organismos aclimatados a 28°C los mas afectados. ABSTRACT The present research work determined the effect of the stable and oscillating seawater temperature at three different levels (21, 24 and 28°C), on the physiological condition of the lion’s paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus. For this, we evaluated the following physiological indicators: adenosine triphosphate content (ATP), glycogen and total carbohydrates, as well as muscle yield index (MYI) and adenylated energy charge, which were determined in the abductor muscle of organisms, extracted directly from the lagoon and after the treatments application. It was found that in the experiment, concentrations of ATP, glycogen content, total carbohydrates, and MYI decreased significantly (P<0.05) after the application of treatments. No effect of temperature level and application form (oscillating and constant) on MYI and CEA was found, however, glycogen content showed a significant affect only from the temperature level, being organisms exposed to 28°C statistically different from those of 24 and 21°C. In conclusion, only the acclimatization temperature level affected the physiological condition of the lion’s paw scallop, being the organisms acclimatized to 28°C the most affected.

    En presente estudio se aplico un tratamiento de inmersion en acido citrico a callo de almeja, con el objetivo de reducir el tiempo de secado de la almeja mano de leon. Las muestras se sometieron a inmersion en acido citrico 0.1 M, durante cero (control), una y tres h. Se evaluo el efecto del pre-tratamiento de inmersion en solucion acida y la temperatura de secado (50, 60 y 70 °C), sobre la aw y el fenomeno de sorcion en el callo seco. Ambas variables mostraron un efecto significativo (P<0.05) sobre la aw. El fenomeno de sorcion fue muy similar en cada una de las temperaturas de secado, asi como para el pre-tratamiento de inmersion acida. El comportamiento de sorcion fue bien explicado por medio de la ecuacion BET, encontrando valores de monocapa de 0.04 a 0.05 g de humedad (g de agua/g de materia seca).

    Abstract The effect of season and storage at three temperatures (0, 5 and 10 °C) was evaluated on the main metabolites and parameters related to rigor mortis . Adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP), lactic acid, octopine, pH and sarcomere length in the adductor muscle of lion's paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus were determined. Seasonality influenced the initial values of ATP, octopine and pH, however, no effect was noticed during storage, since a similar effect for the three temperatures evaluated in the four seasons was observed. A lower ATP concentration was found during storage at 0 °C than that found in muscle stored at 5 and 10 °C. According to the analyses of lactic acid, octopine and pH, the muscle acidification during rigor mortis was independent of lactic acid production. The greater sarcomere lengths for all seasons were in agreement with the highest ATP concentrations, corresponding to the samples stored at 5 and 10 °C. Therefore, according to the level of myofibrillar contraction, rigor mortis was lower at 5 and 10 °C storage in the four seasons. Hence, it is concluded that the seasonality did not show a significant impact on metabolite and parameter values related to rigor mortis during storage, and that 5 °C is the best storage temperature for the adductor muscles during the initial stage of rigor mortis and then reduce it to 0 °C, if it is focused to the fresh market.

    In this study was applied an acid pre-treatment to scallop with the aim of reducing drying times of Pacific Lion’s Paw Scallop meats. The samples were immersed in 0.1M citric acid for zero (control), one, and three hours. Pretreatment in acid solution and drying temperature (50, 60 and 70 oC) were evaluated on the a w and the sorption phenomenon in dried scallop. Both, acid pre-treatment and drying temperature, showed a significant effect (P<0.05) on the a w . The sorption phenomenon was similar for every drying temperature as well as for the pre-treatment. Sorption behaviour was well explained by means of the BET equation, founding values for monolayer from 0.04 to 0.05g of moisture (water/g of dry matter).

    SUMMARY The effect of refrigerated transport during 48h and four days storage on the quality and shelf life of the adductor muscle of whole lion’s paw scallops (Nodipecten subnodosus) was evaluated. Proximal composition, ATP and related products, K-value, total volatile bases (TVB-N) and trimethylamine (TMA-N), pH, and microbiological analyses were quantified. The muscle was found to be lean and high in protein. Levels of muscular ATP were initially low and the K-value increased lineally, but according to this parameter the product was considered edible until the end of the storage period. With respect to TVB-N and TMA-N, the allowed limits were not exceeded. The pH level showed no significant variations during storage. According to TVB-N, TMAN values and microbiological analyses performed, adductor muscle proved to be innocuous after four days under the conditions of transportation and storage utilized.

    "La estrategia reproductiva de la almeja mano de leon Nodipecten subnodosus se estudio en un sistema de cultivo en Bahia Tortugas, Baja California Sur, Mexico durante un ciclo anual, comparando su respuesta con datos previamente reportados para otras localidades. La alta frecuencia de gonadas maduras durante todo el ano indica que la reproduccion es continua, con dos eventos principales de madurez/desove: julio-septiembre y diciembre-marzo. Una gametogenesis continua tambien se reporta para esta especie en Bahia Magdalena, Bahia Juncalito y Bahia de Los Angeles. Estas areas eutroficas son Centros de Actividad Biologica, donde la gametogenesis estaria regulada por la energia del alimento recientemente ingerido siguiendo una estrategia oportunista. Sin embargo, el indice de la glandula digestiva disminuyo y el indice del musculo aumento durante uno de los maximos de madurez, indicando un uso parcial de reservas energeticas para sustentar la gametogenesis (estrategia conservadora). La alta incidencia de ovocitos atresicos se atribuye a variaciones diarias atipicas en la temperatura de mayo a septiembre (12 a 38°C) o a condiciones estresantes en el sistema de cultivo en verano. Sin embargo, Bahia Tortugas parece beneficiar una reproduccion continua de N. subnodosus."

    The lion's paw scallop, Nodipecten subnodosus (Sowerby) has considerable aquacultural potential due to its fast growth and large adductor muscle. Prior investigations throughout northwestern Mexico's littoral have reported highly variable growth rates; furthermore, no studies are available of the environment on growth and gametogenesis in this species under culture conditions. This investigation assesses the effect of food availability and temperature on the growth and gametogenesis of N. subnodosus in a suspended culture system at Guerrero Negro lagoon, Mexico. After 1 year of cultivation, N. subnodosus reached 69.13 mm in shell height (SH) (0.196 mm day−1, 14 months old). Two significant growth spurts were observed: over the two first months of culture (August and September 2001, mean growth rate 0.4 mm day−1) and in September 2002 (0.3 mm day−1), both related to high temperatures and chlorophyll a concentrations. The onset of gametogenesis occurred in April 2002, with an increase in temperature (10-month-old scallops, 54.5 mm SH). The first spawning occurred in October and November (86.2 and 93 mm SH), with peak temperatures. These results, together with the analysis of previous reports, indicate that N. subnodosus has a higher preference for temperate areas; therefore, the Guerrero Negro lagoon appears to be a suitable site to culture this species.
